Accuse Your Ego of Hypocrisy

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

27 November 2014 Fenton, Michigan

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Allah Granted to Every Nation According to Their Prophets

Alhamdulillah that Allah (swt) made us Muslims and granted us from His Endless Mercy, Rahmah, and He granted us from His Endless Honor and Rahmah because that rahmah that He dressed us with as Muslims, He did not dress others and what He gave us He did not give others. To everyone Allah gave according to their prophets, so we have been given according to Sayyidina Muhammad (s). He is the Prophet and Messenger of Allah (swt), who said:

كنت نبي و ادم بين الماء و الطين

Kuntu Nabiyyin wa adamu bayna 'l-maa'i wa 't-teen.

I was a prophet when Adam was between water and clay.

And in another narration:

كنت نبيا وآدم بين الروح والجسد

Kuntu nabiyyan wa adam bayna ar-roohi wa ’l-jasad.

I was a prophet while Adam was between soul and body.

And He said:

When Jaabir (r) asked, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Prophet of Allah! What is the first thing that Allah (swt) created?” the Prophet (s) said, “The first thing that Allah (swt) created is the Light of your Prophet from His Light, O Jaabir.” (Musannaf `Abdu ’r-Razzaq)

“What Allah has created first is the light of your Prophet, yaa Jaabir.” Allah gave us a chance in this life to do what? What has Allah (swt) has honored Sayyidina Muhammad (s) with? To go higher and higher in Mi`raaj from one Paradise to another, and that is why Allah wants from Ummat an-Nabi (s) to rise up from one level to higher levels, from normal levels to higher levels, and today, everyone likes to reach higher levels in everything. Sayyidina Adam (a) wanted to rise to the highest level by eating from the Forbidden Tree and he thought it was correct, but what was waiting for him? The evil power was waiting for him: Iblees was waiting and told him, “If you eat from this tree you will be Eternal.” So what he wanted? The highest! He ate and he fell down, but Allah (swt) forgave him.

The Two Groups of Worshippers

We, as Allah (swt)'s servants, Allah made Muslims in two groups: `aabid, the worshipper, and al-`abd, the real servant. There is a big difference between `aabid and `abd. The `aabid is the one going on the way of servanthood and he did not yet reach the level of servanthood; he is praying and fasting, he is on that highway, one time falling down and one time not falling down; he is still going.

The `abd is the one who passed that, he is still in the dunya but he left the dunya pleasures and is running after Akhirah pleasures and when he gets it, he becomes `abd. Al-`aabid is the one still going. For example, in university you study and get a Bachelor’s degree they tell say you must shoot higher for a Master’s degree, and then you study for a PhD and there is nothing higher. That route is al-`aabid: he has to go through life with ups and downs, but when he becomes `abd:

قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيّ وَجَعَلَنِي مُبَارَكًاا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَانِي بِالصَّلَاةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا

He said, “Behold, I am a servant of God. He has vouchsafed for me Revelation and made me a prophet, and He has made me blessed wherever I am, and has enjoined on me prayer and charity as long as I live.” (Surat al-Maryam, 19:30-31)

In Holy Qur’an, Sayyidina `Isa (a) said, “I am Allah's servant,” he did not say, “I am Allah's worshipper.” He is still worshipping, but he reached the Reality of `Uboodiyyah, the Station of Ultimate Servanthood. Sayyidina `Isa (a) said about himself, innee `abdullahi, ‘I am Allah’s servant’, and what did Allah (swt) say about the Prophet (s)?

Subhaan-alladhee asraa bi `abdihi laylan.

Glory be to He Who transported His servant by night. (Surat al-Israa’, 17:1)

Allah is saying, “He is My `abd,” He stamped that Sayyidina Muhammad (s) is ‘His servant’. Also, Sayyidina Musa (a) and Sayyidina Khidr (a), one is a prophet and one is Allah's servant, and both are `abd, as Allah mentioned:

فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا

So they found one of Our Servants on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our Own Presence. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:65)

What happened when he reached the Level of Servanthood? Allah granted him mercy, fawajada `abdan min `ibaadina aataynaahu rahmatan min `indina. All of us are going on that highway to reach in dunya, and we say, “Yaa Rabbee! We are weak servants and we are asking you, Yaa Rabbuna, grant us to reach the Station of `Uboodiyyah, true servanthood, in dunya,” because when you become `abd then you will be dressed. When you are a professor, what do they dress you with? Universities don't let professors take their degrees without wearing a robe and hat. Why Muslims are not putting a hat all their life? Do women only have to put hijab? No, men must also put, not only women, both must cover! But now if you cover your head they think you are crazy. When you become a professor what happens? They dress you with a dress and if that is for dunya, and when you become `abd, reaching real `Uboodiyyah, Allah dresses you with His mercy from Heavens!

