I feel shy to speak in front of Shaykh `Abdu ’s-Salaam. What to do? The problem is he doesn’t speak English, he speaks Turkish.
As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi ta`alaa wa barakaatuh.
Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een. Alhamdulillahi ’Lladhee jama`ana fee hadhihil-jama` al-kareem wa sharafanaa bi anakooni min jama`at sayyideeshaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani wa sharafanaa bi an nakoona min ummati ’n-nabi (s) wal hamdulillahi ’Lladhee an-naaru anamtareeq bi hadiya rasoolillaahi (s) wa ja`alanaa muslimeen muwwahideen mu’mineen wa nashadu an laa ilaaha illa ‘Llah wahdahu laa shareeka lah wa nashadu ana mawlana sayyidinaa Muhammadan `abduhu wa habeebuhu wa rasooluh....
Alhamdulillah that Allah has brought us together in this honored gathering and made us from the ummah of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and has granted us to be monotheists. Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa habeebuhu wa rasooluh.
O Muslims, believers! One plus one equals how much? They say 2 or they say 2 ones, but in reality, according to logic and philosophy 1 + 1 = 1, it cannot be 2. The evidence is the drop. If you have a drop of water, you say this is one drop, and if you bring another drop of water and put them together, what happens? It is one, you cannot say it is two. Two drops of water become one, back to the origin. So everything goes to its origin, there is nothing hanging in the air and anything hanging in the air will be blown away.
So anything that is not related, excuse me for saying this, but I am someone that has to be straightforward. Anything that is not backed by Shari`ah, Tasawwuf that is not backed by Shari`ah, that Tasawwuf is garbage and it doesn’t take you anywhere. Don’t believe those who say there is no Shari`ah, which means they are attacking the message of the Prophet (s) as everything must comply with Shari`ah, even Tasawwuf! Real Tasawwuf doesn’t go beyond the limits of Shari`ah. There are many people today who say, “We don't need Shari`ah, we teach only Tasawwuf.” Who said that, did the Prophet (s) say that? They claim, “We see Prophet (s) every day and receive messages….” They claim to receive messages from the Prophet (s). Did you receive the message that there is only Tasawwuf in Islam and there is no Shari`ah? No, you must have Shari`ah!
What did Imam Malik (r), one of the greatest Imams say? Imam Abu Hanifa (r), one of the greatest Imams, Imam Shafi`i (r), Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (r). What did Imam Abu Hanifa (r), the first of the a'immah after Prophet (s), say? He said, law laa sannataan la halaka nu`man, “If not for two years, I would have been lost.” His entire madhhab which he built over 40 years, at the end, he said it all would have been lost but for two years. He said, “The two years that I spent with Sayyidina Ja`afar as-Saadiq (r),” who is called ‘Dhu'janahayn’ as he has two wings: Shari`ah one wing, Tasawwuf one wing. “If not for the two years I spent with Sayyidina Ja`far as-Saadiq (r),” who is inheriting from Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) and inheriting from Sayyidina `Ali (r), from both of them, as they meet in the silsila a’imma. This tariqah takes from Sayyidina Abu Bakr (r) and Sayyidina `Ali (r); they meet in Sayyidina Ja`far as-Sadiq (r) and then from there it comes all way to Shah Baha`uddin Naqshband (q) and then all the way to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani (q), may Allah give him long life.
I never heard Mawlana say there is no need for Shari`ah. All these books here are Shari`ah books. If there is no need for Shari`ah, for what are we keeping these books, for decoration? Maybe for those who say, “No Shari`ah,” maybe they put those books for decoration. I am not saying to the new converts, no. Build it up slowly, slowly, in-sha-Allah, but don’t drop Shari`ah from your teachings, as some representatives of Mawlana Shaykh are doing. They say it in public and people believe them, because in some places they are trustworthy; so people believe that they are saying correctly, but it is not correct, not even from the senior ones, when they say, “No Shari`ah, we are teaching only Tasawwuf.”
