Suhbah after Fajr at Jamia Gausia Masjid
As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatahu, yarhamakumullaah, raheemakumullaah.
I think Ummah TV didn’t record yesterday’s suhbah on dhikrullah, so I will touch on it today from different angles and with different ahadith. There are over fifty aayaat in Holy Qur’an about dhikrullah, there are around 104 aayaat about the heart and 20-27 about the chest, sadr, and all these relate to the place:
ما وسعني أرضي ولا سمائي ولكن وسعني قلب عبدي المؤمن
Maa wasi`anee ardee wa laa samaa'ee wa laakin wasi`anee qalbi `abdee al-mu'min.
Neither My Heavens nor My Earth contain Me, but the heart of My Believing Servant contains Me.
(Hadith Qudsi, Al-Ihya of Imam al-Ghazali)
So that focus on the heart and dhikrullah is our topic, to explain how in Islam it is allowed to do as much dhikr as you like and there is no limit, as your heart is already doing dhikrullah. Through the stethoscope you hear the heartbeat saying, Hu, Hu, Hu, “The Unknown.” Qul huwa, “Say, yaa Muhammad, ‘Allahu Ahad.’” That “Hu” that no one knows is Allah (swt). Allah is kuntu kanzan makhfiyyan:
كنت كنزا مخفياً فأحببت أن أعرف فخلقت الخلق
Kuntu kanzan makhfiyyan fa ahbabtuhu an u`rafa fa khalaqtu ‘l-khalq.
I was a Hidden Treasure (and) I wanted to be known, so I created Creation. (Hadith Qudsi)
Allah created the creation and gave the responsibility to Prophet (s), and in Bukhari and Muslim it is a sahih hadith:
Rasoolullahi (s) qaal: Alaa unabbiukum bi khayri `amaalikum wa azkaahaa `inda maleekikum wa arfa`ihaa fee darajaatikum wa khayrun lakum min infaaq adh-dhahabi wa ‘l-wariq, wa khayrun lakum min an talqaw `aduwwakum fa-tadriboo a`naaquhum wa yadriboo a`naaqakum. Qaaloo balaa, qaala dhikrullaahi ta`ala.
Shall I not inform you the best and the purest of your deed in the sight of your Master, which is the highest in your degrees, is superior to your spending gold and silver in charity, and is better than confronting and fighting against your enemy, cutting one another’s necks?” The Companions submitted, “Yes, indeed!” He said, “It is remembering Allah.” (Tirmidhi, Ahmad)
Prophet is saying, what does he loves to eat most? In seclusion, when the order comes they tell you to eat two bowls of lentil soup this big in 24 hours. Many times I entered, and most of the time I couldn't even finish half a bowl, as there was no craving to eat because there you are involved with dhikrullah, which is as the `ulama describe it, kuntum quloob, “food for hearts.” So Prophet said, “Do you want me to tell you the best `amal that Allah accepts?” Alaa unabbiukum bi khayri `amaalikum wa azkaahaa `inda maleekikum wa arfa`ihaa fee darajaatikum wa khayrun lakum min infaaq adh-dhahabi wa ‘l-wariq, “and it will raise you higher and higher in levels and it is better for you than collecting and spending gold and silver.”
Today people run after gold and silver, but Prophet (s) said, “It is better than gold and silver,” wa khayrun lakum min an talqaw `aduwwakum fa-tadriboo a`naaquhum wa yadriboo a`naaqakum. “And it is even better than going for jihad, better than going after your enemy and fighting, qaaloo Balaa, yaa Rasoolullah! “Yes, yaa Sayyidi, yaa Rasoolullah! Tell us and we will do that!” Qaala dhikrullah, Allah’s dhikr, udhkur Allah hatta yaqoolu annaka majnoon, “Remember and mention Allah in your life until you reach a level that people say you are crazy, then all the veils will open.” It is a hadith of Prophet (s), “Remember Him until people look at you and say, ‘He is crazy.’” Crazy in the love of Allah, yes. It is a hadith of Prophet (s), and there are so many aayaat:
Udhkur Allah dhikran katheera, fadhkuroonee adhkurkum.
Fadhkuroonee adhkurkum, washkuroo lee wa laa takfuroon.
Remember Me, I will remember you. Give thanks to Me and do not be ungrateful towards Me.
(Surat al-Baqarah, 2:152)
Alladheena amanoo wa tatma’innu quloobuhum bi-dhikrillaahi alaa bi dhikrillah tatma’innu ‘l-quloob.
Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah. for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction. (Surat ar-Ra`d, 13:28)
W ’adhkurullah katheeran la`lakum tuflihoon.
