Two Mureeds Had an Extraordinary Love to Shaykh `Abdullah (q)

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

18 October 2014 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

Zhuhr Suhbah

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Salaam `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh, wherever you are, all lovers of Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil, may Allah bless his soul, and lovers of Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa'iz ad-Daghestani, may Allah bless his soul, and may Allah bless all our souls for the baraka of the Prophet (s), for the love of the Prophet (s)! Yaa Rabbee, yaa Allah! Bless our souls as You blessed the souls of Your awliya, and a you blessed the souls of Your prophets and as you bless those souls who don’t deserve, but out of Your love, Your generosity, Your mercy, You dress them when You like, so dress us from those blessings, as well!

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem

أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ

Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

How to Get Complete Clearance for Akhirah

One time Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, was reading this verse of Holy Qur'an, “Obey Allah, obey the Prophet (s) and obey those who are on authority,” and he reads this in every suhbat and in every prayer, and he said this is the head of every `amal we have to do, to say to ourselves--to our ego, to our body, to our heart-- “Obey Allah, oh my organs, my body, my ego, my hands, my feet, my heart, my head, my eyes, my ears! Obey Allah! Obey Him!” And when we read that ayah the secret of obedience will dress us. When we read that ayah, Allah's `itaat will dress us, then we recite Kalimat at-Tawheed, the Reality of Oneness, the declaration from your heart, body and mind that Allah is Creator and that everyone is servant. Why He said after ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah,’ “Muhammadan Rasoolullah” and there Kalimat at-Tawheed ends? That means the Prophet (s) is the servant of Allah (swt)!

So when we say Kalimat at-Tawheed, it covers everything; when you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammadan Rasoolullah,” it clears you of all shortcomings and dresses you with the dress of Tawheed. For a non-Muslim to say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammadan Rasoolullah,” all his sins are gone,

الإسلام يجب ما قبله والتوبة تجب ما كان قبلها

al-islaamu yajibu ma qablahahu w’at-tawbat tajib maa kaana qablahaa.

Islam will clear everything that came before it and repentance will clear what was done before it. (Sahih Muslim)

Like when you clean your computer you remove all information that was previously stored and is is as if you have a new computer. So when you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammad Rasooullah,” it clears everything (bad) you have done and it brings you clean. That is for the person who is converting, Allah guided him to Islam. So if that is for a non-Muslim who spent all his time in doing all kind of sins, to be forgiven when he says, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah,” then what do you think for a Muslim or a mu’min who will say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammadan Rasoolullah,” what will he get? If a non-Muslim gets clearance, like today they say to work in a government or a company they check you and you have to get clearance, and if you pass then you can work there because they can trust you and how many get rejected because they could not pass that. But ‘laa ilaaha illa-Llaah’ clears you of everything, nothing will be left, it clears you to enter Paradise! Look at the Greatness of Kalimat at-Tawheed! If that is for a non-Muslim, what then for a Muslim saying Kalimat at-Tawheed? Allah (swt) will give, as stated in the hadith of Imam Bukhari:

مَا لاَ عَيْنٌ رَأَتْ، وَلاَ أُذُنٌ سَمِعَتْ، وَلاَ خَطَرَ عَلَى قَلْبِ بَشَرٍ

Maa laa `aynun raa’at, wa laa udhunun sami`at wa laa khatar `alaa qalbi bashar.

No eye has seen and no ear heard and never imagined (by mind), nor has it occurred to the human heart. (Bukhari)

The Dress of Servanthood

It is related that Prophet (s) said that, as reported by Imam Bukhari. Allah will give you maa laa`aynun raa’at, an eye that never saw like that. That means whatever you see in this whole universe will not be what you get in Paradise; what you see in this whole universe with all its greatness might be an atom of what you get in Paradise! Maa laa`aynun raa’at means “something never seen in dunya”, so you cannot compare it to anything in dunya, and that is what you are dressed with, a servanthood dress. This is when you say “atee`oollah,” Allah will dress you with what no eye has ever seen, wa laa udhunu sami`at, and no ear from the beginning of Sayyidina Adam (a) to Judgment Day, never an ear was able to hear what Allah is going to give you in Paradise, such is its greatness! Wa laa udhunu sami`at, never an ear in dunya will be able to hear what Allah is giving in Akhirah in Paradise. Hellfire for mu’min, for converts, for Muslims is completely gone as you will have been cleared, and when someone is cleared he can take the highest position! Correct? So let us clear ourselves.

Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ

Fa laa tuzakoo anfusakum.

Don’t praise yourself. (Surat an-Najm, 53:32)

Don't praise your ego, your self. So when Allah says, “Don't praise yourself,” it means, “Don't come to Me with an ego, come to Me with weakness and helplessness, and ask to be under laa ilaaha illa-Llaah.” When we say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah,” then Allah will dress us with what is hidden to the eye and never an ear heard or comprehendsed, and wa laa khatar `ala qalbi bashar, what cannot be grasped by the human mind! That is why to give us the taste and where we can get that clearance, Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىَ جُنُوبِهِمْ

Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting and lying down.

(Surat Aali Imraan, 3:191)

Those are the ones whose files have been cleared up; all their files are waived, those who are dhaakireen Allah, those who are making dhikrullah, remembering Allah (swt) and evidence of the clearance is the hadith of the Prophet (s), where he says that Allah (swt) says:

أَنَا جَلِيْسُ مَنْ ذَكَرَنِي

Anaa jaleesu man dhakaranee.

I sit with him who remembers Me. (Ahmad, Bayhaqi)

The Power of ‘Obey Allah, Obey his Messenger and Obey Those in Authority”

“I am sitting with the one who remembers Me.” So it means Allah (swt) is so near to the one who remembers Allah because he has been cleared up, that dhikrullah has purified him of every sin like an angel with no sins and at that time he will be dressed with Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes and that is from saying “Atee`oollah.” If every `amal you do starts by saying Atee`oollah, that is, “Obey Me, O My servant!” ati`anee ya `abdee, sami`na wa ata`na, “we hear and we obey”, any `amal you do, first remember `itaat Allah, obey Allah, that Allah is waiting for you to say, “I am obeying.”

We are sinful and we have shortcomings, so what do we have to do? We have to say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammadan Rasoolullah,” then we will be cleared up, nothing will be left by saying Kalimat at-Tawheed. How Allah (swt) loves that sentence! So you will be cleared up completely and when cleared, then Heavens opens for you. Allah says when you do that, you become of the those who remember Allah, as Allah said in Holy Qur’an, qiyaaman wa qu`oodan wa `ala junoobihim, standing and sitting and laying down. That means every 24 hours, because either you are standing, sitting and laying down, so you cover your day with dhikrullah, to remember Allah all the time: whatever you are doing, wherever you are, at work, at home, at the market, remembering Allah in your eyes, in your heart and on your tongue! And at that time, Allah allows you to make tafakkur, those who think about Heavens and and Earth:

وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ

Wa yatafakkaroona fee khalqi ’s-samaawaati wa ’l-ard.

And contemplating the creation of the Heavens and the Earth. (Surat Aali `Imraan, 3:191)

Those Allah will direct through their hearts, direct them to have contemplation, meditation, reflection, to have thoughtfulness, and to have ma`rifat and `irfan, to have all these Levels of Spirituality. All this is coming under “laa ilaaha illa-Llaah.”

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said when you say, “Atee`oollaha”, it is as if you have performed all 500 orders of `ibaadah, as there are 500 orders of `ibaadah and 800 forbiddens, soit is as if you have completed them by saying, “Atee`oollaha.” That word has a magnificent power that will take you all the way to the Divine Presence, even you didn't do anything for it, only read it, “Atee`oollaha.” That is why he said, “The head of every lecture is, ‘Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.’” And that ‘ati`eeollah’will take you as if you have performed all 500 obligations and as if you have thrown away all 800 forbiddens! So you will be rewarded as if you did both sides, as if you did your fruit, your awraad, your prayers and have completely performed all Five Pillars of Islam and all Six Pillars of Imaan and Maqaam al-Ihsaan when you recite this yourself!