What did Imam Abu Hanifa (r) say? “If not for these two years that I spent with Ja`far as-Saadiq (r), who taught me both Shari`ah and Haqeeqah, Shari`ah and Reality of everything, I would have been lost.”
Imam Malik (r) said, man tasawwafa wa lam yatafaqah faqad tazandaqa, “Who studied Tasawwuf and not Shari`ah is a heretic.” Wa man tasawwafa wa tafaqqaha faqad tahaqqaqa, “And the one who studied both Tasawwuf and Shari`ah, that person has combined the two oceans,” Maraj al-bahrayni yaltaqiyaan. According to Surat ar-Rahman, Allah (swt) made the two oceans to meet:
مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَا نِبَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخ ٌ لاَ يَبْغِيَانِ
Maraja al-bahrayni yaltaqiyaani baynahumaa barzakhun laa yabghiyaan.
He has let loosed the two seas meeting together. Between them is a barrier that none of them can transgress. (Surat ar-Rahman, 55:19-20)
The Ocean of Shari`ah, as they say the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Ocean, or Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean or Pacific Ocean, they meet, Shari`ah and Haqeeqah meet. They are two oceans, one ocean moving and another ocean coming in another way. They connect and their connection becomes a reality. Becomes what? A reality. Like for example, one drop of Shari`ah combined with one drop of Reality, Haqeeqah, will make Light to enter your heart:
قَدْ جَاءكُم مِّنَ اللّهِ نُورٌ وَكِتَابٌ مُّبِينٌ
Qad jaakum min Allaahi noorun wa kitaabun mubeen.
Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a Light (Prophet Muhammad) and a plain Book (this Qur'an). (Surat al-Maa’idah, 5:15)
That Light is Muhammad (s), to guide the ummah, so the guidance of Rasoolullah (s) is the Shari`ah and the Haqeeqah! If you say, “I don’t want Shari`ah,” why are you praying? If you’re teaching is only Tasawwuf as you are claiming, you senior ones, senior mureeds, senior, if you claim that you are only teaching Tasawwuf, why are you praying? Prayers are from Shari`ah. You don’t need, you don’t want to be a hypocrite, to say one thing and do another. So you know that Shari`ah is important for Tasawwuf! Then don’t claim that, “We are only teaching Tasawwuf.” No, we don’t need that as Imam Malik (r) said, “Shari`ah with Tasawwuf gives you Reality.” You are a real one, because there is a secret between the two.
Look at the Atlantic and Mediterranean Ocean, do they meet? Anyone who knows geography, do they meet? Yes, they meet near Spain and Portugal, at Gibraltar, Jabal Taariq. They meet there, but they don’t transgress each other. The Atlantic comes from one side and the Mediterranean comes from the other. They meet in an area that allows you to survive. If they do not meet in that special place, then all the fish crossing between these two oceans will die. Scientifically, if these fish from one ocean don’t stop in the quarantine area, before passing to the other ocean, they will die. Any fish crossing from the Atlantic or crossing from the Mediterranean, if there was no quarantine area, they would die.
Allah made a quarantine area, how? Allahu Akbar! How? Allah Akbar, to make a quarantine area between the two oceans. What do the fish do when they want to cross? The fish from the Atlantic and Mediterranean enter the quarantine and live there together in unity for some time. At that time the water there is known by the fishes, and now it is known by the scientists that it is a quarantine area that they become accustomed to, that water accommodates them to live and then after a period of about 40 to 50 days, then the fish from the Mediterranean can move to the Atlantic and vice versa.
