Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.
What you achieve with your eyes and ears will be forgotten unless you keep repeating it, but what comes to your heart from the spiritual world, from the heart of Rasulullah (s), will stay with you if your heart is clean.
Remember what Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) used to say: "If you put soup in a kid's potty, would you say it's clean?" No, you would not accept it. It doesn't seem right. Do you put water, coffee or juice in a dirty cup? No, you first clean it. So to receive from Rasulullah's heart, your heart has to be clean just like a cup must be clean in order to pour milk, water, coffee or tea in it. Then you are assured that it is clean; it's not going to waste, nor will it make you sick.
Knowledge that comes from Rasulullah (s) is lasts, and everything you read and memorize will go. Do you remember anything you learned in high school? It's gone. Whatever you learned in university is gone.
The evidence that your heart must be clean to receive heavy knowledge is in Holy Qur'an. Asta`eedhu billah:
وَمَا كُنْتَ تَتْلُوْا مِنْ قَبْلِهٖ مِنْ كِتٰبٍ وَّلَا تَخُطُّهٗ بِيَمِيْنِكَ اِذًا لَّارْتَابَ الْمُبْطِلُوْنَ
(O Prophet), you did not recite any Book before, nor did you write it down with your hand. (Surat al-Ankabut, 29:48)
The knowledge that comes to Rasulullah (s) is from Allah's Divine Presence. They are clear verses in the heart of the one who has been given knowledge. That true knowledge did not come from him by reading with his eyes, nor by listening to someone reciting from a book, and he did not write anything. He received clear verses of Divine Knowledge straight to his heart, as did the prophets before him. They all received knowledge directly to their clean, purified hearts. That's what we need to have. The heart has to be clean, then you turn to Allah (swt).
In Sayyidina Salih's village there were nine people making fasad, corruption, mischief. They didn't make things right, rather they spoiled things. [In the spiritual interpretation] these are the nine elements that you have in your own heart.
If you want to find Allah (swt), to have victory over the people who are causing mischief in your heart, what must you do? Because we talk about victory in this external, outer world. The Anbiya got victory on Ashura, and we know what happened to Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) on this day, but how about your spiritual world? Turn inside!
A group of mine creations reside in your inner bring, and they spoil your heart, making it unable to receive from Rasulullah's heart.
وَكَانَ فِى الْمَدِيْنَةِ تِسْعَةُ رَهْطٍ يُّفْسِدُوْنَ فِى الْاَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُوْنَ
And there were mine family heads in the city, causing corruption in the land and not amending [its affairs]. (Surat an-Naml, 27:48)
In the city nine people made fasad. We are taking from the words of Awliya. What did Awliyaullah say? We are taking the spiritual meaning now. They said your heart contains nine evil powers that you must clean out. When you do that, your heart will be truly clean.
Sayyidina Salih (as) was given victory over them.
اَنَّا دَمَّرْنٰهُمْ وَقَوْمَهُمْ
We have destroyed them and their people. (Surat an-Naml, 27:51)
Allah (swt) gives you victory over your enemy, al-qawm al-mufisideen. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) used to pray, "Ya Rabbee, give us victory over these people that are corrupting our hearts." Awliyaullah have said the evil powers in your being consist of five senses and the four elements from which you are composed: fire, air, water and earth. These four elements are destroying your heart and you have to fight them.
THE FOUR ENEMY ELEMENTS
From fire kibr was born: arrogance, thinking you are higher than others—because fire elevates. Kibr is in your heart because of that element from which you were created.
From water hirs was born: greed took deeper root. Water makes you grow. When trees drink water, their roots extend further. "I want to grow more, I want to have more, I want to dive more, I want to take more," all of that is in your heart.
That's why Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q), Mawlana Shaykh Abdullah (q), and Awliyaullah don't give `Ilm al-Ladunni in such a dirty heart, because your ego will use it to have more kibr, pride and arrogance, and more hirs, greed. You're not ready yet, first you have to clean yourselves from these.
From air, from shahwa comes: lust and hubb ash-shahawaat, love of the desires.
From earth, bukhl comes: stinginess. When earth hardens, it keeps things inside, it does not let it out. You keep whatever you have.
THE FIVE ENEMY PHYSICAL SENSES
You want your eyes to enjoy what they see, you let them go, free to watch anything you want, view and enjoy. Halal, haram, it doesn't matter. Your ears, same. You set them free to hear whatever you want, enjoy and have pleasure from everything you are hearing. Halal, haram, there is nothing there. Taste anything you want, there is no halal, no haram. Smell anything you want. When you give freedom to your five senses, they make your heart filthy, dirty, unclean, tainted.
So when you hear the message from Waliyullah, and you say, "Ya Rabbee, I accept that message and I am moving, I am muhaajir, I am leaving the dunya and moving to Mawla," you must find Allah (swt) has made you victorious over the corrupting elements in you. When you are free from desires and misuse of your physical senses, then you have a clean heart. This only happens with Allah's (swt) support.
Then your heart, body, and senses are free from the nine evil powers that corrupted your heart: now you are ready because Allah (swt) has emptied your heart from them.
First you believe in the Message, and you keep yourself away from the nine elements and you ask Allah (swt) for nusrat. That's why Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) always says, Rabbee 'n-surna `ala 'l-qawm al-mufsideen, wa 'n-sur sultanana Sultan al-Muslimeen, "O our Lord, grant us victory over the corrupting people and give victory to the Sultan of the Muslims," because you need that Sultan, that Waliyullah, that guide to help you overcome the nine elements.
When you are as such, Waliullah, as Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) is saying: "When your heart is clean, empty, and these nine elements are eradicated, the Qutb will look with the Haqiqat at-Tawajjuh, and directs himself into your heart, where he dresses you from what he has."
'What he has' is what he received from Rasulullah (s), specifically, as we said, "These divine knowledges have come straight to the chest and to the heart of the one that was given the knowledge." These are Awliyaullah and the Qutbs.
So when you find the Qutb and free yourself of ego and clean your heart (as explained), then the Qutb will look at your heart and dress you from `Ilm al-Ladunni, Divine Knowledge.
Then arrogance, greed, lust, stinginess will not exist in your heart any more, so you will not misuse the knowledge you received. Then you will let others know what Allah (swt) has given you and share it with others.
Then your eyes, ears, tongue, taste, speech, smell, and touch will be restrained, only looking at halal. There is no longer anything inside you to make you misuse yourself. That's when you are ready to receive Divine knowledge.
The Qutb directs himself to your heart and dresses you in what he has, from his level, because you become his mirror. What he has will reflect on you.