Call Allah in remembrance much (and often) that you may prosper. (Surat al-Anfal, 8:45)
Wa ’dh-dhaakireen ’Llah katheerana wa ’dh-dhaakiraat.
And for men and women who engage much in Allah's praise. (Surat al-Ahzab, 33:35)
It never ends! We just recited in the Fajr prayer:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا
Yaa ayyuha ’Lladheena amanoo udhkurullah dhikran katheera wa sabihoohu bukratan wa aseela.
O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance and glorify Him early and late.
(Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:41,42)
He didn’t give you any time to stop dhikr, but do it continuously! He is saying udhkurullah dhikran katheera, “Mention and remember Allah often, so much!” Don’t only say, “I am going to do a 1,000, or 500, or 2,000 or 3,000,” do as much as you like! Wa sabihoohu bukratan wa aseela, beside dhikrullah he said, “Praise Him! Glorify Him! Thank Him!” bukratan wa aseelan, “in the morning when you are going out to work and when you come back home” make tasbeeh, glorify Allah, and make dhikrullah in your home, between you and Allah (swt). When you go out praise Him, as that takes you out and brings you home again safe from Shaytan, because out in the world there are too many shaytans. And He said, Bukratan wa aseelan, “Morning and evening, when you are returning.”
Ibn Habban (r) mentioned in his Sahih, wa Imam Ahmad wa Abu Ya`laa wa ’l-Haakim, they mentioned, that the Prophet (s) said:
عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "أكثروا ذكر الله حتى يقولوا: مجنون
Akthiru min dhikrillah hatta yaquloo majnoon!
Mention too much dhikrullah until you are called ‘crazy.’
Remember Allah until you get a certification from a mental hospital that you are crazy! When you get that certificate, at that moment you know Allah (swt) accepted you. It is not a certificate from people’s mental houses, but you get a heavenly certificate that states:
أنا جليس من ذكرني
Anaa jaleesu man dhakarani.
I am with the one who is mentioning Me.
So dhikrullah is better than the gold and silver everyone is collecting. Every `amal of Bani Adam stops, except one! Everything you do in dunya stops at your death and one doesn’t stop: if you are doing dhikrullah in dunya you are doing dhikrullah in Akhirah. You are not doing the five prayers in Akhirah, they stop; also fasting is not an obligation in Akhirah, only in dunya; Hajj you must do in dunya, not in Akhirah; charity you must give in dunya, but dhikrullah continues in Akhirah. So every `amal stops except dhikrullah, which is like water.
An example of dhikrullah is the story of Sayyidina al-Khidr (a) and Iskander, Dhul Qarnayn, mentioned in Surat al-Kahf. They were both running to be the first one to find the Fountain of Youth, Maau ’l-Hayyaat, the Water of Life, which is a heavenly water from Allah, and Sayyidina al-Khidr (a) found it first, then Allah (sw) opened all these knowledges for him.
Dhikrullah is Maau ’l-Hayyaat! What did he find there? He wasn’t looking for water, he was looking for Maa` ul-Hayyaat, which is dhikrullah. He found dhikrullah is the way to take him to heavenly knowledge, so he ran for it. So dhikrullah is like water, and which is stronger, water or fire? Water is stronger than fire and dhikrullah is water that extinguishes the fire of Iblees. All bad `amal are sins coming from Iblees who is created from fire:
قَالَ أَنَاْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ
Khalaqtanee man naar wa khalaqtahu min teen.
I am better than him as You created me from fire and You created him from mud!
(Surat al-`Araaf, 7:12)
Fire is not better than water. Ninety percent or more of the human body, as doctors tell us, consists of water. Ninety-seven percent of the human body is not yet discovered; presently science only knows three percent. That tarqeeb, He gave us the power of dhikrullah with that form; dhikrullah burns fire! Water extinguishes fire, that’s why dhikrullah is not limited to certain times like the five prayers, it is open at any time of day or night:
الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىَ جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَذا بَاطِلاً سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Alladheena yadhkuroonullaaha qiyamaan wa qu`oodan wa `alaa junoobihim wa yattafakkaroona fee khalqi 's-samawaati wa 'l-ardi rabbanaa maa khalaqta hadhaa baatilan subhaanaka fa qinaa `adhaaba 'n-naar.
Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the Creation of the Heavens and the Earth, (saying) "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose! Glory to You! Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire." (Surat Aali `Imraan, 3:191)
“Those who remember Allah and mention Him any time, day or night, standing or sitting.” In this case the ayah indicates anytime, whatever you are doing, standing, sitting, laying down sleeping, you can do dhikrullah, but not your prayers. And Prophet said, mentioning from his Lord, “If My Servant is busy and all his concern is Me, I will make all his concern and pleasure come from dhikrullah, and if I make his concern to make dhikrullah, I will love him and he loves Me, and when he loves Me I will take all the veils in front of him!”
O Muslims! You do dhikr once a week, but do it everyday, every moment! If you do it once, Allah will give you unlimited rewards, depending on what you read. Al-Qushayri (r), one of the greatest scholars who is famous in North Africa, whose books many people study, said, “When the Angel of Death is ordered to take the life of one who remembers Allah, he will take permission from that person before he takes his life;” and he will wait until that person tells him “yes” or “no.” That is the meaning of the hadith of Prophet (s), “If Allah loves His servant and His Servant loves Him, He will take the veils away.” He took the veils from Imam Qushayri (r), and that is how he saw that reality and told people when Malak al-Mawt comes to take the soul of a dhaakir, he will ask him permission before he takes his soul. If he says “yes”, he will take the soul, if he says “no”, the angel of Death will not take his soul. But no one will say “no”, because they are going to be with the ar-Rafeeq ul-`Alaa, kama qaal an-nabi, (s) when Jibril (a) and Azra`eel (a) came to him, saying, “Yaa Rasoolullah, Allah is sending us! You chose (the only one who can chose): if you want to stay, you will stay (in dunya).” Prophet (s) said, “No! I will go to ar-Rafeeq ul-`Alaa, to the Highest Company, to be in the Company of Allah’s Divine Presence!”
Anas Ibn Malik (r) related this hadith from the Prophet (s):
Inna lillaahi `azza wa jalla bahran min noor hawlahu malaaikatun min noor `alaa jabali min noor bi aydeehim hiraabun min noor yusabihoona hawla dhaalika ’l-bahr. subhaana dhi ’l-mulki wa ’l-malakoot, subhaana dhi ’l-`izzati wa ’l-jabaroot subhaan al-Hayyi ’Lladhee laa yamoot, suboohun qudoosun Rabbu ’l-malaaikati wa Rooh. Faman qaalaha fee yawmin marratin aw fee shahrin marratin aw fee sannatin marratin aw fee `umrihi marratin ghaffar-Allahu ta`alaa maa taqadama min dhanbihi wa maa ta-akhkhara wa law kaanat dhunoobihi mithla zabadi’l-bahr aw mithal ramli `aalajin aw far min az-zahaf.
Allah (swt) created an ocean of Light that no one knows how deep it is and no one knows how big it is, and around that ocean are angels of Light, they are sitting upon mountains of Light, and in their hands are spears made from Light, and they are praising Allah (swt) around that ocean, and what are they saying? They are saying: Glory be to Allah in the Kingdom and in Heavens, Glory be to Him in Honor and Power, Glory be to the One who is Ever-Living, Who never dies, Glorified, Holy, Lord of the Angels. If anyone says it once in their day, or once in a month or once in a year or once in his life, Allah will forgive from all his sins, from before and what comes after, even if his sins are as many as the foam on an ocean of water or like the sands of a big mountain (to the east of Mecca and Madinah). If his sins are bigger than this mountain, from which he flees crawling, Allah (swt) will forgive him his sins.
O Muslims! Remember Allah, praise Him by saying, “Subhaan-Allah w’ alhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illa-Llah w’Allahu Akbar!” It is from Qur’an, it is not outside of the Qur’an, about which Prophet (s) mentioned, “These are four words from the Qur’an that if someone mentions, Allah will give them rewards that He didn’t give anyone else!” Anything from Qur’an is Divine, it is not makhlooq, created. They are Allah’s Divine Words that He revealed to Prophet (s) and no one knows their power.
From whom did we hear the Holy Qur’an? From our shuyookh. You cannot learn Holy Qur'an only by reading it, but it must be learned by tallaqi, when you look at the shaykh to see how he pronounces the words and take it from him. The shuyookh heard it from their shuyookh, and they heard it from their shuyookh, all the way back to a'immat al-Islam, the Four Imams, who heard it from the Tabi`een, and they heard it from the Sahaabah, who heard it from the Prophet (s). The a'immat al-Islam didn’t hear from the Prophet (s) only; Sahaabah heard from the Prophet (s) and only he heard it from Jibreel (a).
So how was the revelation; how did the Prophet (s) hear the Holy Qur'an? It was completely different from what we are hearing! When the Prophet (s) received the Divine Revelation of Holy Qur'an and was teaching the people to recite it, they were able to see the Light of Holy Qur'an coming from his mouth and reaching the Sahaabah!