Your Lord will shower His mercies on you and dispose of your affair towards comfort and ease.

(Surat al-Kahf, 18:16)

Allah (swt) will arrange for you something from His rahmah and you can find the way. So He dressed

Sayyidina Khidr (a) with that rahmah, which is Sayyidina Muhammad, the Prophet (s); it means he reached to see the Prophet (s) in dunya in a physical way, in a physical level. Sayyidina Khidr (a) was able to know about Sayyidina Muhammad (s) before when the Prophet (s) was still a soul, a Light in Bahr al-Qudrah! Allah (swt) dressed Sayyidina Khidr (a) from that secret and that is why Allah sent Sayyidina Musa (a) to him, after Sayyidina Musa (a) gave naseeha, an advice to his people.

They liked it so much that one of Bani Isra`eel came to him and said, “Yaa Musa, your speech was good.”

Sayyidina Musa (a) said, “Is there anyone higher than me in giving speeches?” He became proud of it and Allah (swt) made him to go search for Sayyidina Khidr (a) and He said, “No, your speech is not like Sayyidina Khidr’s.”

The Heavenly Powers of Prophets and Saints

No one can ask Allah (swt) about Prophets and Awliya, as only Allah (swt) knows them and dressed Anbiya and Awliyaullah with everything! Don't try to analyze this and say they have no power; no, they have all the power and they can flip everything upside down! They are not like us. When Allah dresses you with `Uboodiyyah, it means you have reached the Reality, and that now you know yourself.

Man `arafa nafsahu faqad `arafa rabbah.

Who knows his self knows his Lord.

Then you know not about Allah (swt), but you know from the Divine Presence what Allah opens, what He wants you to know. Alhamdulillah that Allah made us from Ummat an-Nabi (s), because that is sharaf, honor we are dressed with by Allah and that is why He said:

وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ وَحَمَلْنَاهُمْ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَاهُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ عَلَى كَثِيرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلاً

We have honored the sons of Adam, provided them with transport on land and sea, given them for sustenance things good and pure, and conferred on them special favors above a great part of Our Creation. (Surat al-’Israa, 17:70)

Because of the honor that Allah (swt) gave to the Prophet (s), He honored all human beings.

You are the best of Nations evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)

“You are the best of Nations sent to humanity because you order the good and forbid the wrong.”

I was reading from Grandshaykh `AbdAllah’s notes written by Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q), and when you read one line it is like an ocean!

The Power of Obedience and the Circles of Dhikrullah

Grandshaykh (q) said, “Ita`at can erase ma`siyya, obedience can waive sins.” When you obey Allah (swt) you are carrying on your shoulders the dress of hasanaat:

مَن جَاء بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا وَمَن جَاء بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلاَ يُجْزَى إِلاَّ مِثْلَهَا وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ

Whoever comes (before Allah) with a good deed will gain ten times as much to his credit, but whoever comes with an evil deed will only be recompensed according to his evil and none shall be wronged.

(Surat al-An`am, 6:160)

Anyone who does one good deed, a hasanat, Allah (swt) gives him the reward of having done ten, and when Allah gives it is not like he only did the one hasanat, but Allah also gives with no account! That is why Prophet (s) said when you sit in an association of ita`at, obedience, like you are now sitting in this majlis, this association is a majlis of hasanaat, you are doing something good:

هم الجلساء لا يشقى بهم جليسهم

I also grant him pardon, because they are the people by virtue of whom their associates will not be unfortunate. (Narrated Abu Hurairah, Bukhari and Muslim)

“The one who sits with those people who are good,” like these people or like any circle of dhikrullah around the world is with good people, yadhkaroonullah doing dhikrullah, Hum al-qawm laa yashqaa bihim jaleesahum, “They are the people whom you like to be with,” Muslims, and for those people who are obedient, for that itaa`a, Allah (swt) erases the sins of all the others. So ita`at is like a dragon that swallows all the sins. If you need to clean something, what do you use? You put sand and rub it, sometimes you need to put sand on it to make it pure in order to pray on that rug. Tayyamum is with what? Sand or soil. So hasanaat is like a dragon, eating everything in that association of dhikrullah, of ita`at, and anyone carrying anything bad, Allah (swt) will take it away. So it is good to go and sit with circles of dhikrullah to get that barakah, that dressing.

