Love is Sacrifice

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

16 May 2014 Burton, Michigan

Jumu`ah Khutbah at As-Siddiq Mosque

(Du`a of khutbah.)

Alhamdulillah Who has enlightened the hearts with the light of iman and made us from the Nation of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! O Prophet of Allah (s)! You are our Leader and our Beloved and our Intercessor, you are everything in our lives!

Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah, wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadan `abduhu wa habeebuhu wa rasooluh.

O attenders! O Believers! Fear Allah and obey Him, as verily Allah is with those who fear Him and who are doers of good.

O Muslims, Believers, lovers of Allah and His Prophet (s) and his Sahaabah (r) and lovers of Ahl al-Bayt, those who gave their lives for a better future for humanity! They planted the seed of love and respect. They planted seeds of genuity and they are the Genuine Ones.

And Allah (swt) said, “You love Me?” Very simple question, “You love Me?” What you say? [Yes.] Yes. Why are we coming here?

Then He said:

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

That means Islam is built on love. It is not as they say, a cliché. Every time we say, “Oh! Islam is love, is love…” No, the reality is, if they are misusing the word that does not mean it doesn’t exist. Love, hubb in Arabic, is of two letters. In English “hubb” is four letters, in French it is five letters “l'amour,” but in Arabic it is two letters. That is a big significance for us to understand: hubb is to give and to sacrifice what you have to the other one; hubb is not to make enmity to anyone; hubb is to accept what Allah (swt) gave you. Hubb is tanazul li ‘l-aakhireen, to let it go from your hands to someone else, as not everything you want to hold and you cannot move right or left. Make your hand easy going. Make yourself easy going. Accept everything they tell you, you are not losing. If you like it do it and if you don’t like it keep quiet, then there will be peace.

So that love which Allah (swt) planted in every heart is of two letters, not 4, but two, and big significance in the meaning of these two letters, hubb, al-Haa wal-Baa. Al-Haa means “hayaat”, means “life”. It means Allah is telling us that you have hubb you must have a good life. And it came first, because life comes first, in this dunya, in this world, you come from the womb of your mother first, the life of that child that is growing up. That is why it came Haa first, not Baa, where Baa in front and Haa in back. No it came Haa, means that hayaat, that life you are going to live! 100 years, 50 years, 10 years--that life has to be full of acceptance and tolerance. To tolerate everyone. Prophet (s) tolerated everyone, he never said, “No.” How many times we said, “No”? Ask yourself. How many times we said, “No”? It might be every moment in our life our ego does not like anything and always says, “no.” Come back to the reality of sainthood and to the reality of spirituality, to the reality of enlightenment, to the reality of Islam, to the reality of Iman and to the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) who said, “I have been sent to perfect you, to make you to love everyone.”

Innamaa bu`ithtu li utammimu makaarim al-akhlaaq.

I have been sent to perfect the best of conduct (your behavior and character). (Bazzaar)

“I was sent to perfect you, to love everyone; I have been sent to perfect you in your manners, your behaviors. When I increase love in you, your manners will be good. When I decrease love in you, your life will be worse.” So Prophet (s) came to increase the love in you and Shaytan came to decrease love, because if you love you tolerate everyone, but if you don’t love except your ego, your self, your nafs, you will never accept the others and always you want to sit on top of the pyramid, even though it is going to harm you, you want to sit `uloow wa law `alaa khaazoo, is not? In Islam, la hayya fee ‘d-deen, “As if you are sitting on a cane,” because you like to be always on top.

Be on the bottom! The Prophet (s) was humble and he taught us humbleness. If you really love, the first part, which is Haa representing hayyaat, your life, your life that you are living with your people, Allah will then give you something more, the Baa. And the Baa in Arabic is the second letter in the alphabet, it represents symbollically, after Alif, which is the “A” in English, after the Alif , which is the first letter of “Allah” jalla jalaalahu. Baa is a straight line in front of the Alif, which is a perpendicular line, which means that line is alway in prostration to the Alif and the Alif is [representing] Allah. Baa symbolically represents the Prophet (s), `Abdullah, Habeebullah, Rasoolullah (s), the Best of Humanity.

So if you have the Haa, to increase the love in you, Allah gives you the Baa, which is baqaa, which means “ever-living,” you will be ever-living in Paradise and your grave becomes a rawdatan min riyaad al-jannah, your grave becomes a piece of Paradise. And for it to become a piece of Paradise you have follow what Allah has said, and I repeat the ayah, “If you really love Me, follow Muhammad.”

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:31)

“Follow Prophet (s), Allah will love you.” The Sahaabah (r), why did they become Sahaabah (r)? Because they had the honor, the privilege to accompany Prophet (s) and to learn from Prophet (s); they became his Companions and he raised them up. And what he (s) said?

Do not abuse my Companions, for by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if one of you were to spend gold the weight of Uhud, it would not equal a mudd (measure) nor half of it, of one of them.

(Narrated Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudri; Tirmidhi)

“Don’t ever dare to curse my Companions, because my Companions are the best!” They are As-haab an-Nabi (s); no one can be other than them, that rank is for them, where it also says:

أصحابي كالنجوم بأيهم اقتديتم اهتديتم

My Companions are like stars (on a dark night); whichever of them you follow, you will be guided.