That is the story of how Sayyidina `Umar (r) became Muslim. Previously, he would have killed anyone who said Sayyidina Muhammad (s) is on haqq. Sayyidina `Umar (r) was tough on new Muslims in the beginning, then they told him, “Why are you fighting us? Go and fight your sister who is Muslim!” So he went to his sister, who was with Khabbab the servant, who had brought them the saheefa, Holy Qur'an written on animal hides, and she was reciting it. As soon as he heard her recite, he cooled down and surrendered.
He came in and said, “Show me what you have?”
She said, “No, I cannot, because you are impure!”
Allahu Akbar! Can anyone say to Sayyidina `Umar, “You are not pure.” He would have killed them! Her words shocked him. His sister said to him in his face, “You are not clean; go take a shower before you touch that paper!” Allah wanted to guide Sayyidina `Umar (r) to the Prophet (s), because Prophet (s) had asked, “O Allah! Give me one of the two `Umars!” Allah (swt) gave him `Umar Ibn al-Khattab, not the other one, who was the greatest enemy of Prophet (s), Abu Jahl. So Sayyidina `Umar (r) took a shower and came to read that, and he immediately felt different, because they were hearing it firsthand from the Prophet (s) and the Light was with it, not like the diluted voices of today, although their voices are beautiful, the power of the Holy Qur’an within their mouths is not like the power of the Sahaabah (r).
So he went to Prophet (s), knocked at the door, and when the Sahaabah looked out and saw who it was, they said, “Yaa Rasoolullah, `Umar Ibn al-Khattab!” and they drew their swords as they were worried he might hurt the Prophet (s)!
Prophet (s) said, “Leave him. Open the door.” `Umar came in and the Prophet (s) asked him, “Why are you coming here?”
`Umar (r) said, “Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah!”
Then they knew he had become Muslim and they made takbeer wa tahmeed wa shukr wa ta`leel and he became Muslim with the Prophet (s)!
So the power of dhikrullah is immense. The Qur’an is Divine dhikrullah! The power of dhikrullah of Qur’an, hadith, ayaat or any mention of Allah Almighty’s Beautiful Names and Attributes is such that Allah (swt) will reward it and send that Light. As we mentioned before, Allah has oceans of Light and angels of Light upon mountains of Light, and He will dress you with His Light, which is why He said:
Man qaala subhaanAllah wa alhamdulillah wa la ilaaha ill 'Llah w 'Allahu akbar marratan wahidatan yuktab ...min adh-dhaakireen.
Whoever says, “Subhaan-Allah w’ alhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illa-Llah w’Alahu Akbar!”once in their life will be written as one of the People of Dhikr.
Say it now! Subhaan-Allah w’ alhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illa-Llah w’Alahu Akbar! Now we are written according to what is mentioned from adh-Dhakireen, and no one can deny that! Allah (swt) wants us to be saved, and with His power we are saved, inshaa-Allah. And I will mention one more hadith, there are many, but we try to limit:
Wal `Abdullah ibn`Umar, sa`altu qultu yaa Rasoolullah kunto maa ghaneematu majaallis adh-dhikr? Fa qaala n-nabi (s) ghaneematum majaallis adh-dhikr al-jannah.
And Abdullah, the son of Sayyidina `Umar, asked, “Yaa Rasoolullah! What are the rewards of the Associations of Dhikrullah?” Prophet (s) said, “Do you want to enter Paradise? The reward for majaalis adh-dhikr is Paradise!”
Do you want Paradise? Why are you comig to the masjid? As we mentioned yesterday, the hadith that angels are loking for majalis adh-dhikr in order to sit with the People of Paradise. The ghaneema, rewards, is that majlis becomes a Paradise, raudatun min riyaad al-jannah, farta`oo riyad al-jannah, to sit and get provisions, to get rewards for Akhirah, because such associations are from Jannah.
Abi Darda (r) related from the Prophet (s), “Allah will bring forth people on Judgment Day in whose faces is an-Noor.” He didn't say “noor;” “an-Noor” is one of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes and Allah will dress those dhakireen with the tajalli of that Beautiful Attribute and will make them stand on pulpits of light:
عَنْ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رضي الله عنهما قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! مَا غَنِيمَةُ مَجَالِسِ الذِّكْرِ؟ قَالَ: غَنِيمَةُ مَجَالِسِ الذِّكْرِ الْجَنَّةُ
Qultu yaa Rasoolullah! Maa ghanimata majaalisi ’d-dhikr? Qaala: ghanimata majaalisi ’dh-dhikri al-jannah.
