The Heavenly Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad (s)

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

17 July 2015 Burton, Michigan

`Eid al-Fitr Khutbah at As-Siddiq Institute & Mosque (ASIM)

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh. Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een. Alhamdulillah nasta`eenahu wa nastahdeeh ... (du`a).

Ramadan unites people and `Eid day is the celebration of this unity, as we see people that we haven’t seen for a year or half a year, and on `Eid day they come together as Allah (swt) said:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

Hold fast to Allah's rope and don't separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

“Hold tight to the rope of Allah and don't separate.” It is an order of Allah (swt) to come together and not to separate: we have to follow the example of the Prophet (s) uniting his Sahaabah (r) and the `ulama and the mashaykh have to unite their students under Shari`ah in order for Allah to be happy with everyone.

Allah praised and raised His Prophet (s)in a certain way that no one was raised before and `ulama wrote about his kindness, the greatness of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), and I will repeat this from his (s) Shamaa'il, behaviors, characteristics, and of how Allah created that atom, the Dharrat an-Nabi (s) from Heaven. He is not like us, created on Earth, but he was created in Heavens. That’s why he (s) said:

كنت نبي و ادم بين الماء و الطين

I was a prophet when Adam was between water and clay.

I was a prophet while Adam was between soul and body.

Also, “I was a prophet when there were no prophets, I was a prophet when there were no human beings, I was a prophet when Adam was between clay and water; I was a prophet from Noor”.

When Jaabir (r) asked, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Prophet of Allah! What is the first thing that Allah (swt) created?” the Prophet (s) said, “The first thing that Allah (swt) created is the Light of your Prophet from His Light, O Jaabir.” (Musannaf `Abdu ’r-Razzaq)

The first that Allah has created was the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), that is why we have to say, Huwa samee`un baseerun fee qabrihi ‘sh-shareef , He can see and hear in his holy grave, not like normal dead people that cannot see anything, only mu’mins who are following the Sunnah of Prophet (s) can be in their grave free from punishment, like Allah (swt) said:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

Do we want the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)? Everyone will say ‘yes’, so follow Sayyidina Muhammad (s) in every footstep he is stepping! That’s how to follow Prophet (s) according to Shari`ah and his Message: to learn Shari`ah of Islam, not Shari`at al-gharb, the constitution of wild animals in the forest when they fight with each other to eat each other, like nowadays we see people trying to eat each other! So he is Huwa samee`un baseer, He is hearing and seeing in his holy grave, as they say, haadirun wa naazhirun, he is present, he hears and he responds, but doesn’t respond to us. He (s) responded to the Bedouin who came to his grave and praised him when Prophet (s) was in his holy grave and Prophet (s) answered him through one of the Sahaabah (r) to tell him, “You are going to Paradise.”

Ali (r) asked the Prophet (s) about his Sunnah, and he said, “Ma`rifah is my capital, the mind is the basis of my religion, love is my foundation, longing is my vehicle, remembrance of Allah is my intimate friend, trust is my treasure, sadness is my companion, knowledge is my weapon, patience is my cloak, to be content is my winning, poverty is my pride, asceticism is my trade, certainty is my strength, truthfulness is my intercessor, obedience is my concern, struggle is my nature, and my pleasure is in prayer. (Ihya `Uloom ad-Din of Imam al-Ghazali)

“I asked Prophet (s) about his Sunnah, his way.” We say Sunnah, what does it mean? Man sanna fi ’l-Islami sunnatan hasanah, “It’s coming to who made a good example.” That is the Sunnah of Prophet (s), to be a good example, so when he was asked by Sayyidina `Ali (r) about his Sunnah, what did Prophet (s) say?

Whoever makes a good sunnah (path) in Islam will have the reward for it and the reward of everyone who follows it after him, without their rewards decreasing whatsoever. (Muslim, Nasa’i)

Ma`arifah is the Sunnah of Prophet (s): ma`rifatullah and ma`rifatu ‘l-habeeb wa ‘t-tafakkur fee khalqi ‘Llah hadhihi sunnatu ‘n-nabiyy (s) wa’l `aqlu aslu deenee.

