The Humble Will Be Granted Paradise

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

16 October 2009 Singapore

Jumu`ah Khutbah at Sultan Mosque

(5,000 attendees)

If you are humble, Allah (swt) and his Prophet (s) love you, and if you are not humble, Allah (swt) and his Prophet (s) would not. You have to be careful, because humility is the minbar of Islam and that is why you have to pay attention very well, to show humbleness here. If you think we are scholars or habeeb, you are wrong. Allah (swt) said, "Above all, even if you have learned Shari`ah and hadith, you should be humble or else you should be worried!"

ألا أخبركم بأهل الجنة‏؟‏ كل ضعيف مستضعف، لو أقسم على الله لأبره، ألا أخبركم بأهل النار‏؟‏ كل عتل جواظ جعظري متكبر‏.‏

Sayyidina Muhammad (s) said, "Would you like me to say, who are going to Paradise?" Because we are asking Allah (swt) not to punish us, but to send us to Paradise, and Prophet (s) said, "The people of Paradise are those who humble themselves and throw arrogance out from their hearts."

A very big scholar, Abu Yazid, said, "I respect those younger than me and those older than me. My duty is to respect, not to be respected."

And people asked, "How is that?"

He said, "The one younger than me did not commit many sins, so I have to respect him. And the older ones I respect because they completed more worship than me."

Ahl al-Jannah, the People of Paradise are da`eef, who always make themselves simple people, humble. You might see someone sitting in the masjid, a simple person.

Prophet (s) said, "Do you want me to tell you who are the People of Hellfire?" Everyone is ignorant, making themselves as if they are the best and no one can speak with them. Do you find in your life you might be that one? I might also be like that. That is why Prophet (s) made Sahaba (r) throw out arrogance from their hearts. Iblees' arrogance to make sajdah to Adam (a) brought Allah's curse upon him. Iblees refused, because he thought himself to be best. That is why that character, to think we are the best, is where arrogance originates.

O Muslims! In the hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, "One day a man passed by, and Prophet (s) asked someone sitting in front of us, 'What is your opinion about this man?' One replied, 'He is a man from the highest level of the community, and when you see him, you run to speak to him. And if someone comes to him, to intervene for the community, people will approach him.' Prophet (s) did not say anything, he let it go, and as they sat another man passed by. Prophet (s) asked about him from the first person, 'What do you think of this person?' And that one answered, 'This man is from the very poor in our society, and if he intervenes for someone, no one will listen to him.'"

Look how Prophet (s) gives evidence for us to learn from! About the first person who is highly respected in society, it means people will run to marry their daughters to him. And about the one who is poor in society, it means people will refuse to marry their daughters to him, whom they see as a disgusting person. We have this problem today, and we must be very careful. Look at this hadith of Prophet (s). About the poor one, no one will listen to him, because people today are so arrogant! Kibr it is only for Allah (swt)! One of Allah's Beautiful Names is al-Mutakabbir, "The One Who has the power to be arrogant for anything."

Sayyidina Muhammad (s) never showed arrogance. He had the same way of dealing with everyone. What do you think was the opinion of Prophet (s)?

Prophet (s) answered, "From the first one, even if there are millions like that, the poor one is more valuable in front of Allah (swt)."

Why? Because he has no arrogance. People see that one as bad, but it is not so in front of Allah (swt). The divine evaluation of a human being is not based on his level of wealth or poverty in dunya, but by how much purity is in their heart. O Muslims! This is Friday and du`a is accepted, so let us ask Allah (swt) to take away arrogance from our hearts and to make us humble people. Ameen.