`Abdullah ibn Amr (r) narrated: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah (s)! What is the reward for remembrance assemblies?” He said, “The reward for remembrance assemblies is Paradise.”
(Ahmad, Tabarani, Suyuti)

Wa `an Abi Darda radiallahu `anhu qaal: qaala Rasoolullahi layab-a`thanna-Llahu aqwaaman yawmal qiyaamati fee wujoohihim an-noor. `Alaa manaabiri 'l-lu'loo. Yaghbituhum an-naasu laysu bi anbiyaa-an wa laa shuhadaa-an. Qaal: fajathiya `araabiyyun `alaa rukbeteyhi, feqaal: yaa Rasoolullah, hilhum lanaa na`rifuhum. Qaal: humu'l mutahaabboona fee Allahi min qabaaila shatiyya wa bilaadin shatiyya. Yajtami`oona `alaa dhikrullahi yadhkuroon.
Abi Darda (r) said that Prophet (s) said, “On the Day of Judgment, Allah Almighty will resurrect some people with shining light on their faces. They will be sitting on pulpits made of pearls and the other people will envy them. They will neither be Prophets nor martyrs.” (Hearing this) a Bedouin bent down to his knees saying, “O, Holy Prophet of Allah Almighty! Please describe these people so that we may recognize them.” The Holy Prophet said, “They are the people who, regardless of their connection to different tribes and countries, love each other for the Sake of Allah Almighty and gather together to remember Him.” (Tabarani)
Look at the greatness of Prophet! In his time they were all Arabs, and now we are from every country, about which Prophet (s) said, “They will be those who are in love with each other and who are from different backgrounds and countries.” We are all different and we are here because of dhikrullah! We love each other because the souls on alastu bi rabbikum were like army battalions and we come together in dunya. Who sais Pakistanis will be in England? In England Pakistanis speak English, in France they speak French, in Spain they speak Spanish! Pakistanis are everywhere! That is a prediction of Prophet (s), because most dawah is done by Pakistanis, which it is not to compliment, that is a fact. I have been to places where it is impossible to find any Muslims, but there are the Pakistanis, even in Japan, and they speak Japanese! (laughter) “And they sit together and remember the Beautiful Names and Attributes.”
It is mentioned in the hadith that on the right side of Allah (swt), there are people who are not Prophets and not martyrs; they are very bright, the Noor is very strong, such that Prophets and martyrs are happy to be with them because then they are near to the right of Allah! The Sahaabah (r) asked, “Who are these people?” and Prophet (s) said, “They are groups of different tribes who sit together and remember Allah (swt). That is you: groups who sit with their shuyookh and remember Allah!
This is enough for today, and we will next speak about the Benefits of Surat al-Fatihah, but now some emergencies came up so I can't come this afternoon, but will see you later today in Bury. But now I will mention this hadith:
The Prophet (s) said:
من رائني في المنام فقد راءني حقا
Man ra'anee fi 'l-manaami faqad ra’anee haqqan.
Who saw me in the dream saw me in reality. (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)
Also, Abu Hurayrah (r) narrated that the Prophet (s) said:
من رآني في المنام فقد رأى الحق فإن الشيطان لا يتمثل بي
Man ra’anee fi ‘l-manami faqad ra’anee al-haqq fa inna ash-shaytan la yatamathala bee.
He who sees me in a dream has certainly seen me, because Shaytan can not take my form.
Here is a story from Grandshaykh `AbdAllah (q); I am quoting it, and when awliyaullah say something they are not going to lie, because Sayyidina Isma’il al-Bukhari (r) put bawaaib al-ahadith; he used to see Prophet (s) in his dream telling him which hadith is correct and which chapter heading to place it under, and he didn't put a hadith without seeing the Prophet (s) in his dream. Today many people I see around the world say, “Ten years ago, I saw in my dream a Shaykh with a long beard, blue eyes, and a jubba and turban like yours, guiding us.” That is Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) they are seeing, as Prophet (s) said, “Whoever saw me in the dream saw me in reality, as Shaytan cannot take my form.”
So I remembered that story when he (the reciter) was reciting Holy Qur'an for benefit, and when they recite Holy Qur'an for benefit it changes you. His voice brings khushu` in the heart, and while there are many who have nice voices, they don't hit the heart like his recitation! Allah gave him that specialty. So I say to you, I like to hear your recitation! He should recite the entire Holy Qur'an and put it on CDs and give it for free! We will miss our shaykh here, his voice is angelic! Allah gives beautiful voices to certain people.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