And the mind is the basis of my religion. That means don't do anything without asking your mind, “Does this action I am about to do comply with Shari`ah or not?” If the act goes with Shari`ah, then you do it; if you think that it is not Shari`ah and everyone can determine for himself or herself, as Allah (swt) said:

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا

He inspired the self of its good and its bad. (Surat ash-Shams, 91:8)

“Allah (swt) has given to everyone what his ego is going to do, good or bad”, so when you think about what you are acting on, the inspiration comes to you from Allah (swt) to indicate if it is good or it is bad. If it is bad according to your mind, then this is an inspiration coming form Heavens to stop what you are doing; if it comes good, you follow it immediately and that is ittiba`, to follow the orders of the Prophet (s):

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا

Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)

Whatever the Prophet (s) gives you, you should take it, it’s Allah’s order to take whatever Prophet (s) tells us to take and to act on it, so you cannot act on your decisions only. Some people might act on their decisions and they are wrong, so in Shari`ah they sinned and they must repent, but if you act according to your mind, reasoning in a good way, then you are okay, you will be rewarded. How many times do you think you sin in a day? Every moment!

What I fear most for my Ummah is hidden shirk. (Ahmad mentioned like it.)

That means to see yourself beside Allah (swt), that you did this and you are going to feel something good, but it is Allah that made you do something good. If you do something bad it is Shaytan that made you do something bad, so you have to be careful where you stand, on this side or that side. Do you want to stand on the side of Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s) or do you want to be on the side of Shaytan, Iblees? Then check yourself, haasiboo qabl an tuhaasaboo, audit what your self has done during the day, before you will be judged by Allah (swt), then you cannot run away, you will be punished! But if you repent in dunya for what Allah ordered, then Allah will reward you and in your grave you will not run away, because your grave will be a grave of Allah’s Paradise. Then he said to Sayyidina `Ali (r):

Love is my foundation. “My foundation is love,” love in the right way, not love in the wrong way: to love Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s), which is the basics of Islam and to be with Prophet (s), as he said:

يحشر المرء مع من أحب

Each person will be resurrected with the one he loves. (Tabarani)

“People will be resurrected with whom they love,” so if you love the Prophet (s) then you will be resurrected with the Prophet (s); if you don't love the Prophet (s) then expect something else. When the Bedouin came and he didn’t have anything and he was asking the Prophet (s) about the signs of the Last Days, since 1400 years ago that is an alert and warning to us that the Day of Judgement is coming soon!

The Bedouin asked, “When is the Day of Judgement, give me something?” and Prophet (s) didn’t pay attention, he didn’t look at him when he was giving the khutbah. Then another time the Bedouin said, mata saa`a yaa rasoolillah, he was standing by the door of the masjid, and Prophet (s) didn’t answer because he was busy giving his suhbah; then he asked a third time, mataa sa`atu yaa rasoolillah? “When is the Day of Resurrection?” Then Prophet (s) said, “It’s a long travel, that takes some time. What have you prepared for it?” Not a long journey in years, but in `ibaadah, a long journey that you have to be under `ibaadatullah wa tawheed wa ismihi subhaanahu wa ta`ala. He said, “What have you prepared for that?” The Bedouin said, laa kathratan min siyaam wa laa min kathrati salaat, “It is not that I did too much of fasting, but mahbbatak yaa Rasoolillah, I love you!”

That’s why the Prophet (s) said, al-hubb asaasee, “My foundation is love.” When that Bedouin came from the desert he was rude (jaaf), he didn’t know anything of protocols or etiquettes, coming barefooted, no sandals on his feet, standing by the door of the masjid and asking like that [blurting it out] with no proper respect, but in his heart there was a big love to the Prophet (s), so anyone who follows that, to love Sayyidina Muhammad (s), “People will be resurrected with whom they love.” If you love the Prophet (s) then you will be with him in Akhirah, inshaa-Allah, and we ask to be with him in dunya, also!

The remembrance of Allah is my intimate friend. Wa dhikrullah aneesee. “And dhikrullah is my enjoyment; I enjoy when I make dhikrullah, I will be with my Lord as He said in the Holy Hadith, ‘I am sitting with the one who remembers Me.’”

I sit with him who remembers Me. (Hadith Qudsi. Ahmad, Bayhaqi)

“I am sitting with the one who remembers Me and mentions My Name,” so another time: do you want to be with Prophet (s) and Allah in His Divine Presence? Then remember Allah through your daily life!

Wa ‘th-thiqatu kanzee, and for people to trust me is my treasure. To have that good reputation that people will trust you, not to be untrustworthy, but make people trust you and be happy with you: don’t argue too much, don’t be stubborn on your opinion, fix your relationship with your parents, fix your relationship with your brothers and sisters, and if you are fighting try not to fight, give trust and come forward, don’t come backward!