The Most Dangerous Sin that Leads to Nifaaq

And the most dangerous sin is someone to think he is a wali (when he does not have the requisite ijaazah) and he begins to give orders right and left, because he cannot control himself or herself, and thinks he is `azhamah, that he carries the dress of greatness. Al-ghuroor, pride will fill him up and make him think, “You are `azheema Kisra, like the great emperor Chosroes, King of Persia, that no one can speak with!”

People are like that today and you cannot speak with them as they think they are superior to you, but Prophet (s) said:

بين عربي ولا اعجمي الا بالتقوى

There is no difference between Arabs and non-Arabs (one race and another) except in piety.

(Musnad Ahmad)

Don't wear the dress of pride or arrogance because it will take you directly to nifaaq and then you will become a munaafiq and you won't say anything correct. So we have to be very careful not to go on the way of nifaaq. And what are its signs?

The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, and when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is charged with a trust, he deceives. (Bukhari)

Whatever he or she says is completely a lie. Prophet (s) said this is the first sign of the hypocrite, and even he knows he is a munaafiq but still he wants to show that he is correct. So Prophet (s) said that is a sign of a corrupted one. Now in technology, you say the computer or email is corrupted and what do you have to do? You have to reformat it. So, O Munaafiq! If you see you are falling into that trap of nifaaq, reboot yourself, go back and make istighfaar.

We have to be sure we are not falling into the trap of Shaytan, nifaaq, and that we are not speaking bad about others with nifaaq. If you speak you lie and if you are Muslim and Mu’min and you know the Prophet (s) prohibited nifaaq and you are still making nifaaq, then your sins are doubled! So we have to be aware of that to not to fall into it.

Wa idhaa wa`ada akhlafa, “And if he or she promises,” or the community promises, or the country promises, you have to keep it and not change it and not betray your promise. When you promised it is valuable, because people accept what that president or country or that group says, and when they see you betrayed your promise, that is a sign of nifaaq.

And then third one: wa idhaa 'tumina khaan. If you have been entrusted but you betray your trust and those who trusted you. Today there is too much of that around the world: even a brother betrays his sister and sister betrays her sister, and brother betrays brother, and father betrays sons and daughters, and especially the wife also! [Laughter.] You? [Mawlana instructs a mureed.] Keep quiet! [Laughter.] He...Allah (swt) loves him, because he never lost hope of getting work and kept making du`a to get work, and he got work paying more than what he asked. And the Prophet (s) loves him and Awliyaullah love him, because he never changed. Since 1985 I know him, and still he thinks himself young! [Laughter.]

The Munaafiq Focuses on the Faults of Others

So wa idhaa ‘tumina khaan, If you trust him he betrays you. Idhaa haddatha kadhab, wa idhaa wa`ada akhlaf, wa idhaa ‘tumina khaan. Three characteristics that all of us thought about someone else, or some other group, or some other people, but it is your ego: your desires, you are dressing in that nifaaq, so don't look at others, look at yourself! The munaafiq is the one who looks at others.

In you there is nifaaq, as the ego is always munaafiq, on nifaaq. The ego tells you something when you are praying and it is lying, so as soon as you say “Allahu Akbar” you don’t know what you are praying, your ego is there trying to divert you through lies in your mind. Why these lies only come in prayer, not outside the prayer? Wa idhaa wa`ada akhlaf, and when you push your ego down and it promises, “Okay, okay, I won’t do that anymore”, and after one hour `Asr prayer comes and it betrays its trust and you miss the prayer! Wa idhaa ‘tumina khaan, if you trust your ego it will throw you into disasters and betray you completely!