Daily Recitation

That is why it is important to recite “Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum” 100 times or 70 times or 10 times daily. Remind yourself and remember that, and then Allah will give you tafakkur and that tafakkur will boost you, like today they say, “Did you boost your post?” Boost it. That verse of Holy Qur’an will boost you to the Divine Presence by saying, “Atee`oollaha,” and then you will be as if you did all the 500 obligations and left all 800 forbiddens when you say, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llaah Muhammadan Rasoolullah.” Then wa atee`oo 'r-Rasool means “and obey Prophet (s)”, but by what? When you say that you are saying that Sayyidina Muhammad (s) is al-Mukhtar al-Mustafa, that Allah has perfected him and dressed him and he is the Master of Human Beings.

أَنَا سَيِّدُ وَلَدِ آدَمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلاَ فَخْرَ

I am the Master of the Children of Adam on the Day of Judgment, with no pride.

(Narrated Abu Sa`eed, Tirmidhi)

آدم فمن دونه تحت لوائي ولا فخر

Adam and whoever is other than him will be under my flag on the Day of Judgment, with no pride.

(Ahmad in his Musnad)

“Sayyidina Adam (a) and all under him are under my flag on Judgment Day,” and, “I am the Master of the Children of Adam on Judgment Day and I say this without pride as Allah gave this to me!” So when you say “Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” He dresses you from that tajalli as if you have performed all what Prophet (s) showed us of his sunnan, all the Sunnah that the Prophet (s) used to do, you will be dressed with them!

Clearance to Be with Prophet (s) Every Moment

Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa'iz ad-Daghestani (q) used to say, “O Allah! Grant me a share of the worship and prayers of the Prophet (s),” so we have to say, “O Allah! Grant us a share in the `ibaadah of the Prophet (s)!” We cannot do it, but he (s) can do it as he is Sayyid al-Bashar and not only that, He is Sayyid al-Kawnayn w ’ath-Thaqalayn, The Master of All Creation! Allah (swt) granted him to be Master of All Creations as a servant of Allah (swt)!

So when we say “Muhammadan Rasoolullah” we are accepting to follow him, and Allah says if you want to follow, then you want to say “laa ilaaha illa-Llaah” and be dressed with that. It means:

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

Through remembering Him and saying, “laa ilaaha illa-Llaah,” then itibee`oo Muhammad. Allah is saying, “Qul (yaa Muhammad), Say to them, in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha, if you really love Allah,” that is a condition, it means you love Kalimat at-Tawheed, that you love to obey Him and keep obedience to Him, then you will be dressed and get clearance to be with the Prophet (s) and enter Paradise! So when you do that and say, “Muhammadun Rasoolullah,” then you have clearance to be with the Prophet (s) in every moment in your life! If you cannot feel it, still he (s) is sending. They know what they gave us. When you say “Muhammadan Rasoolullah,” what is under that ayah:

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا

Wa maa aataakumu ’r-rasoolu fakhudhoohu wa maa nahaakum `anhu fantahoo.

Leave what Prophet (s) forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)

“What the Prophet (s) brought take and what the Prophet (s) forbade leave it,” Grandshaykh (q) said it is as if you have done that, when you say, “`Atee`oo 'r-Rasool,” that has the power to take you to complete `ibaadah. On your behalf, Allah (swt) will assign angels to do `ibaadah that is following in the way of Prophet (s), itib`aa an-Nabi (s) and whatever he gave us, as if we have performed them of all the sunaan that have been mentioned, all the du`as that Prophet (s) has mentioned, that is why they call it Du`a al-Mathoor, the du`as that the Prophet (s) was mentioning. manthooraat, all the du`as that he mentioned as if you have read them all and ask Allah (swt) through them all by saying, “Ati`eeoo ‘r-Rasool.”

And look at the difference in how awliyaullah look at that ayah from how `ulama look at that ayah. It is a big difference. The same route, the same trunk, but different branches like these branches have fruit and these have less fruit. Awliyaullah have full fruits on their branches; `ulama of course they have, for sure, but not as full and perfect as awliyaullah have. So you look at the tree and you like a tree full of colors, like the autumn season now has red, yellow and orange leaves, and you look at another tree which is only green. Which one takes your eyes more? The one with the colors; the green one is not as colorful, although the green is nice. You will have both, as from awliyaullah you will have the green within the colorful one, and `ulama have one, the green one, but awliyaullah have both so you will be a rainbow of `ibaadah.

