Jumu'ah Khutbah
O mu’mins! O believers! (Audio cut)...in the night hours, no wife, nothing. It’s all finished. You’re by yourself with Allah (swt), so try to make every night like that. Not only the last ten nights in Shahru Ramadan but every night you have to be up like Rasoolullah (s), like Sayyida Maryam (a). It is said that her feet and legs were swollen from standing up. Rasoolullah (s) was the same. That has to be the character of men and women. Also, Fatima az-Zahra (r), Hadrat Aisha (r), Sahabah kiraam (r) all tried their best to be up at night. Go to sleep after `Isha, wake up a few hours before Fajr and be with Allah (swt). Sever the ties.
Now you are learning how to sever the ties with your desires. There is no more eating, no more drinking, no more smoothies, no more ice cream, no more coffee or tea, nothing. You have severed the ties with your bodily pleasures and you are thinking about the future. “What will happen to me on the Day of Judgement? What will happen to me when I have done all of these sins and mistakes?” You are accounting for yourself this month. It’s a ni`mah of Allah (swt) upon us. Don’t think that Ramadan is a bad time or a difficult time. Actually, it is the time when Allah (swt) is reminding you to ask forgiveness, to repent from the mistakes you have done, to be more generous, to be more kind, to be more tender, to hold your tongue, otherwise your fast goes away. Hold your lying and cheating.
In this month, Allah (swt) is teaching humanity how to become better, but humanity is running away. Even some Muslims say, “It’s very difficult. We cannot do it.” They are running away from the wisdom that Allah (swt) has put in this month. The mu’min understands that. Who is getting that in their heads? Very few. What is after this life? The mu’min knows that after this life is death. Don’t you see the obituaries everyday? I have a habit of looking at the obituaries everyday. I saw, “SubhaanAllah. This guy was around when I was young. Now he’s dead. This lady was around when I was young and now she’s dead.”
My turn is coming. Your turn is coming, O insaan! After this life is death. What are you preparing for that, O insaan? The one who is not a mu’min does not believe. They don’t believe in anything after this life. Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur’an in Surah al-Furqan, asta’eedhubillah:
بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِمَن كَذَّبَ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ سَعِيرًا
Nay they deny the hour (of the judgment to come): but We have prepared a blazing fire for such as deny the hour. (Surat al-Furqan, 25:11)
Bal kadhaboo bi ‘s-sa`a.Verily they have denied the Hour. They have denied when you are up from your grave in the Divine Presence. They have denied Judgement Day. They have denied Qiyamah. Allah (swt) says this about non-Muslims. They are already denying that. What happens when they deny that? Allah (swt) continues in that verse, wa `atadna liman kadhaba bi ‘s-saa’ati sa`eera.
“We have prepared for the ones who have denied the coming before Me.” What has He prepared for them? Sa’eer. That is fire that ignites very quickly and very high. It is a very flammable fire. Not only in the Hereafter, Allah (swt) has prepared for those who have denied Him, denied the prophets, denied the messengers, denied the heavenly books and put them in fire here in dunya. Those who have denied the Judgement Day are burning in flammable fire. Look around you in this world. Which kaafir is not burning in fire, physical and spiritual? You can see it. Those who have denied the coming Hour are now in very flammable fire because of their denial. Leave those ones. We ask Allah (swt) to guide them. But the mu’min has to prepare and know that the time is coming.
Awliyaullah have said you have to prepare yourself for Mawla. Prepare yourself for Allah (swt). They say, maa alhaaqqa `an mawlaaka fahuwa dunyaaka. “Whatever distracts you from your Lord, Mawla, from Allah (swt) is your dunya.” You are asking, “What is dunya?” It is whatever distracts you from His worship. It can be anything that has taken you away from the remembrance of Allah (swt), from the worship of Allah (swt), from the obedience of Allah (swt) into disobedience of Him. That is dunya for you. It can be anything. It can be one tree. Some people love their trees. They go out in the yard from morning until evening. “What are you doing?” “Trimming my trees. Trimming my bushes.” “What happened in your eight or ten hours?” “It’s okay. It is exercise.”