Allah made in the ocean a quarantine. That is why He said, Maraja al-bahrayni yaltaqiyaani baynahumaa barzakhun laa yabghiyaan “Between them is a quarantine/barrier that none of them can transgress.” He made the two oceans to come together. Allah said it in Holy Qur’an baynahumaa barzakhun laa yabghiyaan, between them there is a quarantine that they don’t take over each other, but they unite. And because of that the fish that go there sit there some time and then they can go to the Atlantic Ocean and those from the Atlantic can go to the Mediterranean. In Shari`ah and tariqah they meet, they meet together. You cannot say, “I learned tariqah only.” You can say “I learned Shari`ah only,” no problem, but you cannot say, “I learned Tasawwuf with no Shari`ah.” You can study Shari`ah with no Tasawwuf, yes, and you go to Paradise, yes, those who study Shari`ah go to Paradise as you have done what is required: Tawheed, Shahadah, salaah/prayers, siyaam/fasting, zakaat/charity and Hajj. If you do these you enter Paradise, no problem.
But if you don’t want to study Tasawwuf, you are still, for example, in the Mediterranean Ocean and you cannot go to the Atlantic, the huge ocean, and those who are in the huge ocean can still be in the huge ocean, but they cannot go to the Mediterranean. But when you take the Shari`ah as the basic structure in your building of Islam, then you take al-Imaan into your heart. Islam is not only one thing, religion is not only one, it is Islam, Imaan and Ihsaan. When you do only Islam, it means you are doing the Five Pillars, when you achieve Imaan you are reaching the `aqeedah, the belief, and you have to make your belief correct. You cannot claim no Shari`ah. That will make you kaafir when you claim you are receiving from Prophet (s) and from Paradise! They cannot accept that as you cannot jump, you must be bowing your head! So Islam is the Five Pillars, then you go to Imaan, which is the Six Pillars, then you go to Maqaam al-Ihsaan, which is Moral Excellence. That is Tasawwuf, to be of good manners, characters, to open your heart to everyone.
انما بعثت لاتمم مكارم الاخلاق
Innamaa bu`ithtu li utammimu makaarim al-akhlaaq.
The Prophet (s) said: I have been sent to perfect the best of conduct (your behavior and character).
“I have been sent to correct and perfect the manners of human beings,” because Shari`ah is an obligation so you cannot say, “I don’t want that,” as Allah obliged you to do it. Look at this carpet. It can be entirely black, or entirely white, as it was before they made the painting (dyed). You can still pray on it, but they decorate it so that it looks nice and it is more decorated. Because when it looks nice people will run for it. Also Tasawwuf, Maqaam ul-Ihsaan, makes you look nice but you need the carpet. You cannot say, “I don’t teach Shari`ah, only Tasawwuf,” as it means you are not yet educated in Shari`ah and are trying to run away from it. And there are too many who say this, especially in Europe, especially in the Far West and other countries. You have a lot of that.
So if you want the reality...one time `Abdul-Wahhab ash-Sha`ranee (q), one of the biggest scholars and one of the bigest Sufis, and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim loves him a lot and reads his books a lot, and he has a very nice book called Al-Ghunya, he said when he was asked about `Ilm azh-Zhaahir and `Ilm al-Baatin, the Knowledge of Outward and the Hidden Knowledge, he said, “What are you speaking about? For us there is nothing hidden, for us `Ilm azh-Zhaahir and `Ilm al-Baatin are two oceans, Zhaahir and Baatil, Haqeeqah, and they combine together, they merge together and we have one knowledge, `Ilm ul-Haqaa`iq, the Knowledge of Realities.”
One time Grandshaykh, Allah bless his soul, gave an example of the difference between Shari`ah and Haqeeqah, Realities. We have to put this in our mind. He said, “You are in a desert or jungle and there is a mountain far away and you come and reach the mountain and it is huge.” There are mountains 5,000 meters high, the Himalayas are 8,000 meters. “There is an animal on the top of the mountain, a creature.”