Follow Awliya Who are Scholars

Wa ooli 'l-amri minkum, “And obey those in authority among you.” Ooli ‘l-amri, here are awliya and `ulama al-Ummah, but there are awliyaullah who are at the same time `ulama al-Ummah, because awliyaullah are educated, they studied Shari`atullah al-ghuraa al-mutahharah and they know about it. As we said many times, in previous times you could not get baya` from your shaykh until you studied Shari`ah completely, because they want you to know this is the trunk and the rest are branches; you can graft on the branches, but if the trunk goes the whole tree will go. So you have to make sure that Shari`ah is part of your daily life. In every moment you have to remind yourself that, “Yes, I am obeying Allah (swt) through His Shari`ah and I am following the Prophet (s) in His Shari`ah and guided by awliyaullah and `ulama through Shari`ah.” But from a wali or `alim there are levels: there are `ulama who are at the same time awliyaullah and there are `ulama who at the same time are not awliya, because awliyaullah don't get angry; if they get angry from their followers how the followers will follow the shaykh? The guides, especially in our Tariqat, the Naqshbandi Order, cannot show anger; if you show anger you are lost.

The Loving Character of Awliya

Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said, “You cannot break the heart of someone else through anger.” He said, “In my life I never broke the heart of someone because I know if I break his heart he is going and never coming back, so I have to make idaarah (balance), but for two people in my life I get angry in their faces, because they can carry it, they will not run away out of their love to me, even if I throw them from the door they will come from the window.” So that takes us to something that I never knew before, but I will say it out of love and to show how much Mawlana was a person with such a loving character, both Grandshaykh (q) and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q).

I have many manuscripts that I have collected, but when there was problem in Damascus a long time ago, not like this problem today, but a normal problem, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, may Allah bless his soul, came to stay in my home where he usually stays when he comes to Lebanon and at that time we were living in Tripoli, Lebanon. He came with his simple bag, very old, it might be an antique now and he had some papers and some notes of Grandshaykh (q) because every lecture Grandshaykh gave, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim wrote it. When he transcribes, sometimes he missed something because he did not write when he was translating. So Mawlana Shaykh Nazim asked Grandshaykh one time in his seclusion, “Yaa Sayyidee, please make du`a that I don't forget anything you say in your suhbah so that when I go home I can transcribe it all.”

And I heard this from Grandshaykh, he said, “I made du`a that night and in the association of awliyaullah I made petition in a vision, saying, ‘Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasulullah! My son, waladee Shaykh Nazim Effendi is asking this,” and the Prophet (s) said, “I am happy and accepting and sending him power to do that.”

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said from that time, whenever he wrote the suhbah after reaching home, even days later he remembered the suhbah and did not miss even the comma or the period and where he had to put it! And one time he said to me, “You are Ka`b al-Ahbar[1] (r) for me,” because I was writing everything Mawlana Grandshaykh says. I remember Mawlana Shaykh Nazim did not miss anything; as soon as he sat to write it, even days later, it opened on his heart.

So when he came to Lebanon when there was some trouble in Damascus, in his suitcase were some notebooks, seven or eight of them, although he had hundreds, and some old papers that were falling apart. Week before last, I was looking through some manuscripts and came across his bag and found the notes that he had from many different notebooks and there were many papers mixed. I have looked through it many times, but this time I saw what I did not see before, a piece of paper came in my hand the size of one hand, a very old paper with 14 bullet points. On it were #6 and #12. There is one line written in the old Turkish alphabet which is the Arabic alphabet, and I saw my name and Shaykh Adnan’s name, and I know a little Turkish when it is written in Arabic letters, but it’s still not easy to read and many Turks don't read Arabic Ottoman-style letters. So I called my wife, Hajjah Naziha, who learned to read old Turkish from her father and mother. I saw the letters and words and had some idea, but then she began to read and I began to understand more, and one day we will bring that paper inshaa-Allah. There were some things written about me and my brother. That was in 1388 Hijri, about 50 years ago when I was around 20 years of age. I never saw that paper, I never heard Mawlana say anything about it, but after 50 years that treasure opened. I will not say the treasure of what he said, that is private, but I am saying that love to the shaykh opens ways for you and 50 years of love for Grandshaykh (q), from the age of 20 years, and before 20 years I knew him since I was 9 years of age, but at 20 years you become an adult and you can understand well how much we were in love with Grandshaykh and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim.