Don't think too much, “Oh! To whom Shaykh is speaking?” No! It’s to myself, to my ego, I have this problem. He also has this problem, and he has this problem, especially this one [laughter], and every one of us has this problem, so we have to be careful and understand that `Uboodiyyah is to clean yourself through worshipness, to reach the Divine Presence, to become an `abd. You are now a slave or we can say “servant”, but we are not perfect and no one is perfect, although there are some people who think they are perfect, but unfortunately they are not. Those who are on the Way of Perfection are Awliyaullah, and Allah (swt) is supporting them because they have been chosen to guide the Ummah.

Heavenly Knowledge Will Vanish

Today people are running after `ilm and the Prophet (s) said:

وأخرج أحمد والبخاري ومسلم وابن ماجة عن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه: سمعت رسول الله يقول: يكون بين يدي الساعة أيام فيرفع فيها العلم وينزل فيها الجهل ويكثر فيها الهرج

Among the signs of the Last Days there will be days when too much ignorance will come to the hearts of people and knowledge will be lifted up and in those days there will be too much fear and too much killing. (Abdullah ibn Mas`ood, Bukhari and Muslim)

Today if we look on Earth, we will typically see what the Prophet (s) predicted of the Signs of Last Days, Armageddon, the Signs that Prophet (s) mentioned appear, and in that hadith of Sayyidina `Umar (r) yurfa`u ’l-`ilm, “the knowledge will be lifted up”; there is no more `ilm today.

Ibn `Ajeeba mentioned `ilm in two different ways: one is `Ilm al-Awraaq, the Knowledge of Papers, and the other is `Ilm al-Adhwaaq, the Knowledge of Taste. So all of us today are not finding Knowledge of Taste or its teachers as this topic is not existing anymore, even though this is the first topic to come in Islam, Maqaam al-Ihsaan. Today everyone is focusing on `Ilm al-Awraaq, the Knowledge of Papers, al-Imaan, which is good, but they aren’t focusing on `Ilm al-Adhwaaq as you cannot find teachers of the Knowledge of Taste.

When the Prophet (s) said yurfa` feeha al-`ilm, the Sahaabah (r) asked the Prophet (s), “Will Holy Qur'an be lifted up?” and the Prophet (s) said, “No, but sincere, pious people will die and there will be no replacement.”

Prophet (s) said, “In the Last Days knowledge will be lifted up." And they (Sahaabah) said, “Will Qur’an be lifted up?” He (s) said, “No, but those who understand the Qur’an well will be removed.”

Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but rather He takes away knowledge when the scholars die, such that He leaves no scholar behind and the people turn to the ignorant as their leaders. They are asked to give religious judgments without knowledge, thus they are led astray and lead others astray.” (Narrated `Abdullah bin Amr bin `As, Muslim and Bukhari)

After the pious ones die hey will follow the ignorant ones who deviate and make others deviate with them; they lose their way and those who follow lose their way. Today very rarely you can find real `ulama; look at the[widespread ignorance on the] Internet and you see the real scholars are disappearing one after one with no replacement. We have to look for them, if we can still find `ulama who are living the `Ilm al-Adhwaaq, the Knowledge of Taste.

Secrets of ‘Worship Him as if you see Him’ and ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llah’

What is “taste”? It means you feel the pleasure, the ecstasy, the heavenly energy and power of it:

أن تعبد الله كأنك تراه ، فإن لم تكن تراه ، فإنه يراك.

That you worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you don't see Him then truly He sees you.

(Sayyidina `Umar, Muslim, Bukhari)

Allahu Akbar! That means there is a secret behind that, as the Prophet (s) said to ‘worship as if you see Him’. There is the possibility of seeing Allah (swt), not in dunya but in Akhirah. Allah (swt) will put something in front of you, He will dress you and make you feel that you have to worship in better way, so that even if you don't see Him, He sees you. You feel raasha, shivering. If you do your awraad with a white sheet covering you and put the light off and say "Laa ilaaha illa-Llah" you will feel that shivering, but you have to really focus on it, reflect when you say "Laa ilaaha illa-Llah" as that is like a sword on your ego each time you say, “There is no Creator except Allah!” If you meditate like that you will feel that shivering, but we are weak servants and we don’t do it.

That is why Shaykh Sharafuddin (q) said to Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, “Yaa waladee! I have been ordered to deliver to you the ijaazah, khilafah, to be my successor.”