This is `Eid, if you have a problem with your family try to solve it in a peaceful way and show them kindness. The one who first shows kindness is the one who will be rewarded more than the second or the third or the fourth. Don’t eat the relationship! Prophet (s) was so focused on silat ar-rahm, the connection through the womb in families, so to Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s) that’s a holy matter. Silat ar-Rahm is mentioned a lot in Qur’an and Hadith, so be the first to say, “Salaamu `alaykum” to your brothers or sisters and invite them and make them happy.

Knowledge is my weapon. The weapon is not to carry the sword, bomb or military weapon, it is silat an-nabi (s), as he said, it is knowledge: to be `alim, to understand all kinds of necessary ahadeeth of Prophet (s), Fiqh and Shari`ah, that is real knowledge. Secular knowledge is something else, it is not going to benefit you for your Day of Judgment. Sayyida `Ayesha (r) asked the Prophet (s) a question and he said:

من حوسب عذب

Whoever is taken to account will be punished. (Bukhari)

“Whoever is pulled for Judgment will be punished.” If Allah wants to choose someone to judge him, for sure he is going to be punished; this means each one of us will be punished if we are pulled to be judged! May Allah (swt) not put us in that situation: with the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) we are asking Prophet (s) from here, as he can see, he can hear, “Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah! Fa awda`naahu ilayk, we have given our matter to you, it is between your hands, you answer for us!” Wa rahmatee wasi’at kulla shay, Allah's Mercy encompasses everything, wa maa arsalnaaka illa rahmatan li ‘l-`Alameen, We have sent you as a Mercy for humanity, and My Mercy encompasses everything! That means My mercy contains everyone of Ummat an-Nabi (s)!

And patience is my cloak. Wa ‘s-sabru ridaa’ee, “Patience is what I wear on myself; it keeps me warm in winter and cool in summer.” That means sabr, patience: you have to be patient in Islam. The last of Allah’s Beautiful Names is As-Saboor, The Patient, so you have to be patient to your brothers and sisters, your father and your mother, don’t be stubborn against your family as they want the best for you. Don’t try to come against them, don’t come against your father and mother: wa laa taqul lahum uffin, don't say ‘uff’ to them!

Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but He and that you treat your parents with excellence. Whether one or the other of them reach old age in your life do not say ‘uff’ to them and do not repel them, rather speak to them kindly. (Surat al-Israa’, 17:23)

Don’t ever say ‘Uff’ to them; remember how they raised you up with tears, crying and great effort and sacrifice, so show them respect, show them familial connection. Sabr is important, to be patient with everyone. When someone suggests something, say, “Shukran! Yes, my brother, thank you,” don’t say to his face, not even if he is a stranger, “No, I don’t want to do that.” Have etiquette and protocol, keep quiet. Sayyidina `Ali (r) said, “Keep quiet, don’t talk,” zip your mouth!

To be content is my winning, and poverty is my pride. “And to be happy and satisfied with my belongings that Allah gave to me, these are precious to me in my life. Wa’l faqru, and poverty is my pride.” Today we are not happy if we have a little bit of money we want more, but the Prophet (s) is saying, “Poverty is my pride”, to go on Judgment Day and say, “Yaa Rabbee, I didn’t own anything.” He didn’t have anything so Allah will not judge him, but someone who has a lot or more than enough is going to be judged! May Allah (swt) not judge us.

Al-Junayd (q), who was a famous scholar and wali, was asked to define poverty. He did not define it but said, “Wait until tomorrow,” and he left the association and went home. He had one dinar and one dirham, silver coins, so he gave it away to poor people and then came back with no money, no hiding something in the bank--there were no banks to eat the money, their homes were their banks--he spent all he had fee sabeelillah, then he came the next day and defined poverty, like what Prophet (s) said to Sayyidina `Ali (r), wa’l faqru fakhree, “And poverty is my pride.”

He began to explain it and when he finished they asked him, “Yaa Imam, we asked you yesterday and you did not answer. What prompted you to answer today?”

He said, “My sons and daughters, I did not want to lie to you. I cannot describe poverty when I have something, so I went home and gave away everything I had fee sabeelillah. Now I am not lying because I don’t have anything.”

This is not our case today. Most people today, when they die they have a pension (accumulated investment wealth through employment), which is tool al-`amal, to have long hope. Why do you have to think about what will happen tomorrow? If you really believe that Allah is ar-Razzaq, The One That Provides, then you don't need to think about your pension. That is a system to take people’s money, although I’m not against it here as this is the system, but in Islam you don’t think of what will be in 2020, 2030 or 2050, long-term plans for the future, like they tell you to invest 7% for long-term financial gains and really you don’t know what will happen. Everything is built today on money, so don’t let money deviate you from the Right Way.

