Be Humble, Simple and Not Arrogant

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

28 January 2011 Buenos Aires, Argentina

Jumu`ah Khutbah at Al-Ahmad Mosque

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaadah, nawaytu 's-sulook, lillahi ta`ala fee haadha 'l-masjid.

Ati`oollaha wa ati`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (4:59)

O believers, the Prophet (s) ordered us to love Allah, to love each other, to be humble and to be away from arrogance, which is a character of Iblis, whereas humbleness is the character of the Prophet (s).

So that is why the Prophet (s) said in a hadith narrated by Harith (r), “Shall I not inform you of the People of Paradise?” And all the Sahaabah were desiring to hear who are the People of Paradise. And he said, “Every weak submissive person. And do you want me to tell you about the People of Hellfire? They are the ones who are arrogant, ignorant.” And you will find many such people today and unfortunately, some of them are the `ulama of the ummah. (...) If someone is a proud person he will enter the Hellfire.

O `ulama! The Prophet (s) used to do much more worship, service, and submission to Allah (swt) and not to anyone else. Allah (swt) said:

qul in kuntum tuhibboon ’Allaha fa ’ttabi`oonee yuhbibkumullahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w ’Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. ('Ali Imraan, 3:31)

If you want to be in congruence with the Prophet's way, learn and follow his sunnah and his teaching. And that is why he used to say and we should say:

Yaa muqallib al-quloob thabbit qalbee `ala deenik wa yaa musarrif al-quloob sarrif qalbee `ala deenik.

O Controller of Hearts! Make firm my heart in Your faith, in Your worship. O Holder of Hearts, turn my heart to Your obedience!

And none brings good except He, and no one takes sins except He, and no one saves from difficulty except He, where it is said:

وَإِن يَمْسَسْكَ اللّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلاَ كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَإِن يَمْسَسْكَ بِخَيْرٍ فَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدُيرٌ

wa in tamsask’Allahu bi-durrin falaa kaashifa lahu illa huwa wa in yamsaska bi-khayrin fa-huwa `alaa kulli shayin qadeer.

"If Allah touch thee with affliction, none can remove it but He; if He touch thee with happiness, He hath power over all things.

Send salutations on Mustafa (s), upon whom is the excellence of all peace!

O Believers! The Prophet (s) sought safety from the scholars who have no real knowledge, but who pretend to have knowledge in front of other scholars. As narrated by Umm Salama (r), Prophet (s) said:

نعوذ بالله من منافق عليم اللسان جهول القلب

na`oodu billahi min munaafiqin `aleemu ’l-lisaan jahoola ’l-qalb

I seek refuge in Allah from a hypocrite who has an eloquent tongue but an ignorant heart. [Muslim]

The Prophet took refuge in Allah from those who thought they were `ulama but who were ignorant in heart. Qalb, “heart” is mentioned in Holy Qur’an 79 times with 120 ayaah about the heart; fu`aad, “heart” is mentioned 50 times, and sadr, “heart, chest” is mentioned 141 times.

O Servants of Allah! Thus remember Allah as much as you can, and send salutations on your Prophet (s) wherever you are, and fear Allah and His punishment because of your love for dunya!

Abu Rayhan (r ), the Companion of the Holy Prophet (s), said:

The Fire will not see the eye which has cried from fear of Allah, nor the eye which has cried in the Way of Allah, and no drop is more precious than tears from fear of Allah.

Hasan al-Basri (r ) said the Prophet (s) said:

No tear is more precious to Allah except the tear that is shed for the sake of Allah, and the tear of a person which has been shed in the middle of night due to fear of Allah.

O my brothers! You have to stand up in the middle of the night for the sake of love of Allah (swt) and his Prophet (s)!

One night, the Prophet (s) came to Sayyidina `Ali (r) and his wife, Sayyida Fatima (r ) before Fajr, knocked on their door and asked, “Will you not stand up for the night prayers?” Also, Prophet (s) asked his Sahaabah to stand for the night prayer.

`Abdullah ibn Salaam (r ) narrated, the Prophet (s) said: O People! Spread the salaams, and give food, and pray during the night when people are asleep, and you will enter Paradise with peace. (Tirmidhi, Hasan Sahih)

Say salaam to one another; don't be dry to each other, but say, As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, wa salloo bi ’l-layla wa ’n-naasu niyaam tadkhul al-jannata bi ’s-salaam, “After saying salaam, find one who is hungry and poor and give them food, and pray at night when people are sleeping, and you will enter Jannah with peace.”

These words entered the secret and the heart of Holy Qur’an.

ahabbu ’l-kalaam ila-Allahi arba`: subhanallah w ’alhamdulillah wa laa ilaha ill ’Llah w ’Allahu akbar, laa yadurruka bi-ayyihinna badaat.

Samra ibn Judhub (r) narrated, the Prophet (s) said: The most beloved words to Allah are four, and no harm whichever one you begin with: SubhaanAllah w ’alhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illa-Llah w ’Allahu Akbar, (Glory be to God, all praise is to God, there is no God but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest). (Bukhari)

In another hadeeth:

afdala’l-kalaam b`ad al-quran arba` wa hunna: subhaanAllah w ’alhamdulillah wa laa ilaha ill-Llah w’Allahu Akbar.

Glory be to God, all praise is to God, there is no God but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

There are four best words after Holy Qur'an: SubhaanAllah w ’alhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illa-Llah w ’Allahu Akbar. Glory be to Allah Most High, Who is above what they ascribe to Him.

Aqoolu qawlee hadha wa astaghfirullaha ’l-`Azheem lee wa lakum wa li-saairi ’l-mustaghfireen fa yaa fawzan li ’l-mustaghfireen, astaghfirullah.

I ask Allah's forgiveness for you and me and for all those who ask for forgiveness, and it is a victory for those who ask for forgiveness, astaghfirullah.

Alhamdulillah hamdan kaamileen wa salaatu was salaamu `ala Nabiyeena Muhammadan wa `ala aalihi wa saahbihi ajma`een. Tazeeman lin-nabiyihee wa takreeman li fakhamatihi shani saffiyihee fa qala Allahu `Azza wa Jal min qailin mukhbirin wa aamira inna-Llaha wa malaa'ikatahu yusalloona `ala 'n-nabi, yaa ayyuhal-ladheena aamanoo salloo `alayhi was sallimoo tasleema.

Exalting the status of our Prophet, enobling his extreme greatness, Allah (swt) said:

Truly Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet (s). O you who believe, send blessing on the Prophet and greetings of peace. (al-Ahzaab, 33:56)
