Jumu`ah Khutbah
As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
It is a big honor to be in the Home of Allah (swt). It is a big honor to be in the House of the Lord of Heavens. We thank Him. We appreciate His Favor upon us. May Allah (swt) always make us from Ahlu ‘dh-Dhikr, from the people of Dhikrullah. We have run to the masjid for Dhikrullah, acting on the Order of Allah (swt). If you hear the call from the masjid on Friday, on Jumu`ah, run to the Dhikr of Allah (swt). All mu’mins have heard that. All Muslims have heard that. Most mu’mins have read that. Most Muslims have read that. Inshaa-Allah, Allah (swt) allows them and gives them an opening so they can run to the House of Allah (swt) because most of them are busy with dunya. What can you do?
May Allah (swt) forgive all of us. May He always allow His mention on our tongues, His love in our hearts and how to please Him in our minds. That is what the mu’min is asking for. The mu’min is seeking to please Allah (swt). Sooner or later you’re going to leave this dunya and move. You don’t know when it’s going to be.
Yesterday I read that verse and then I thought about it in Isha. Asta`eedhu billah:
وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهَا وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
Wa lan yuʾakhkhira ’Llāhu idhā jāʾa ajaluhā, wa’ Llāhu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn.
But to no soul will Allah grant respite when the time appointed (for it) has come; and Allah is well acquainted with (all) that ye do. (Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn), 63:11)
Allah (swt) will not delay, will not give extra time for a soul whose turn has come. How many days do you have left? “Ten years.” Lo and behold, three days later he is gone. How many days do you have left? “Fifty years.” Lo and behold, one week later he or she is gone. Take heed. Understand the Qur’an, O mu’min. Allah (swt) will never, ever delay a soul. Allah (swt) knows how many days you have left. Alhamdulillah. He gave us another day. He gave us another week, the week that has passed. He gave us another month. We are in Sha`ban al-Mu`azhzham. Do your best, O mu’min, to be on the way of Haqq.
لازم طريق الحق Lāzim ṭarīq al-ḥaqq, as Awliyaullah have said. Be attached, be glued to the way of Haqq. Be glued to the Way of Allah (swt). Be aware of Him. Be careful of your duty to Him, O Muslim, O mu’min. Alhamdulillah, we have come to the masjid, we have come to the House of our Beloved. May Allah (swt) us to be from the good ones.
We were greeted at the door by whom? By the angels. Allah (swt) sends the angels to the rows and at the doors of the masaajid, to greet the mu’mins that are coming to the Lord of Heavens. When you go to a sultan, are you greeted by the sultan at the door or does he send you people to greet you? He sends the angels to the doors, He allows us into His Presence and that is a big ni`mah of Allah (swt). It is cold outside. Everybody is bundled up. Why do you bundle up? “It’s harmful outside.” Why is it harmful? Why are you covering yourself, from what? “It is bitter cold outside.” What happens? “It’s harmful. You can lose a finger or two. You can have frostbite or hypothermia. You have to cover yourself, protect yourself from the bitter cold.”
That is libaasu ‘d-dunya. That is the dress of dunya. The dress of dunya is a desire to shelter yourself from the cold that is outside. Why? Because it’s harmful. What happens if it’s harmful? You might get sick, you might get injured, you might die. You might not make it. Allah (swt) has sent you libaasu ‘d-dunya to cover yourself, to protect yourself in dunya. He has sent you the dress, the scarves and hats to protect you from what harms you in dunya. He has also sent you what prevents you from harm Akhirah.
He did not neglect your baatin. Allah (swt) did not neglect your interior. He covered you externally. He covered you with things that protect you from dying. He sent you libaas, clothes by that. Rain came down and gave you cotton, linen, and gave the sheep some vegetation to eat. You use the cotton to protect yourself from the bitter cold.
How about your interior? Did Allah (swt) neglect your baatin? Allah (swt) has sent you libaasu ‘t-taqwa. Where is your taqwa? Where is the dress of piety that He has sent through the Heavenly Messages? The Lord of Heavens has sent to you the dress of righteousness through the heavenly books and heavenly messengers and heavenly prophets. Where are you, O man, from wearing the dress of piety, the dress of righteousness? Nowhere to be found. Human beings are heedless to the max. “Be careful. Bundle up when you go outside, you might get hurt. It’s bitter cold weather.”
How about your ego? Isn’t your ego bitter? It is harmful to you and harmful to others. Are you covering your ego with the dress of piety that God has sent to you in the Heavenly Books? No. Muslims are worse than non-Muslims. Nobody is dressing in that piety dress, righteousness dress, nobody even thinks that Allah (swt) is looking at them. Whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not, He is watching every action you do. He is hearing every word you say and He knows every state you are in. Be aware.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا
Inna Allāha kāna ʿalaykum raqīban.
Indeed, Allah is ever Watchful over you. (Sūrat al-Nisāʾ 4:1)
Allah (swt) is describing Himself. I am watching over you, Ever-Watchful over you.
لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ
Lā taʾkhudhuhu as-sinatun wa lā nawm.
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him, nor sleep. (Āyat al-Kursī, 2:255)
“I don’t sleep.” Do you think Allah (swt) sleeps? He knows what is inside of you. He knows what you say and what you do. Where are we from that, O Muslim? Mashaa-Allah, everybody is running to buy the Louis Vuitton scarves and the Gucchi coat. Why? “It’s better, it’s nice.” How about your inside? It’s as filthy as the rooms outside there, full of anger and hatred to others. When are you going to correct yourself, O man? How do we correct ourselves? We take that dress of piety. “Explain that dress of piety, O shaykh. Let us know what is the dress of piety and honesty and righteousness and truthfulness that God has sent from the Heavens up onto us.”