It has taken you away from the remembrance of your Lord. That is an example. People do it for fun or benefit, Allah (swt) knows. But whatever distracts you from the worship of your Lord is dunya for you. They go out to the car wash for ten hours, polishing every single inch of their car. What happened to these hours that you have wasted. Or the Pakistanis who love cricket. There are five days of cricket. At least soccer is only three hours and it’s finished. Five days, one week, two weeks. What are you watching for eight hours a day? Somebody batting a ball.
The mu’min has to be awake. You have to understand that whatever distracts you from Allah (swt) is dunya for you. You have to leave it. You have to sever ties with that as you have sever ties in Ramadan. Allah (swt) has given you an example. You train and then you continue training. The trainer tells you what to do but he doesn’t tell you to do it every time. He shows you the way.
You severed your ties in Ramadan. Why don’t you continue, O insaan? Don’t be distracted by what distracts you from Allah (swt).
When Hadrat Rabi`a al-`Adawwiya (r)’s husband died, `ulama came to her. She was Waliya. She was from Awliyaullah. `Ulama came to her and said, “Your husband has died. Now you have to marry.” You know, a woman has to marry when her husband dies. She said, “Tell me who is the most knowledgeable among you and I will marry that one.” They said, “This one.” They brought an `alim who was the most knowledgeable among all of them. She said, “I will ask you four questions. If you answer them, I am for you.” He said, “Ask. Inshaa-Allah, Allah (swt) will allow me to give you your answers.” That was an humble `alim.
Nowadays they say, “Ask me anything.” They sit on a chair. “What’s your question?” Europeans, Americans, Arabs, Africans all sit on chairs thinking they know everything. Mashaa-Allah, continue with your arrogance and pride. I don’t want to mention the name of this `alim but he is also Waliyullah. It is a teaching for the ones who want Allah (swt). In the heart of Rabi`a al-`Adawiya (r) was nobody except Allah (swt) and Rasoolullah (s). Rasoolullah (s) is from Allah (swt). He is a ni`mah. He is a rahmah. Of course he has to be in your heart, otherwise you have missed the boat.
That `alim was ready to answer her questions. She said, “O `alim, O Waliyullah, if I die and leave this world, do I leave on Iman or not?” He said, “This is unknown. Only Allah (swt) knows.” He didn’t say anything. He just told the truth.
She said, “When they put me in the grave and Munkar wa Nakeer, the two angels that will come for questioning, am I going to be able to answer them correctly or not?” He said, “I don’t know. That is also Ghayb.”
She said, “Okay, when I come up from my grave...” وطائرات الكتب wa taa’iratu’l-kutub, Awliyaullah say the books will fly to reach each one of us like grasshoppers. Do you have grasshoppers in Africa? In Pakistan and Arab countries there are millions. They come like a cloud. It is said whenever you see grasshoppers coming, you have to remember the Kutub coming. You have to remember the scrolls coming upon humanity on the Day of Judgement. The grasshoppers come onto every branch and every leaf. You might be that branch or that leaf. That book will come to you.
She asked, “When the books fly to each one of us, will I get my book on the right or on the left?” He said, “I don’t know. That is Ghayb.” She said, “When Allah (swt) says, ‘A group in Jannah, a group in sa`eer, the flammable fire,’ which group am I going to be in?” He said, “I don’t know. That is also Ghayb, Unknown.” She said, “How can the one who has knowledge of these four issues be busy with marriage?”
She saw marriage as a distraction from her Eternal Love. She wanted to be in the ocean of her Beloved’s Eternal Love. She was not asking for the love of a husband, a wife, a girlfriend or a boyfriend. That doesn’t matter. That is halal and haram. They have left halal and they have left haram. They have left both. They have left dunya and Akhirah.
