Bismillaahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illa billahi 'l-`Aliyyu 'l-`Azheem. [Du`a.]

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaad, nawaytu ‘s-siyaam, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.

Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa Sayyidina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een. Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi, Qutb al-Mutasarrif, madad yaa Sultan al-Awliya. Nadharak himmatak, yaa Sayyidi ‘l-Kareem. Dastoor, yaa Sayyidi wa Mawlay, yaa Sayyidi Shaykh Nazim. Madad, yaa RijaalAllah.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi ta`aala wa barakaatuh.

Alhamdulillah, today is 8th Rajab, the ‘sanawiya’, anniversary of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim’s departure from this dunya to Akhirah. So, we are reciting Surat al-Yasin. In some countries Mawlid ash-Shareef is recited, and Khatm al-Qur’an from thirty booklets of thirty ajzaa. Thirty readers take about an hour in one sitting, and the thawaab, reward of that is given to the one who passed away. Today inshaa-Allah, we are reciting Surat al-Yasin. They also distribute a dessert, halwa, and the thawaab goes to the deceased. They also give water and juices.

Grandshaykh AbdAllah (q) told Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q), who told us that if you build a water fountain, for every drop that even snake drinks, Allah (swt) will write seven thawaab. If you are giving water, juice, drinks, or food for the soul of the deceased, Allah (swt) will write the thawaab and send it to that person.

That is usually what is done on the anniversary. Allah (swt) will distribute it as He wants, upon the souls of the deceased. Inshaa-Allah, tonight we will recite Surat Yasin all together. You can all join with me and, inshaa-Allah, we can make du`a at the end as well.

[Recitation of Surat al-Yasin & Khatm al-Khwajagan.]

May Allah (swt) accept this small service from us, this small time that we get together to remember the perfect ones, the shuyookh that have filled the earth. May Allah (swt) allow us to walk in their footsteps.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) walked in those footsteps: he followed a perfect one. Are you in search of a perfect one? “I am working at my job, I am at home, I am traveling, I have no time.” No time to look for the perfect one. We don’t know how to find a perfect one. There are clues. May Allah (swt) allow us to find one. When you find him, learn from him, follow him, be like him. Try to look like him, speak like him, pray like him, worship like him, and his noor will cross over to your heart.

When you follow the path of Rasoolullah (s), whatever he is encountering, you will encounter. If you follow an icebreaker ship, it will move things out of the path. When you follow the beloved of Allah, that love will reach you. If you follow Waliullah and that noor from the heart of Rasoolullah (s) shines on him, it will reach you. That’s why we follow them, to get nafahaat, breezes from the Divine Presence. That breeze reaches you, as well.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) found one, Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q), who also found one and he became perfect by following his shaykh, his master.

This is all from the kalaam of Awliyaullah. A perfect human being attains to four knowledges in which he perfects himself. The first is Maarifat an-Nafs wa ma yatakallubiha, to know your ego and what is related to it. Do you know your ego? We think we do!

Three, Maarifat ad-Dunya wa ma yatallakubiha. He has perfected the knowledge of this dunya and whatever relates to it.

Last, ma'rifat al-Akhirah. He has perfected the knowledge of Akhirah and what is related to it.

That is the `ilm, the knowledge that a human being has to seek. You have to know about yourself and what is related and attached to it, and about Allah (swt), al-imaanu billah wa bi malaaikatihi wa qutoobihi wa rasoolihi wa ‘l-Yaum al-Akhir, or what is related to Him.

You have to perfect the knowledge of your ego to reach the perfection of knowledge of Allah (swt), and you have to reach the perfection of the knowledge of dunya. That’s why we heard so many times from Awliyaullah that they can speak from any knowledge in dunya and they have mastered that. They don’t tell you but if it’s needed, it is open to them and they can debate or talk to the professor of any field and they will win that debate, because Allah (swt) created that science. Professors think they invented what they discover, but they just opened the cover. They did not invent science and all the laws of physics and chemistry and buoyancy and whatever that is.

Why doesn’t the ship sink? Because of the laws of buoyancy. Who invented that? They only discover what Allah (swt) created in dunya.

The Insaan Kaamil, the Perfect Human Being, which is Awliyaullah, has knowledge of all this dunya and what relates to it by Allah’s (swt) `ilm. He is the One Who created it. He tells them how things work, what things are about. They’re not jaahil. If Allah (swt) chooses Waliullah, He makes him `alim. Even if he was a jaahil in the beginning, he becomes `alim, a knower.