Who are the Four Imams? Imam Abu Hanifa (r), Imam Malik (r), Imam Shafi`ee (r) and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (r). Grandshaykh is describing, “The first imam comes and says, ‘This creature is a goat.’ The second imam comes and says, ‘This is a sheep.’ The third, Imam Shafi`ee (r) comes and says, ‘This is a deer,’ and the fourth one comes and says, ‘No, no, it is a camel.’ All the four imams agree that it is an animal, but none of them described whether it is a deer, a lamb, a goat or a camel.” He said, “Yes, this is basic, it is a creature, an animal.” So our knowledge is based on Shari`ah; what the Prophet (s) came with and the highest level of perfection is that everyone has to do the Five Pillars and the `Aqaaid, but in order to be more correct you have to climb the mountain to reach that creature and check on it: is it a deer or a sheep or a lamb or a goat or a cow. What is that? He looks, “Oh, this is a lamb.” He has to touch the two legs and the two hands, not only to look and say “this is a lamb” but look and touch. Look how precise you have to be. Islam is not easy!
لا راحة في الدين
Laa raahata fi ’d-deen.
There is no relaxation in religion.
You have to touch it, to see the hands, and to be able to identify what kind of eyes, nose and ears it has, then you may write, “This is a lamb,” or similarly, “This is a camel” or “this is a deer,” or, “All of them are lambs.” You have to check and you are imagining, you are thinking, you are using your mind, but sometimes you need to use your heart.
Tasawwuf is to go and check the reality of the issue. Shari`ah will give you the structure and Tasawwuf will give you the nice decorations. For example, this mosque is decorated all over with calligraphy. It is not an empty four walls like a warehouse. When you look around, you feel like you are in a paradise and when you look at a warehouse with no calligraphy, no decorations and no aayaat al-Qur’an or hadith of Prophet (s) you don’t feel to sit, you stay five minutes and then you want to run away! But when you look at Asmaa’u ’l-Husnaa, at the Ka`aba, at Madinat al-Munawarra, at the ayaat of Holy Qur’an, you feel more happy to stay and sit. So, Maqaam al-Ihsaan is Maqaam at-Tasawwuf that makes you to like to sit and be happy.
So you cannot jump to a high level of Tasawwuf which you are not sure about and you claim you are getting it from Prophet (s)! Many people come and say, “I sat at Grandshaykh’s maqaam,” meaning Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani (q), “and grandshaykh is telling me now to do this and that.” No, this is garbage so don’t claim that! Ask those who have already travelled that road. This tariqah is a highway. Some mureeds are at the beginning, some are at the middle and some are at the end. Ask those who have more experience. Is Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani (q) talking to you and telling you to do things opposite of what we know? No, impossible! And that’s why we have to be very careful and in order to avoid fitna we need to unite.
People claim that some people call others “Mawlana,” “Mawlana Dr. X,” “Mawlana Abdur Ra`uf.” They say, “Where did you get ‘Mawlana’ from? There is only one Mawlana!” No, no, you are not understanding! You are lowering the level of Mawlana when you consider him only “Mawlana”. Mawlana is Sultan, he doesn’t need to be “Mawlana” as Mawlana is Sultan al-Awliya! In Pakistan--and I love the Pakistanis, because some are saying now, “Tariqah is becoming Pakistani”--in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, the culture there teaches them to say to anyone respecful, “Mawlana,” even the one who calls adhaan is called “Mawlana.” They use that for anyone who advised them or they respect him; they are not taking the place of Mawlana Sultan al-Awliya. But others are saying that some students are taking the place of Mawlana Sultan al-Awliya and sitting in his place! Astaghfirullah, that is fitna and that is not accepted. There is only Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, may Allah bless him and give him long life.
In Egypt, they call mashay’ikh there “Mawlana,” ask Egyptians; they call them “Mawlana” or “Sayyidina.” If you don’t know ask the Egyptians. This is the culture, no problem. When you live in a mixed culture, what are they going to call you? Some call you “Mawlana,” some call you “Shaykh,” and some call you “Professor,” but they don’t call you “Sultan al-Awliya.” There is only one Sultan al-Awliya! They have to learn not to make fitna through that.