These are Awliyaullah. They are not after their pleasures, whether halal or haram. They are after the pleasure of being in the Love Oceans of Allah (swt). They have left Yuhiboonahum ka-hubillah.
Yet there are men who take (for worship) others besides Allah, as equal (with Allah.: They love them as they should love Allah. But those of Faith are overflowing in their love for Allah. If only the unrighteous could see, behold, they would see the penalty: that to Allah belongs all power, and Allah will strongly enforce the penalty. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:165)
Allah (swt) has said, “I have servants I love and they love Me,” nothing else. Are you from them, O insaan, O mu’min? The non-Muslims have forgotten that and they are in hell now. Allah (swt) has made them taste a little bit of that. Maybe they can return.
And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return. (Surat as-Sajdah, 32:21)
Wa la-nudheeqanahum min ‘l-`adhabi ‘l-adnaa. “We will make them taste the near and small punishment before they reach the heavy punishment, so they can return back.” When Allah (swt) creates a problem or a difficulty or fire or war, Allah (swt) is making you remember Him so you come back. Not everything is bad as you see it, O human being.
Leave those ones alone. May Allah (swt) guide them. The mu’min has to be busy with answering these four questions. It is said if you answer the first one correctly, if you leave dunya on iman, everything that comes to you is easy. They say the first step in Akhirah is your qabr, your grave. If your qabr is okay, everything coming after it is fine. If your qabr is difficult then everything after it is even worse.
You have to make sure you leave this world on iman. How do you know if you will leave this world on iman or not? There are angels that will come to you, O those on the way to death. All of us are on the way to death, it’s just a matter of hours, days, months or years. Everybody is walking dead. Every breath you take is one step closer to your death. You have to know how to use your breath as well.
How will the angels come? To the mu’mins they will come, asta`eedhu billah:
ٱلَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ طَيِّبِينَ يَقُولُونَ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
alladheena tatawafahumu ‘l-malaa’ikatu tayyibeena yaqooluna salaamun `alaykum.
(Namely) those whose lives the angels take in a state of purity, saying (to them), "Peace be on you; enter you the Garden, because of (the good) which you did (in the world). (Surat an-Nahl, 16:32)
If angels come to you with the salaam, greetings from Allah (swt), if you are tayyib. When she asked him the question, “Am I going to leave this world on iman or not?” He said, “I don’t know. Allah (swt) knows Ghayb,” but he also knew that if you are tayyib, a good one, a pious one, a kind, tender one, a worshiper, a servant of Allah (swt) doing good and preaching good and doing your best for your family, for yourself and for your community, you are tayyib. Angels will come and say, “Salaamun `alaykum.” In another ayah, “Tibtum.” Salaamun `alaykum udkhulu -l-Jannah. “You have been granted peace upon you,” and then you enter Jannah.
How do you become tayyib? If you want to leave this dunya on iman and if you want angels to tell you, “Salamun `alaykum,” and to find you tayyib, pious, how do you become tayyib? Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur’an, at-tayyibaatu li ‘t-tayyibeen.
Women impure are for men impure, and men impure for women impure and women of purity are for men of purity, and men of purity are for women of purity: these are not affected by what people say: for them there is forgiveness, and a provision honorable. (Surat al-Noor, 24:26)
Sweet ones are for sweet ones. It is for Hadrat `Aisha Siddiqa (r) of course and it is for Rasoolullah (s). Another meaning of these two words is that tayyibaat are al-`amalu as-saaliha wa’l-akhlaaqu ‘l-kareema, the good deeds and the noble character are the sweet ones. They will find the sweet ones from the pious people.
If you want to be tayyib, if you want the angels to find you in that state and they will grant you peace from Allah (swt) and Jannah then you have to be busy with `amalu ‘s-saaliha. You have to be busy with good acts. You have to be busy with kind acts. You have to be busy with tender acts, not destroying and killing and maiming others and claiming you’re going to go to Jannah.
