Eid al-Adha Khutbah

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah w 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa Lillaahi ‘l-Hamd.

O believers, O mu’mins! It’s a blessed day today. Why are you celebrating? You’re celebrating because our brothers and sisters who have gone for Hajj, Allah (swt) has promised them Jannah. Rasoolullah (s) told us that in his Hadith and it is mentioned in Bukhari and Muslim.

Al-‘Umratu ila al-‘Umrati kaffaaratun lima baynahuma. One Umrah to the next forgives the sins. All the sins are forgiven.

Wal-Hajju al-mabrooru laysa lahu jazaa’un illa al-Jannah. And the accepted Hajj, the correctly done Hajj, the sincere Hajj has no other reward than Paradise. Rasoolullah (s) has given the glad tidings to the pilgrims who have performed the Hajj.

We went once. Others went twice. Others went three or four times. Every time they go, that Hadith is valid. It is ongoing. If you go to Hajj, Allah (swt) is promising Jannah for you, O Hajji. That is why we celebrate. And we say, yaa Rabbee, as You have bestowed on them that glad tidings of being from ahlu ‘l-Jannah, allow us to be with them. We are together with them. We believe what they believe. We practice what they practice. Those who were blessed enough to be on that mountain, blessed enough to be in these holy lands, to be in the proximity of Rasoolullah (s), his Companions, Ahlu ‘l-Bayt, Awliya, Anbiya, Asfiya, to be in the proximity of Ka`bah, in the proximity of Rawdah, these are the blessed ones. Yaa Rabbee, as You have bestowed on them from Your endless favors, we are asking also to get some of that. We pray with them, we celebrate today with them, hoping to attract Allah (swt)’s Mercy to ourselves.

Rasoolullah (s) went to Jannah. Your Prophet has seen Jannah. Your Prophet has entered Jannah while in dunya. He did not have to die to go to Jannah to see what Jannah is as we believe Rasoolullah (s) was taken to Jannah and it is narrated in the books of our `ulama, of our Awliya. They said Rasoolullah (s) entered Jannah and he saw Ridwan, khazinu ‘l-Jannah, the guardian of Paradise. When that great angel saw Rasoolullah (s), he rejoiced. Fariha bihi wa raha bihi. He rejoiced at him. He welcomed him and he admitted him to Paradise. He showed him the wonders that Allah (swt) has prepared for His pious servants.

Rasoolullah (s) said, “I have seen wonders, lima la ʿaynun ra'at wa la udhunun samiʿat, no eye has seen, no ear has heard.” He said, “I saw the springs, the rivers, the palaces of the pious ones, the righteous ones” and this is the beauty of Rasoolullah’s (s) words and his glad tidings. He said, “I heard a noise. That noise was saying, Aamanna bi-Rabbi al-`Alameen, ‘We believe in the Lord of All Worlds.’” He asked, “Yaa Ridwan. Whose voice is this?” He said, “Saharatu Fira`un, ‘The magicians of Firaun.’” Allah (swt) admitted them to Jannah.

Amanna bi-Rabbi al-`Alameen. Iman. Once you say, Aamanna bi-Rabbi al-`Alameen, you are from them. Once you accept the Lord of All Worlds, the Lord of everything that exists and doesn’t exist, if you accept the Lord as the magicians of Firaun accepted the Lord of All Worlds and were admitted to Jannah, that is step one.

If you want to be in Jannah, O man, O woman, O big one or little one, young, old, whatever, the first step is to say, Aamanna bi-Rabbi al-`Alameen. I accept and I acknowledge the existence of the Creator Who created everything, Who has all the Power and Might. He moves you as He likes. Don’t think people move as they like. Excel, go above that understanding. He moves everyone as He likes. He uses some in good work and He uses some in bad work. It is up to Allah (swt).

They said, Amanna bi-Rabbi al-`Alameen. The magicians of Firaun are in Jannah. Firaun is on the other side. May Allah (swt) forgive us. He (s) continued. He heard another voice in Jannah and he said, “Yaa Ridwan. I am hearing a voice, Labbayka Allahumma labbayk. Whose voice is this?”

“Arwaahu ‘l-Hujjaaj, the souls of the pilgrims, those who were granted Jannah, those who were promised Jannah.”

Allah (swt) allowed Rasoolullah (s) to hear their voices in Jannah because Allah (swt) promised them Jannah. Rasoolullah (s) heard the voices of the magicians of Firaun because Allah (swt) admitted them there. The text continues. Wa samiʿatu 't-takbeer qalallahu illahi ‘l-ghuzat. He said, “These are the warriors who strive in Allah (swt)’s cause.”

Step one, iman. Step two, labbayk. Do you say, “Labbayk” to Allah (swt)? What does “Labbayk” mean? Yaa Rabbee. I am at Your service. I will do what You ordered. I will leave what You have forbidden. Where are we from that? We choose what we want to obey. We leave out what we don’t want to obey. That is our weakness. May Allah (swt) forgive us.

Step three, ghuzat. You have to be from the warriors who strive in the cause of Allah (swt). Who are you combating? Your own self. These are the spiritual meanings. Of course ghuzaat are in Jannah but it also has a spiritual meaning. You have to struggle. You have to fight against the whispers of Shaytan, against the desires of the ego, against the distractions and pleasures of this dunya. That is the inward meaning of the Hadith of Rasoolullah (s).

Wa samiʿtu at-tasbeeḥ. “I also heard tasbeeh, glorification of Allah (swt). Who are these?”

Ha’ula’i al-Anbiya. “These are the prophets.”

The prophets are making tasbeeh. It is said that Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) told Rasoolullah (s), Inna al-Jannata ṭayyibat at-turbah, “Paradise has sweet soil,” ʿadhbat al-maa, “Fresh water.” Ghiraasuhaa, “The seeds of that pure soil is subhaanAllah wa ‘l-hamdulillah wa Laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ‘l-Llahu Akbar. Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) said, convey my salams to your Ummah and tell them that Jannah has pure sweet soil and it has fresh, sweet water and the seeds of that soil is subhaanAllah wa ‘l-hamdulillah wa Laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ‘l-Llahu Akbar.”

It has pleasant soil but no one is planting. Are we planting? Are we reciting this as advised by Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) to the Ummah of Rasoolullah (s)? Are we busy with saying, subhaanAllah wa ‘l-hamdulillah wa Laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ‘l-Llahu Akbar? We forget. The earth over there is pure but no one is planting. Blessed are those who are busy with these words. Be busy with these words. Leave everything else. It has no value, no sense. Everything stays here and you move on. Move onto where? To the orchards that you have planted, to the sweet soil and the sweet rivers you have been granted and that happens with, subhaanAllah wa ‘l-hamdulillah wa Laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ‘l-Llahu Akbar.

We forget. SubhaanAllah, in takbeeratu ‘l-`Eid, we are saying, subhaanAllah, when we say, subhaanAllah bukratan wa aseela. We are saying, wa lillahi ‘l-hamd, when we are saying, alhamdulillah. And we are saying Allahu Akbar and Laa ilaaha illa-Llah. `Ulama, Awliya have combined the seeds of the trees of Jannah for you. You recite it before `Eid, you recite it at home, you recite it whenever you want and these are being planted for you over there. Be busy with dhikrullah and see what Rasoolullah (s) has seen. Be admitted to the place he was admitted to. That place has everything you need and everything you have not dreamt of yet. May Allah (swt) forgive all of us.

Blessed is the one who is busy with these words, subhaanAllah wa ‘l-hamdulillah wa Laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ‘l-Llahu Akbar.

Wa Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem.