(`Abd ibn Humayd, ad-Daraqutnee, ibn `Adiyy, ibn `Abd al-Barr, with unsound chains but the meaning is sound.)

“My Sahaabi are like stars on a dark night; any one you follow you will reach your destiny, you will be guided.” So they are the guides of the ummah through their ahadeeth about Prophet (s), what Prophet (s) said in his sayings. They guided the ummah to the right way. So it also means that anyone who speaks bad about Ummat an-Nabi (s) there must be something that the Prophet (s) wants to mention to us. He said, laa tasubu as-haabee, “Don’t curse my Companions.”

Are we As-haab an-Nabi (s)? I will summarize the hadith. [See entire hadith at end.]

When Prophet (s) asked his Sahaabah (r), “Who are the best of imaan, which group of what Allah created are the best ones?” they said, “Angels,” and he (s) said, “How angels, when they are in Paradise worshipping day and night, so how is their faith not going to be strong?” They said, “Prophets,” and he said, “How are they not going to be on the perfect way when they get the message, when Jibreel (a), Archangel Gabriel comes to them?” They said, “Your Sahaabah,” and the Prophet (s) said, “My Sahaabah are seeing me, I am with them, so how they don’t have faith? Their faith is strong.” They said, “Who then, yaa Rasoolullah?” He said, Qawmun ya’toona ba`adee. Qawmun ya’toona ba`adee yu’minoona bi wa lam yarawnee, “They are a group of people coming after us, after you Sahaabah, after me; they never knew me and they believed in me.” (Bukhari)

This is you! So what Prophet (s) says here? Laa tasubu as-haabee, which means, “Don’t curse anyone from the Ummat an-Nabi (s), try to make peace, try to throw Shaytan away.” Fawa ‘Lladhee nafsee biyadihi law anna ahadakum anfaqa mithla uhudin dhahaban maa adraka mudda ahadihim wa laa naseefahu, “The value of my Sahaabah is such that if someone owns a big mountain like Uhud made of gold, if someone has a mountain of gold and he spends it in the the Way of Allah (swt) he will not be better than one of my As-haabi by a madd (whatever the Earth gives of any kind of vegetable seed).” So that means if you own a mountain of gold and gave it as sadaqa and one Sahaabi (r) spent a seed of a vegetable for a poor person, that seed of the Sahaabi (r) is more valuable because he is a Sahaabi, better than the mountain of gold, and “the person who spent it” means, “don’t dare to speak bad about the Sahaabah (r).”

And the Prophet (s) said:

خير الناس قرني

The best of Mankind are my generation (or my century). (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi)

“The best of my people, my nation, is the first century, my century, and the century that follows and the century that follows.”

O mu’mins! I will not be too long, but we are in a situation that love has been like a frame: you write “love” nicely, as nice artwork and calligraphy and you hang it, and that’s what we are today, not more than that. The Sahaabah’ (r) times were not like that: love for them is sacrifice! We, Ummat an-Nabi (s), if we sacrifice, let us sacrifice for each other and let us build bridges with others and first build bridges with your family, don’t eat the rights of your family, keep together, unite:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold fast to Allah's rope and don't separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

Today the family of five is split into five and a family of ten is split into ten divisions with no more social ties, and the silat ar-rahim. Look at the Greatness of Prophet (s)! He always was yoosee, he advised the Sahaabah (r) to keep the family relationship, not to divide the family, to keep you together, to know your father, to know your mother, to respect the family. Now today that is no more, as everyone at age 16, 17 is saying, “I am independent.” In what are you independent? Do you want to be on the streets with marijuana, with injections and independent, or do you want to be from your childhood a devoted, sincere believer in Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s)? May Allah make us believers in Him and His Prophet (s), and with Sayyidina `Isa, Jesus (a) and Moses (a) and Abraham (a) and Noah (a) and many others.

(Du`a.) [End of khutbah.]

=========================

Related from Ibn Abbas (r):

The Prophet (s) was sitting with his Companions and said, “Who are the ones with the most imaan, that astonishes and stuns me?” He asked the Sahaabah (r), “Did you hear about them or can you figure out who these people are?” They looked at him and thought, “Who can be of the best imaan?” They said, “The angels, who are always under Allah's Order in everything; it must be the angels.” The Prophet (s) said, Wa kayfa la tumin al-malaaikata wal-amru fawqahum yarawnahu, “How can the angels not have strong imaan when they are in the Divine Presence and they see what they see? Of course they have the best imaan. No, they have imaan, but there are others with the best imaan.” The Sahaabah (r) thought some more and said, “If it is not the angels, then it must be the Prophets.” The Prophet (s) said, “How are the Prophets not going to have imaan when Allah (swt) reveals to them morning and evening and they hear Allah's revelation through Jibreel (a), who brings them the message, or Sayyidina Musa (a), who talks directly as Kaleemullah? How can they not believe when it is being revealed to them?” Then the Sahaabah (r) looked at each other and said, “If not the angels and not Prophets, then it is us. How is it not us and we are following you?” And the Prophet (s) said, “How do you dare to say ‘us,’ and how can you not have imaan when you are among the Prophet (s) and see what he is bringing to you? No, there are others who have the best imaan. The people with the most imaan are those coming after me, who believe in me although they did not see me, and that means coming after you, O Sahaabah! Those are in truth my brothers!”
