Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Institute & Mosque (ASIM)
[Recites opening Du`a of Khutbah.]
O Muslims, Believers! Allah (swt) wants something from us that He likes. When Allah wants something, it means He likes that thing; when he doesn’t want something, it means He doesn’t like that. He likes from the Ummah something that is so easy, but so precious. Allah knows what is in our hearts. Those who are coming to Jum`uah or going to masaajid for five prayers, or four prayers, or three prayers, or two prayers, or one prayer, they are showing one thing that Allah likes, and that is to make sajda, which forces Shaytan to run away. In sajda, what do you say? The sajda is a symbol of understanding the meaning that no one can put their head on the earth except those who believe "Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah",! It is said in a Holy Hadith that Allah (swt) said:
كنت كنزا مخفياً فأحببت أن أعرف فخلقت الخلق
I was a Hidden Treasure (and) I wanted to be known, so I created Creation. (Hadith Qudsi)
“I was a Hidden Treasure” means, “I was not known, I did not yet create any Creation.” Allah wanted to be known. What He wants from Himself, He wants us to like it also, and what He likes is to be praised! Allah can praise Himself, but the Ummah cannot praise themselves, they must praise Allah (swt)! He wants us to praise Him! He (swt) said:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّـهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. (Surat al-Fatihah, 1:2)
“Praise to The One, The Creator, The One Who created Creation! I was a Hidden Treasure and I wanted to be known, I like that, so to be known I created Creation and I praised Myself by saying, ‘Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.’”
Allah (swt) also said:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَى بِعَبْدِهِ
Glory be to He Who transported His servant. (Surat al-Israa’, 17:1)
“Praise be to the One Who took His servant to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa.” Allah likes the servant who says, “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah.” If we say it one time or one-hundred times or one-thousand times or one-million times--and of course there is so much blessing for who says it more--we will be under His Rahmah, and what is the description of His Rahmah? First of all, the description is that you are under His Mercy, and anyone under His Mercy will never be in Hellfire. How can someone who says, “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah” be put in Hell? It is impossible! Even if you sin but still you say, “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah”, it outweighs everything, it even takes away kufr! Al-Islam yajib ma qablah, when you say Shahaadah it takes all sins and if a non-Muslim says it, it waives his sins, so what about a Muslim, will it not waive his sins? When you say “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah", Allah forbids anyone to touch (harm) you, as the Prophet (s) said:
من قال لا اله الا الله دخل الجنة
Whoever says "Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah” enters Paradise. (Mustadrak of an-Nisaburi)
افضل الذكر لا اله الّا الله
The best remembrance of Allah is to say,“There is no god but Allah.” (Tirmidhi)
The best, highest level of dhikrullah--and if you don’t like that word, Allah mentioned it in Holy Qur'an many, many times, and the Prophet (s) mentioned it in strong Hadiths many, many times, among them muttafaqun `alayh, agreed upon by both Bukhari and Muslim, one of them being:
أَنَا جَلِيْسُ مَنْ ذَكَرَنِي
I sit with him who remembers Me. (Hadith Qudsi. Ahmad, Bayhaqi)
Finished [this is not debatable]! If you say “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah” now, Allah said in a divinely revealed Holy Hadith, “I am with the one who remembers Me, I sit with him.” If you sin, that is written a sin, however:
إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّـيِّئَاتِ
Good deeds waive the sins. (Surah Hud, 11:114)
When you say "Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah", that is a hasanah, so what will happen, what will Allah say? Allah is with you! When Allah is with us, what happens to our sins? They disappear, because Allah does not like His servant who says "Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah" to be touched by Hellfire. So say always, whenever you can, "Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah" and Allah (swt) will waive your sins, like the convert whose sins are waived when he says for the first time, “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah.” Won’t the sins of the Believers also be waived, as the Prophet (s) said:
أخوف ما أخاف على أمتي الشرك الخفي
What I fear most for my Ummah is hidden shirk. (Ahmad mentioned like it)
Hidden shirk means when you sin, so Allah (swt) is giving you something to say to reenter the Circles of Paradise, because dhikr circles are Gardens of Heavens:
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا مررتم برياض الجنة فارتع. قالو وما رياض الجنة؟ قال "حلق الذكر"
Ibn `Umar reported that the Prophet (s) said: "When you pass by the Gardens of Paradise, avail yourselves of them." The Companions asked: "What are the Gardens of Paradise, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "The circles of dhikr.” (Tirmidhi)
So make your heart, head, feet, mind, organs all Gardens of Paradise by remembering Allah (swt)! Allah
remembers us, but He wants us to remember Him! He will give us what no one knows, what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nothing can resemble what Allah will give you! The most important day in your life is not your birthday, celebrate the death day every moment with dhikrullah, because that will save you on your death day and your birthday will not save you then, it will make you sin more because in birthday parties we know what happens, but in death parties we also know what happens, all kinds of bad things, and one of them will remind you that Allah is taking your soul!