Then the other fitna--and there are too many fitnas--the other fitna is the one who was saying, “Mawlana has only one khalifah, Shaykh Muhammad.” He said it recently in one of his lectures and he said that Baha`uddin is Shaykh Muhammad’s vizier. Alhamdulillah that Muhammad is his khalifah as you said, and Baha`uddin is his vizier, is better than that you come here and sit, because then we would have too much fitna. And that person claimed in one of his lectures which is taped on the Internet, that Grandshaykh (q) told him not to follow anyone except Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q), and that after Mawlana Shaykh Nazim he will not follow anyone! That is on a video on the Internet and people can check it.
After one to two months, in another video he changed. He said, “There is no khalifah except Shaykh Muhammad.” But then why don’t you take baya` from him? In order to give him a good lesson, I went down all the way in front of people to teach that person humbleness. I am not claiming to be humble, but what I did, I ask, can anyone do that? So I taught him that you have to lower your level, then Allah will raise you up. After I did that here in your presence, you were here (Shaykh Muhammad), I did that Shaykh Muhammad, and then I went up to Mawlana Shaykh and he said, “Very good! Allah loves you, Prophet (s) loves you, I love you. You did something that no one can do, but I want to tell you something. Shaykh Muhammad needs your support, give him your support, you have power, give him from your power.” And this is from Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, Allah is my Witness and Qur’an is witness and the Prophet (s) is my witness! We want to show those who try to make fitna that there is no need to do that.
I will say that Shaykh Muhammad is khalifah any time and thousands of times and thousands of times I will take his hand for bay`a and I do it in front of jama`ah, I don’t mind! That will not lower your level, instead it will raise you up when you are humbling and humiliating yourself. The example of that is Abu Yazid al-Bistami (q) and everyone must take that example. He is one of the greatest scholars and awliya that even Ibn Taymiyya, the head of the Salafi/Wahabi teaching accepted. Even he accepted the scholarship and the sainthood of Abu Yazid al-Bistami (q).
Abu Yazid al-Bistami (q) was knocking and knocking at Allah’s Door (swt). For a while Allah left him outside, then an angel came and said, “O Abu Yazid! Do you want to enter?”
He said, “Yes, of course! I am hearing that voice, I want to enter.”
Then he heard the voice coming saying, itruk nafsaka wa ta`al, “Leave your ego and come to Me, don’t come to Me with your ego!”
Those who are claiming something, take example from Abu Yazid al-Bistami, who was seeking to enter with adab even though he was a huge wali. He didn't say, “Prophet (s) told me this and signed me these khulafa who are being assigned are the ones assigned by the Prophet (s).” You see them on the Internet. They have lists of people they assign to different countries and they reject the others, the ones that Mawlana Shaykh Nazim put. You cannot claim you are renewing the tariqah Mawlana Shaykh is still there, may Allah gave him a long life, 137 years in-sha-Allah. The heavenly age for everyone is 137, but this is the subject of another suhbah. He was told, “O Abayazid!” Don't be a peacock and raise your feathers, putting this one as a new khalifah and taking out the others saying “this one is not suitable”; removing even the one Mawlana assigned and yet forgetting the name of the one in Pakistan, and then daring to claim the list is from Rasoolullah (s)!
Look at this poor man (a mureed.) I met him in Singapore. He came and said to me, “I am a convert and I am from Panama. And there is no one there.”
I told him, “Go and do dhikr by yourself.”
Then Shaykh Abdur-Ra`uf went to see him and alhamdulillah now they have about ten, fifteen people doing dhikr. They are still doing dhikr non-stop. After this when he has one hundred people, some Panamanian will go to them saying that we need to establish Dhikr in Panama. They won't know how long that one was struggling to establish Naqshbandi tariqah in Panama. They see he is associated with me then they will say “this one is wrong” and they will send a new one and say, “Follow this one, as the representative in Panama,” splitting the tariqah. Is this tariqah?