If you are trying to find a perfect murshid, you must have somebody with perfect knowledge of nafs, the ego. That is your major enemy. You have to find somebody that has perfect knowledge of Allah (swt) and what relates to Him: the Books, the Angels, the Messengers, aamantu billahi wa malaa`ikatihi wa qutoobihi wa rusulihi. All of what we recite, you have to find somebody that has perfect knowledge of this dunya and Akhirah and what’s in them.

Yusalikuka, they say, He will lead you. He will lead you from where? He will lead you from taqleed, customs, traditions. You know Allah by custom. “Yeah, my father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, neighbor, uncle told me about the Creator.” It is `adaa, a custom, habit. Mashaa-Allah, why do Muslims pray? It's their habit, they are accustomed to it. They are born and raised as Muslim, it's what they know, it's a custom.

A true shaykh, Waliullah, will take you out from habits, mimicking and customs to istidlaal, which is reasoning, a conclusion, deduction, extraction, research. He makes you think. Truly, there’s a Creator. You come out of that tradition of worshiping Allah to conclude, extract, see that of course there’s a Creator! After you read about the laws of buoyancy, you know somebody created it so these ships don’t sink: the displacement of water, so it stays afloat.

SubhaanAllah Khalaaq al-`Alim. Look, Allah (swt) has created. There’s a Creator! Somebody thought of it. Somebody thought of the moon, stars, rivers and decided, “This is what will happen.”

Awliya take you as a person of habit, one who says, “I pray with my father every day.” Why? To whom do you pray? He starts to show you istidlaal, the art of the Artist, so that you know there’s an Artist, a Designer, a Fashioner, a Creator. Who is it? To where does this knowledge come?

Who does the sun belong to, a void? Who has the deed of the sun? Who issues a license to the sun so it can go around its orbit? You have to think, O idiot!

Basically AwliyaAllah take you out from custom and habit to research, think, ponder, and question, which is istidlaal, finding evidence that points to a Creator. Then they take you to a level that ends all your doubts, yaqeen, certainty. You are people of custom or habit, then you become people of thought, pondering, research, then certain there’s a Creator that designed and is controlling all of this universe. That is a higher level of yaqeen.

When you reach that certainty, there’s another level: People of Vision. Waliullah, the perfect murshid, the one who has perfect knowledge of your ego, of the Creator, of dunya, of Akhirah, will take you from the People of Certainty and make you from the People of Vision, where you can see the spiritual worlds that you believe in. You see ghayb, the Unseen, which becomes shahadah for you. You know the unknown, you see the unseen.

You see spiritual beings.

Once Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) brought a young man to Grandshaykh ad-Daghestani’s (q) home. He saw this young man in the city. He looked different. That young man approached Mawlana Shaykh Nazim and told him, “I want to see your shaykh.” He said, “Come with me.” He took him up the mountain, Jabal Qasiyoun, and he brought him into Grandshaykh's private residence.

Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q) said, “O my son, Nazim Effendi, subhaanAllah. I was resting in my room and I saw angels.” He is from the People of Vision.

People don’t comprehend these levels. You have to come up from being People of Habit to People of Vision, who see angels. Did Sayyida Maryam, the Virgin Mary see angels or not? We believe it! Did Sayyidina Zakariah (a) see angels or not? Not only did they see angels, they heard them and had encounters with them. A human being can go up to that level of being People of Vision.

Why are you following a Waliullah,? To stay as People of Habit or to become People of Vision? We are people with the vision of sheep, snow, plows, and rusty cars! You have to ascend from being people of habit, doing everything by habit, tradition, custom and imitation to being People of Vision that you see angels as mentioned in Holy Qur’an and in other books.

Sayyida Maryam, Sayyidina Zakaria, Sayyidina Isma`eel, Sayyida Hajar, Sayyidina `Ibrahim and Anbiyaullah (alayhimu ‘s-salam) all saw angels. Grandshaykh `AbdAllah said, “I have seen angels in my room that are in the image of Shah Naqshband (q).” Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani knows how Shah Naqshbandi looks. How, when Shah Naqshband (q) lived 1000 years before him? They are People of Vision, for whom time and space are absent.