Allah (swt) said to the Prophet (s) in a strong hadith from Bukhari and Muslim:
سبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله: إمام عادل، وشاب نشأ في عبادة الله ، ورجل قلبه معلق في المساجد، ورجلان تحابا في الله، اجتمعا عليه، وتفرقا عليه، ورجل دعته امرأة ذات منصب وجمال، فقال: إنى أخاف الله، ورجل تصدق بصدقة فأخفاها حتى لا تعلم شماله ما تنفق يمينه، ورجل ذكر الله خالياً ففاضت عيناه
Seven people Allah will give them His Shade on the Day when there would be no shade but the Shade of His Throne (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection) and they are: a just ruler; a youth who grew up with the worship of Allah; a person whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love and meet each other and depart from each other for the sake of Allah; a man whom an extremely beautiful woman seduces (for illicit relations) but he (rejects this offer and) says, 'I fear Allah!'; a man who gives in charity and conceals it (to such an extent) that the left hand does not know what the right has given; and, a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes become tearful. (Bukhari, Muslim)
Seven different groups of people, Allah will what, shade them? Shade is actually a wrong description, as to have shade you must also have a form, a body, so what kind of ‘shade’ is Allah giving? It is not the shade we understand, that a cloud will come between us and the Sun shining down towards Earth and burn everyone's brain, it will not be a cloud. What kind of shade, if we want to use the word ‘shade’ will Allah give to you on Judgment Day, what is best to be given to you? The best is to be with Him, not ‘uniting’ with Him, as some `ulama said in the past about Wahdat al-Wujood, we don’t accept that belief. Allah will give you what you like most in your life!
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
O our Lord! Give us something good in this life and in the Next Life and protects us from the punishment of the Fire. (Surat Al-Baqara, 2:201)
“O Allah! When You judge us, give us hasanah in dunya and hasanah in Akhirah, and hide us and keep us away from Hellfire!” That rahmah is Sayyidina Muhammad (s), Mercy for all Humanity. That zhill is the Prophet (s) will take us in his arms, Allah gives him permission to intercede for everyone! That zhill is Sayyidina Muhammad’s Intercession for the Ummah! More than that, Allah (swt) will give you what no eye has seen, no ear has heard and what you cannot imagine when you say, “Yaa Rasoolullah!” Then Allah is happy because this leads you to say, “Laa ilaaha illa 'Llaah Muhammad Rasoolullah.” Allah accepts our prayer when we say, Iyyaaka na`budu wa iyyaaka nasta`een, “You alone we worship, yaa Allah, and You alone we ask for support.” Allah likes His servant to say, “I need you, yaa Rabbee,” to acknowledge that Allah helped us do goodness and Shaytan helped us to do bad.
O Muslims! Allah will give us shade (zhill) and that shade is Sayyidina Muhammad (s), to be with:
وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ ۚ وَحَسُنَ أُولَٰئِكَ رَفِيقًا
Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, they will be with those whom Allah has blessed from among the Prophets, the Truthful Ones, the Martyrs and the Pious Ones. What a wonderful companionship they are! (Surat an-Nisa, 4:69)
Allah will put us with that group of Prophets, Martyrs, Pious People and Sincere People. Allah gave that zhill (shade) to Prophet and he will give it to you! No one can understand how valuable that zhill is, and that’s why He said, “On that Day there is no shade except Allah’s Shade.” That means no rahmah except from Him, there is no one to save you, even all Prophets except Sayyidina Muhammad (s) will be running with their Nations for shade. To whom do they run? They run to the Prophet (s) to intercede for them!
So that zhill is zhill an-Nabi (s) that Allah will give him on Judgment Day, saying, “Yaa Muhammad, I have judged My servants: who does good I give him good and who has done bad I give him what he deserves. That is My Pen, My decision is done. Now I give it to you, yaa Muhammad, you do what you like with it, intercede for whom you like.”
What do you think Prophet (s) is going to do? You are sitting in Gardens of Paradise, as Prophet (s) said. Those people who are sitting in Gardens of Paradise, praying, praising, teaching Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, making dhikrullah, they take what, nothing? In dunya they get some money, it’s okay, but they will take the best in Akhirah. Allah (swt) is saying, “Be like these people!”
The first one mentioned that will be rewarded from that shade we are discussing is imaamun `adil, the just imams. He did not say ‘imaam’: you can be an imaam and unjust; He said ‘imaamun `adil’, there is a condition for the imaam and we will leave this point to discuss next week. May Allah bless us and support us and include us, “Among the Prophets, the Truthful Ones, the Martyrs and the Pious Ones.” (Surat an-Nisaa, 4:69)