Asceticism is my profession. Wa ‘z-zuhdu hirfatee, “And to be ascetic,” to leave dunya completely and focus on Akhirah, because that is where you need to invest your hasanaat. Today they say if you want to be saved in dunya then run after your money, build it up! Allah is saying, “No! Run after Me, I will provide for you.” What more do you want than to drink, eat, wear one jubbah, one suit, and you have two suits and two jubbah and you change them?

Sayyidina `Ali (r) and Sayyida Fatima az-Zahra (r) did not have but one garment to pray in, so while Sayyidna `Ali (r) was praying, Sayyidina Fatima (r) waited until he finished so she could pray using the clean garment. Now today we have closets full of pants, sweaters, shirts and jubbas. The Prophet (s) had only a few things, he slept on a mattress of straw and now we are sleeping on mattresses made of special bird feathers and we still say it is not relaxing. Now they made a new mattress with a remote control, with precise temperature controls and it fixes your back, but that is a lie! (Laughter.) That is how they are spoiling people. Prophet (s) had a mattress and a pillow from straw and it was enough for him to sleep on. Today we complain, “This mattress is making my back hurt!” You and your back inshaa-Allah go to Paradise!

Certainty is my strength. Wa ‘l-yaqeenu rizqee, “Certainty, yaqeen is my food,” from certainty of what you are saying.” It means your food is always halaal in the sense that, “I take my power from whatever Allah has provided me.”

The truth is my brother. Wa ‘s-sidqu shaqeeqee, “And the truth is my brother.” Today you fight with your brother, so how do you find the truth? Everyone says "I", the other one will say, “No, I.” Say "eye" instead of saying one letter, “I". Everyone fights with each other today, saying, “I”, there is so much anaaniyaa, selfishness, and you want to fight your brother, your sister to make Shaytan happy and make your parents upset and then then where is your `amal, good deeds? It is gone, you destroyed it!

Obedience is my concern. The Prophet (s) said, “Obedience is what I worry about: to obey Allah (swt).”

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

If you obey Allah without obeying Prophet (s), you didn’t achieve anything, as if you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah” without including, “Muhammadan Rasoolullah”, no. it is not enough and you are an unbeliever if you do that! When you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah” without “Muhammadun Rasoolullah”, angels will throw it in your face, but when you complete it with “Muhammadun Rasoolullah”, you will be rewarded with salawaat on Prophet (s) as if you obeyed Allah!

Verily, Allah and His angels send praise on the Prophet. O Believers! Pray upon him and greet him with a worthy salutation. (Surat al-'Ahzaab, 33:56)

And jihad is my good behavior. Wa ‘l-jihaad khuluqee, Jihad an-nafs, the struggle against the ego, is to fix our behavior, so you have to struggle against the ego in order to polish it, so you make jihad by denying your nafs and Allah (swt) will reward you with His Manifestations of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes.

My pleasure is in prayer. “Most relaxing for me is when I pray.” When I say, “Allahu Akbar,” I will be in the presence of the Prophet (s) and from there to the Divine Presence.

The fruit of my heart is dhikrullah. Thamaratu qalbee dhikrullah, “To remember my Lord, that is where I get fruit.” Today they give you fruit and you will be happy because it is nice; Islam was the fruit and all what we have explained are the answers that Prophet (s) showed to Sayyidina `Ali (r).

Prophet (s) said, “When I remember my Lord, dhikrullah, that is the fruit for my heart.” Is that correct for us? That is correct for us to do, but we are not doing it, so we are asking, “Yaa Rabbee, assign one of billions of angels to do it on our behalf. We are weak, we are sinners.” No one can claim he did not sin, not even children, although they are infallible. “So make us children, yaa Rabbee. Make us sheep, not shepherds.” Those that declare and claim they are shuyookh, run away from it because it is not going to help you! You are going to fall down like Iblees was once the biggest `alim and for one wrong thing Allah threw him out of Paradise, and not only that, but He cursed him because he said, “I will not make sajda to Adam!” Our intention is to make sajda to Allah (swt), but as soon you enter the prayer all kinds of whispers and gossips come to your mind to deviate you from the Right Way, but Allah will not deprive you from the benefit and rewards of your prayers.