Love Makes Miracles

And about #6, he says, I will open a little bit of what he said, and that is what Mawlana wrote in the papers in the notebook that was written in 1388 Hijri, 50 years ago. We have to translate it very well. Grandshaykh `Abdullah al-Fa'iz ad-Daghestani (q) said and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) wrote, “I wish I have the love to my shaykh, Shaykh Sharafuddin (q), as Hisham and Adnan have to me.” And he said more that I will not say, but I never knew that Grandshaykh said that in all my life until two weeks ago when I saw that paper! I showed that to you (Ali) and you (Ishaq). Love makes miracles, love makes everything! Not the artificial kind of love like, “I love you and you love me, we are a happy family,” no, love that you hear of after 50 years that your shaykh spoke about and you never knew that secret which was completely hidden!

Forget whatever we did, it's enough honor for us on Judgment Day to stand in front of the Prophet (s) for shafa`a yaa Rasoolullah, and Grandshaykh (q) and Mawlana Shaykh (q) with us, and to be holding that piece of paper without us knowing for 50 years! How great it was when I saw that paper! If you ask something, then that is an ego issue, but for your shaykh to tell his khalifah, Shaykh Nazim (q), “Hisham and Adnan, I wish I have that love to my shaykh, Shaykh Sharafuddin,” without me being there. He was not praising us in our presence, in order to make us feel better or be strong, no! He was saying it without us knowing and never Mawlana Shaykh mentioned that to us, mentioned in that way, although in another way he mentioned it, and I was not believing it, I was shocked to see “Your shaykh is happy with your love to him.”

Glad Tidings to All

That is Mahabbatullah, Mahabbat al-Habeeb, Mahabbat al-Mashaykh, love of Allah (swt) and love of the Prophet (s) and love of the shaykh! And I never saw that until two weeks ago, and Shaykh Adnan never saw it and I did not yet mention it to him. Allah (swt) said:

فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ

Fa laa tuzakoo anfusakum.

Don’t praise yourself. (Surat an-Najm, 53:32)

I am not praising myself, Grandshaykh mentioned something and that paper came into my hands after 50 years, and how many papers might be like that? If you have a paper like that in dunya, inshaa-Allah that is bara'atun min an-naar, innocence from Hellfire. If he said that, mentioning ‘Shaykh Hisham's love’ and ‘Shaykh Adnan’s love’, that means anyone connected to them will be with them on the Day of Judgment! That is not my writing, that is Mawlana's writing from something that Grandshaykh told him 50 years ago. We as mureeds of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim Adil have to be happy and honored by that greatness!

Whatever (bad things) people say, we are not responding to any of it. And all our people who love us and who love Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil, stop the arguments and stop this debate (of fitna). That is not going to change what has been written 50 years ago in Mawlana's handwriting (and opened now) to encourage all of us to be together as one hand in the way of the Naqshbandi Order. Call it whatever you want to call it: if someone comes and says, “That tree is an avocado tree,” and someone says, “This is an orange tree, or a green tree, or a yellow tree,” it is not going to change the function of the tree; the name is not going to change anything, but what is important is the al-lubb, the kernel. The shell of a walnut is the same and so is the inside, you know there is a shell and there is fruit. When you say Naqshbandi Tariqat al-`Aliyya, it can carry any name you want to add on it, no problem, depending on the culture, environment and people. Most important is to see something you did not write it out, that you did not know about it, and a statement of Grandshaykh (q) written by Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) 50 years ago on point #6 and point #12.

May Allah forgive us and bless us. Ee will inshaa-Allah bring that out one day to scan and give to people for the baraka of Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil’s handwriting and of 14 other issues in it.

May Allah (swt) bring us and unite us together, all the Naqshbandis around the world and every other tariqah, because they are the way to the Prophet (s) and from the Prophet (s) to the Divine Presence.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