You have gone so astray, O human being. Your mind is not a mind anymore, basically it is a desire to control and to be on top. That is not what a human being is. A human being is tawa`aduh. A human being is humble. Why? Allah (swt) created you from soil. You are down. You have to be humble. That is your origin. Your origin is the earth. The earth never makes itself high, fire does. Shaytan is from fire. Shaytan makes himself high up. He has kibr. He has arrogance and pride. Insaan is from earth, tawa`aduh, humbleness.
If you want to be a sweet one, tayyib, and you want the angels to find you in that state and give you salaam, peace, you have to be busy with al-`amalu ‘s-saaliha wa ’l-akhlaaqu ‘l-kareema. Be busy with good acts and be busy with correcting your character to a noble character and Allah (swt) will accept you in His Presence. How do you do that? How do you correct your character? What did the Sahaabah (r) do? It is said that the Arabs back then in jahiliyya were like beasts. They did not have any human character in them, they had beastly characters in them which is killing, corruption and making mischief on earth. That is the characteristics of beasts of the wild.
Insaan has none of that. On the contrary, he has rahmah and shafaqa in his heart. Sahaabah (r) came to Rasoolullah (s) to learn `amilu ‘s-saaliha, the tayyibaat, to learn the sweet things so they could become sweet ones. They learned good actions and noble character.
Nowadays, how do you befriend, O insaan? Do you befriend Awliyaullah? If you don’t befriend Awliyaullah and you befriend shayaateen, you will become like them. You will become from al-kabeethatu li ‘l-kabeetheen. The bad characters, the bad `amal, the bad speech, the bad words will be for the bad ones. That’s why the bad ones speak foul. Every other word is either the F-word or the S-word or whatever, because they are foul ones. The foul in words goes to the bad ones. The good speech goes to the good ones.
Know the clues, O insaan. Don’t befriend bad ones. Befriend good ones. Who are the good ones? Awliyaullah. Find one. Learn from their noble character. Learn from their good deeds. Try to be like them. If they do not give you from their perfume, at least the scent of their perfume will cover you as Rasoolullah (s) has said:
مَثَلُ الجليسِ الصَّالحِ مَثَلُ العطَّارِ إنْ لم يُصِبْك منه أصابك ريحُه ومَثَلُ الجليسِ السَّوءِ مَثَلُ القَيْنِ إنْ لم يُحرِقْك بشَرَرِه علِق بك مِن ريحِه
Al-jaleesu ‘s-saalih mithlu’l-`ataar.
“The good ones that you sit with are like perfumers.” (Ibn Hibban)
Not Yves St. Laurent or Gucci, leave that. No, the good perfumers. If they do not give you their perfume, at least the scent of their perfume will come onto you. Don’t sit with the bad ones. These are the welders. If they don’t burn you by accident or on purpose then you will get the smell of smoke on you. Know who you sit with. Sit with Awliyaullah. Don’t waste your life sitting with investors, realtors, politicians or with things that will not matter in the end.
Be a smart one, O mu’min. A mu’min is an `aqil, uses his or her mind. It tells him or her to follow the best of creation. Awliyaullah are lady saints and men saints. Rabia al-Adawwiya was busy not being distracted from her Eternal Love. She did not want anything else. She did not want the love of anybody else. May Allah (swt) make us on their way, the way to Allah (swt)’s Mahhabba and Ma’rifa. Yuhiboonahum wa yu huboona. Don’t forget. Allah (swt) has servants.
O you who believe! If any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him,- lowly with the believers, mighty against the rejecters, fighting in the way of Allah, and never afraid of the reproaches of such as find fault. That is the grace of Allah, which He will bestow on whom He pleases. And Allah encompasses all, and He knows all things. (Surat al-Ma’idah, 5:54)
Allah (swt) has special servants that He brings. He loves them and they love Him. Be on that way, O insaan.