People are not happy. O our friend, calm yourself down; it is better not to be too high. That is my advice. Try to come and take baya` from Shaykh Muhammad as a gesture of respect and to unify the people! That is what I did in order to unify people. I said to myself, “Never mind, Mawlana will be happy.” And you don't know what will happen! Ya`izzu man yashaa wa yudhillu man yashaa., “Allah raises whom He likes and puts down whom He likes.”
There is not only one wali. We have to know that there are 124,000 awliya, on the number of Sahaba, inheriting from them, and they are inheritors of 124,000 Prophets and Messengers. Mawlana is inheritor of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). There are five Qutbs and forty grandshaykhs.
Don't confuse things! There is Mawlana Shaykh and there is Grandshaykh who is Grandshaykh ‘Abdullah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani (q). Don’t say [I am claiming the title] ‘Shaykh’ and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim is ‘Grandshaykh.’ Don’t try to instigate fitna. There are forty of them to the Prophet (s).
There are 313 nabiyyin mursal and there are 313 great Naqshbandi masha’ykh inheriting from that ocean! There are 7,007 Naqshbandi shaykhs inheriting from Sultan al-Awliya directly and the rest (of the 124,000) are from other tariqahs. Many other tariqas have awliyaullah! You cannot say Sayyidina `Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani (q) did not have a calipha or his calipha is not a wali. You cannot claim that other tariqahs don’t have awliyaullah as all awliyaullah know each other and they are united; they work together.
So we have to be careful that there are 124,000 wali and there are five qutbs. Mawlana names whom he likes as qutb. You cannot say “I didn’t hear it” or “he appointed himself.” You cannot say that I did it by myself! Mawlana appoints and Mawlana takes away representatives.
I challenge you to come and take baya` from the hand of Shaykh Muhammad broadcast on the Internet, only to show respect and humbleness. I did that to show there is no problem and that we are united, this is my brother-in-law. You tried to do fitna between brothers and sisters in your last video making new appointees. Don’t try to do fitna between families that is haraam. Shaykh Muhammad is more humble than anyone and when I congratulated him in London, he said, “No, you are better than me, more than anyone, you did more for tariqah.” Don't be like the ones going for Hajj after Hajj is already over. May Allah forgive us and bless us and support us. May Allah keep us united. We love to be unite and calm down.
What is the reason for this fitna coming up every two to three years? Is there any reason? I am begging you to tell me is there any reason for this fitna. I don’t understand? The last fitna was cleared up, it was a test, but then this new one came.
May Allah keep you higher than me, I don't mind. May Allah give you higher places and with your baraka I will go with you. I am not a person who is crazy, no, I am at your threshold. Let us unite. Tariqah is to unite, not to separate as then there will be no benefit; the only benefit is for Shaytan. Awliyaullah are not happy with this situation, you know that. Is the Prophet (s) telling you to do that? Are awliyaullah telling you to do that? If so, tell me and at least then I will know my space.
May Allah forgive us all. Inshaa-Allah, we will continue tomorrow with Mawlana’s blessings. I love you and respect you. We love you and we love everyone in this tariqah. I love you, we worked hard together for this tariqah, you and me. Stop this fitna! We were together in Grandshaykh’s time and are together in this time. Shaykh `Abdu ’s-Salaam is here and he knows that fitna is not necessary. wa min Allah at-tawfeeq bi hurmati ‘l-Fatiha.
He was Grandshaykh’s helper for over 50 years. I knew Grandshaykh before he came to Grandshaykh, in 1958 when Abu Bakr was the khaadim, servant, of Grandshaykh. I know the first helper of Grandshaykh who lived for 107 years and he was buried in Aleppo. I met him the first time I came to see Grandshaykh. Abu Bakr went down to Sayyidina Muhiyyideen’s Mosque and brought for us some clothes at that time.
I pray Allah gives you happiness and long life and for all of us to be together. We are one, we were all of us were with Grandshaykh, him, me, you and others. We must be happy that we saw Grandshaykh and we were with Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani (q) also for 50 years.