And if I feel bad, my concern is my Ummah. Wa ghammee li ummatee, “I want them to be saved, so I keep thinking about them, “Yaa Rabbee, my Ummah my Ummah.” When the Prophet (s) was born, his blessed mother heard him saying. “My Ummah, my Ummah!” which is mentioned in many Mawlid books. In his adult life in dunya, the Prophet (s) was saying, “Ummatee, ummatee!” In the day that Allah (swt) invited him to Qaaba Qawsayni aw `Adnaa, he asked for his Ummah. In the day that he left dunya, he asked Sayyidina Jibreel (a), “What will happen to my Ummah after me?” On Judgment Day, when he is standing before Allah (swt) and all Prophets are shaking, he is the only one to stand and say, “My Ummah, my Ummah, Ummatee, Ummatee!” He is concerned more about the Ummah than we are concerned about ourselves and still we are fighting and stubborn, not making peace with our fathers and mothers and wives!

My passion is for my Lord. Wa shawqee ilaa rabbee, “My good manners my compassion is for my Lord, the good behavior is for my Lord, to learn `ilm is for my Lord, the good understanding is for my Lord, the good `ilm is for my Lord.” Every good you do is for Him, every bad you do is against yourself--remember that!

It is said the Prophet (s) was given the power of forty prophets and I will add on that: the Prophet (s) was given power over 124,000 prophets and all Creation, both heavenly and earthly. When he mentioned this to Sayyidina `Ali (r), it was when he wanted to raise him up to break the idols of Ka`aba and call adhaan there, so he tried to show his power to Prophet (s) and said, “Sit on my neck and I will raise you up,” although it is said in many shuyukhs’ explanations that one day Sayyidina `Ali (r) was walking in Madinat al-Munawwarah and he saw very, very old lady, over a hundred years, carrying a basket and going to her place.

Out of courtesy and respect, he approached her and said, “O my mother! May I help you?”

She said, “Yes, you can help me, I will appreciate that.”

He said, “Can I carry your basket?”

She said, “Yes.”

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said Sayyidina `Ali (r) went to carry the basket, as he is Asadullah al-Ghalib, the lion, the victor of many wars, but he was not able to raise that basket higher than his knees, but when he looked nothing heavy was there! What was he trying to carry that would not rise above his knees? So that lady said, “Yaa `Ali,” she didn’t put a title...today we all want to have a title of Phd, MSC, or shaykh or mutamashaykh, that is better for us, claiming we are shaykhs, we are not, we cannot carry the basket. Sayyidnia `Ali (r) with all his grandeur was not able to carry beyond his knees!

The lady said, “Yaa `Ali, Allah ordered me to put the whole dunya in this basket and by Allah’s Order, I can carry it. You carried the dunya up to your knees. you were not able to carry it more.”

With this same power he wanted to carry Prophet (s) on his shoulders, but he was not able. So Prophet (s) got down and took Sayyidina `Ali (r) on his shoulders, raised him up and said, “Yaa `Ali, this is me,” and raised him on his shoulders up to the Ka`aba.

Sayyidina `Ali (r) said, “When I mentioned the name of Prophet (s), I was able to raise anything to the Second Paradise.”

Narrated in Tafsir Ruh al-Bayan:

Allah created the head of Prophet (s) from barakah, his eyes from shyness. [He was shy to raise his eyes, although his eyes saw Allah (swt) on the day of Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adna, as explained by many scholars, one of them being Imam Nawawi on the tafseer of the Hadith of Mi’raaj], and He created his tongue from dhikrullah [that tongue will never stop making dhikrullah], and his lips from tasbeeh [his lips can count the tasbeeh that Prophet (s) does; there are prayers with special tasbeeh at the end and the lips of Prophet (s) move by themselves to make that tasbeeh], and his face from satisfaction, and his chest from sincerity, and his heart from mercy and his chest from feeling good toward everyone, and his two hands from generosity, and his hair from the grass of Paradise [a special plant],and He created his saliva from the honey of Paradise, and his flesh from the musk of Heavens, his teeth from his good behavior, and his feet from satisfaction. When Allah (swt) had completed that creation of His Holy Prophet (s), He sent him to his Ummah and said, “My gift to you, O Ummat an-Nabi. I am gifting you Prophet (s). Know his greatness and praise him.”

Look at the honor of this Ummah!

You were the best of Nations evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)

“You were the best of Nations sent forth to humanity, Ummat an-Nabi (s),” not because of us, but because of Prophet (s). May Allah (swt) praise His Prophet (s) and raise His Prophet (s) to highest levels.