He said, “I knew there would be a person coming here from the haqiqah of Shah Naqshband (q),” on his way, of the same beauty and might, jalaal and jamaal.

When that person came in, he said, “He is one of the forty Budala,” a Murshid Kaamil as Mawlana Shaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q) was. How did he become a Murshid Kaamil? He followed a kaamil, Shaykh Sharafuddin ad-Daghestani (q). If you see a murshid who is perfect, you have to know that his shaykh was perfect. Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q) was a Murshid Kaamil that has taken care of his disciple, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q).

He said, “Yaa waladee! Come here. Isma`, listen to me,” and he gave him an advice. How can you give an advice to a person that is from the forty Budala? From which book do you read? If you have Waliullah in front of you, do you open a book and start talking to them? For People of Vision, it is said all books have to be washed off, they don’t touch books anymore. It’s finished, because you have reached the Divine Presence, you do not need a guide to take you there. You do not need evidence.

Do you ever use Apple Maps? When you reach your destination, at the end it says, “End route.” No directions anymore. There’s no need for your map! Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q) reached a level that he does not need a roadmap. He can teach without books or quoting anything. He can teach from the `ilm of the Divine Presence to that Waliullah in front of him. Waliullah is teaching Waliullah.

When you reach the level of People of Vision, you don’t need books anymore: you teach, advise. He said, hadhihi wasiyyatee, advice. “I’m advising you, O my son!”

Try to reach that, find that Murshid Kaamil that can take you to become the People of Vision, who see angels, Awliyaullah, Anbiyaullah. It is narrated that Imam al-Ghazali (q) met the ruh, spirit of Sayyidina Musa (a). Isn’t that true? When Imam al-Ghazali, Waliullah, reached perfection, he was allowed to meet with the souls of Anbiyaullah. That is our way and what we seek.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, “That one listened, he did not argue.” Why? He did not say, “I am Waliullah. You are Waliullah. You cannot teach me. You don’t know. I know.” There’s no argument. The sign of the People of Awliyaullah is when they reach the Divine Presence, they don’t argue anymore. There’s no debate, laa jidaala ba`d al-`ilmi 'l-haqqiqi. After you understand reality, there is no argument, “I am this. You are that. I have this. You have that. I take this part. You take that part. You are wrong. I am right.”

You have not reached because Allah (swt) says in Holy Qur’an, wa min an-naasi man yujaadillu fillahi bi ghayri `ilm wa laa kitaabin muneer.

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَـٰدِلُ فِى ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَلَا هُدًى وَلَا كِتَـٰبٍ مُّنِيرٍ

And yet, among men there are many who argue about Allah without having any knowledge [of Him], without any guidance, and without any light-giving Revelation. [Surat Al-Hajj, 22:8]

It means if they have knowledge, they don’t argue about Allah because they have reached the knowledge of Allah (swt). That is the sign of a true shaykh: one who doesn’t argue because they know the reality. They are, true shuyookh's, People of Vision. They know who you are.

Grandshaykh looked at him and said, “You are from the Budala that have been assigned here.” He read him right away. Where is that murshid nowadays? It is all a game. Nowadays everybody is just playing, imitating, calling, giving themselves titles. If you want to be from People of Vision, you have to find somebody who is going to take your hand up from People of Habit to People of Evidence, or research about Allah (swt) to People of Certainty, that you have no doubt about Him, to People of Vision, where you don’t need libraries of books as, all `ilm is open to you. Any `ilm you want reaches you.

I heard Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) say that any knowledge we want, we find it. Any section in the Divine Presence, any knowledge we need, it comes straight to us and we give. That’s what you need to be. That’s what Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) was, a perfect one who has perfection in the knowledge of the ego, in the knowledge of Allah (swt), in the knowledge of dunya and knowledge of Akhirah. Grandshaykh (q) was the same.

Try to follow in their footsteps. Maybe you can have a tartooshay, sprinkle! They say the beginning of rain is sprinkles, “Tick, tick,” a drop. After that, what happens? “Shhh,” the rahmah comes down. The beginning of rahmah is droplets. Ask for the sprinkles. By following them you might have a sprinkle hit you. [...]

When you follow your shaykh and he is cleaning his vision, some vision will reach you as well. May Allah (swt) make us from them. Try to get a tartooshay, a sprinkle, a droplet. May Allah (swt) make us on their path.

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, wa bi sirri Surat 'l-Fatihah.