If you want to know how to dress the dress of piety and righteousness, O man, what has come through heavenly messages are three steps. First, acknowledge the existence of the Creator and declare His Oneness. That’s how you protect yourself from the harmful, Eternal punishment, al-`adhabu ‘l-mukhallad, the `adhaab that is forever. To protect yourself from Eternal punishment, Allah (swt) has told you, “Declare My Existence. Acknowledge My Existence.” Mashaa-Allah, most of the world now are atheists. Nobody is acknowledging the existence of the Creator. You declare His Existence and then you declare His Oneness, His Greatness, His Majesty, His Glory, not according to your imagination. No. This rock, this moon, this sun, this tree, this and that, it’s not that. It is something you don’t see, something you don’t hear, something you don’t feel. It is out of your perception.
The Lord of Heavens is not like you. The Lord of Heavens is not in your imagination. Nobody can understand who He is. That is why Rasoolullah (s) said, “Don’t think about Allah (swt). Think about what He created so you can reach the knowledge of His Existence.”
The first dress of piety, O man, is to acknowledge the existence of the Creator and His watchfulness over you. The second is to avoid wrongdoings: ithm, dhanb, sayyi’a, ma`asiya, however you want to call it, disobedience, sins, mistakes. Avoid all wrongdoings. Don’t harm yourself and don’t harm others. Don’t do it knowingly. We make mistakes. We miscalculate. We misjudge. You can do something that was not intended but it happened. Alhamdulillah, Allah (swt) opened the door of repentance for that but not intentionally.
As you dress yourself to protect yourself from the bitter cold, dress yourself to protect yourself from your bitter ego that spews hate, that spews anger, that spews jealousy. Get rid of that. Take on the heavenly message that has come, that dress of righteousness and piety. The third is the higher level, the level of Awliyaullah. Our level, the common people, is to declare and acknowledge the existence of the Creator and His messengers and declare the Oneness of His Lordship. The second is to avoid all wrongdoings as much as you can.
The third is Awliyaullah, Anbiyaullah. That is not our level. That is khawaas, the special ones. They leave everything that busies them from Allah (swt). They leave everything that distracts them from Allah (swt). They leave everything that takes them away from Allah (swt). Leave whatever makes you busy from being in the Divine Presence. Mashaa-Allah, tell this to the Muslims who are all working on the day of Jumu`ah at the hour of Jumu`ah. Why are you busy? What is making you busy from coming to the Presence of your Lord? No excuse. If you’re sick, if you’re traveling, whatever it is, there are some excuses but most of them have no excuse. They just have to work more. Work more and leave and go.
O Muslim, whenever you bundle up for this bitter cold, know that you have to bundle up internally against your enemy, your bitter ego. It is bitter to everyone, from dunya, nafs, hawa, Shaytan. Clean your inside by taking on the heavenly message of piety, the heavenly message of righteousness. How do you do that?
A Muslim, a salik, the one who is seeking the pleasure of Allah (swt), has to be careful of his duty to Allah (swt) and be aware of Allah (swt) and he has to watch Him in every moment. In every state you have to watch that Allah (swt) is with you. In every action you have to know and watch that Allah (swt) is with you. That is lāzim ṭarīq al-ḥaqq as we said in the beginning. Be steadfast. Continue on the way of Haqq. Rasoolullah (s) said in his Holy Hadith, “Keep your heart with Allah (swt). Keep your breaths with Allah (swt).” In all your states, watch that Allah (swt) is with you because He is near to you. He is watching over you. He knows your states. He sees your actions. He hears your words. Be watchful of that, O insaan.
There is a story I heard from our teachers and it’s mentioned in the books of Awliyaullah. If you understand this story, you have made it. There was an `alim with his students but this `alim preferred or brought near to him one specific one and the other students were jealous, “Why is this one important? Why is this one closer to the shaykh? Why?”
So, they went to the shaykh and they said, “Yaa Sayyidee, why is this one close to you? Why is this one being brought near to you?”
“I will show you.”
As I heard from our teachers, he told them, “O my students, this is a chicken. Go slaughter it where no one sees you.” They were all happy. The order came from the shaykh. “Let’s do something good and then we can have a nice time and give whatever is left over to the poor or share it with others.” They all went and slaughtered a chicken except one. He came back. The chicken was not slaughtered. He asked, “Why didn’t you slaughter the chicken?”
“Yaa Sayyidee, you ordered me to slaughter the chicken where no one sees me. I did not find one spot that Ahad, The One is not seeing me.”
The one who is close to the shaykh, Allah (swt) is in his heart. Allah (swt) is in his mind. Allah (swt) is on his tongue. That’s why he is special. It’s not what is visible to you outside. It’s what’s on the inside. That shaykh has seen what is on the inside. That man has understood that Allah (swt) is Ever-Watchful over him, Raqeeb. “Yaa Sayyidee, you said a spot that nobody sees you. I did not find a spot that nobody sees me.” That special one has Allah (swt) in his heart. That’s why he is special.
Understand, O mu’min. Keep Allah (swt) in your heart. When you walk, you walk by Allah (swt). When you move, you move by Allah (swt). When you see, you see by Allah (swt). You see Allah (swt) in every dharrah of this universe. In every atom, in every picturesque or scenic view you are looking at, you see Allah (swt)’s Actions. You see Him. Where are we from that? Nowhere. All we see is Instagram. All we see is Snapchat. All we see is what’s happening around the world here and there. Where are you from seeing Allah (swt)? Very few.
May Allah (swt) allow us to be on tariqu ‘l-Haqq. Lāzim ṭarīq al-ḥaqq. Continue and glue yourself to the way of Allah (swt) and know who is close to that shaykh. What is his specialty? You don’t know. Nobody knows what’s in the hearts. May Allah (swt) forgive us.