Grandshaykh (q) said, “I don't want it.”

Now if you think about successorship, everyone wants it!

Shaykh Sharafuddin (q) said, “This is by order of the Prophet (s) that I am appointing you,” meaning, “It is not by my order, but it is by order of the Prophet (s).”

Grandshaykh (q) said, “I cannot, unless you give me what is in my heart, then it is okay.”

Shaykh Sharafuddin (q) said, “I will check istikhaara in Diwan al-Awliya, the majlis of the Prophet (s).”

So in vision he asked the Prophet (s), “My son, `AbdAllah Effendi, said ‘I cannot’.”

The Prophet (s) said, “Ask him why.”

So Shaykh Sharafuddin (q) asked him the next day, saying, “The Prophet (s) is asking, why are you not accepting?”

Grandshaykh (q) said, “Because from you all the way to Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r), what have you done for mureeds except teaching and asking Allah to make them healthy and to be in Paradise? But I want something different, that anyone that comes and sits with me even for five minutes in an association, I want to raise that association and that person who came, even if he has nothing to do with me, to raise them all to my level, wherever I am standing at that moment. If you give me that I accept, because I know all mureeds are lazy and they are not going to do anything, so I am carrying them and I don't want to carry them for nothing, I want to present them to the Prophet (s) clean in my level. If I have a level and I have that honor, sharaf from you, then I want them to be in that level. If you give them that level, then I accept.”

Then Shaykh Sharafuddin (q) made another istikhara, as Awliyaullah ask the Prophet (s) and he responds, he is Haadir wa Naazhir! Prophet (s) said:

I observe the `amal of my ummah. If I find good I thank Allah, and if I see other than that, bad, I ask forgiveness for you. (al-Bazzaar in his Musnad)

Prophet (s) is there. Call him from here, say now, “Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah! Yaa Shafi`ee al-Mudhnibeen! Adriknaa yaa Rasoolullah, reach us, O Prophet of Allah! Yaa Rahmatan li ‘l-`Alameen! Adriknaa yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasooullah, bi laa nazharin ila `amalinaa, yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah!” Do you think he did not hear you? Sometimes he is present here, sometimes he is looking, he is giving the power. Allahumma salli `alayka yaa Rasoolullah, yaa Shafi`ee al-Mudhnibeen!

So Grandshaykh said, “If you give me that, I accept it.” Check here how many do their awrad daily; 2, 5, 10, 15? We are lazy.

Great-Grandshaykh Sharafuddin (q) made istikhaara and he saw the Prophet (s) again, and he asked the Prophet (s) that question.

Prophet (s) said, anaa radiyy, anaa radiyy anaa radiyy, “I am pleased with that and accept.”

Grandshaykh (q) said, “Now I am accepting. Every majlis that they are sitting with me, I am raising them.”

In the Day of Judgement they appear as if they have worshipped to reach these levels, but it is with the boost or the rocket of the shaykh that moved them up. That is through permission, and without permission there is nothing. Sayyidina Shaykh Sharafuddin did not give permission, but with Prophet's permission that was granted, and without Prophet (s)’s permission you cannot get anything.

And we are asking, “Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah adriknaa yaa Rasoolullah bi jaahi awliyaullah `azza wa jall, wa bi jaahi anbiyaa Allah `azza wa jall, bi jaahika yaa rasoolullah. Yaa Rabbee taqabal minna, yaa Rabbee taqabal minna wa `afuw `anna wv’aghfir lana wv’arhamna bi maa qasarna, w ’aktubna yaa Rabbee yaa Allah mina ‘l-mu’mineen mina ‘l-muslimeen mina ‘s-saaliheen mina ‘l-`abideen innaka `alaa kulli shayin qadeer wa bi ’l-ijaabai jadeer. Rabbana taqabal minna bihurmatii maa anzalta `alayhi sirri surat al-Fatihah.

Nahnu muqassireen. O Sayyidee, O Rasoolullah! Reach us! Ya Allah! We are failing, so for the sake of the Prophet (s) save us!

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.

This is general advice, not directed specifically at anyone, but it is for us all to be in the right direction and to be following on the footsteps of our shaykh, Sultan al-Awliya Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil and on the footsteps of Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa'iz ad-Daghestani (q).

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
