Do not Break the Hearts of People:

Seek Love and Peace, Allah (swt)‎ Will Defend You

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

22 February 2014 Jakarta, Indonesia

Private Residence

We must thank Allah (swt) for His grants to us... and we are honored to be among those who call the people to Allah, who go east and west, and in particular Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani (q) and Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani (q).

O brothers and sisters, it is a night of happiness. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. First we seek refuge in Allah from the hands of Shaytan and the traps of Shaytan, a`udhoo billahi min ash-Shaytani 'r-rajeem. We are in this house, Ahmad Deen’s house, where yesterday there was a very great joy, farhatan kubra, of what happened here of a wedding between Buddy, son of Sunarto, and Bapak Ahmadeen’s daughter Putri. May Allah make all your days joyful. We have to notice it was a joy, but that happiness is over now; it was yesterday, everyone was happy, everyone was saying something and eating and jumping and dancing, not dancing in the real meaning, but dancing in the heart. It was something extraordinary that people like and bringing two people together.

And Allah (swt) said:

وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ

W `atasimoo bi hablillaahi jamiyy`an wa laa tafaraqoo.

Hold tight to Allah's rope and do not separate. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:103)

That was a unity yesterday, but it is now over. But the farha, joy, in love of Allah and His Prophet (s) will never be over as our happiness cannot be except through the Prophet (s). He is the door that everyone has to go through; if you don’t go through that door you are miserable and if you go through that door, you are happy in dunya and Akhirah. We are asking, “Yaa Rabbee! We want to go through that door. Shaytan is playing with us to go through another door and we are struggling as we are weak!”

Our weakness is never going to disappear because we are human beings, and we are khataa’oon, we fall into mistakes. But there is a way out of it, it is what Allah swt has mentioned to us in Holy Qur’an. O Muslims, O Mu'mins! If you want to be saved, follow what I say.

Because we are human there is another way, another door, except to follow that ayah of Holy Qur'an. You follow it you are saved and if you don’t follow it you are not saved. So we say, “Yaa Rabbee, yaa Allah! Make us to follow that ayah, to make us in the meaning of that ayah,” and whatever you have of sins and mistakes and no matter how much you are in the trap of Shaytan you will be saved, because Allah (swt) wanted us to be saved! Our ego does not want us to be saved, but Allah, the Prophet (s) and awliyaullah want us to be saved. Every mu’min and every Muslim wants to be saved. The key is to follow that ayah.

I didn’t come here to teach you, but to learn from you. I am not claiming that I know something, but only that I am, inshaa-Allah, at the feet of our shaykh, our teacher and our guide, because they guide us to the meaning of that ayah, which saves us! So we are eternally grateful to them, because they are our guides, they are the way that we can be saved in dunya and Akhirah.

Allah (swt) said:

Man `adaa lee waliyyan faqad aadhantahu bi ’l-harb.

Whoever comes against My wali, I declare war on him. (Hadith Qudsi; Bukhari, from Abu Hurayrah)

So we don’t want to fall into the trap of Shaytan for arguing, as argument will extinguish the light of the heart.

Al-jidaal yutfiu noor al-qalb.

Argument will extinguish light of the heart.

That light is a precious light that Allah has put in the heart of every mu’min, believer. And we are followers of our shaykh, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani, may Allah grant him long life, and our shuyookh. Our target is for that light in our hearts not to be extinguished by Shaytan entering inside. So if we follow that ayah that they explained the meaning of, we will be saved. We are not coming here for eating and drinking, neither are you, as we can eat and drink at home. We came here to follow the meaning of that ayah and I am sure all of you know that ayah.

Sayyidina `Ali (r), may Allah ennoble his face and to ennoble us for the sake of Sayyidina `Ali (r), the Companions and the Prophet (s), he said that there are four principles that if you follow them you will be saved. We are going to follow these four principles and will come to the ayah at the end. I am asking everyone to follow these four principles, me and you, and all those around the world who follow the way of awliyaullah and the way of our shuyookh who taught us and are still teaching us, they are guiding us to these four principles:

1. Do Not Talk

The first of these principles is to not talk. People fall into mistakes and contradict themselves when they talk. When you open your mouth you fall into mistakes and then people will come and attack you from every side. It is said, in kaan al-kalaama min fiddata fa ’s-sukoot min dhahab, “If talking is from silver, then silence is from gold.”

Ma awqa` al-insaanu fee malakkatin illa lisaanuh. Nothing makes a person to fall down more than his tongue. As soon as you talk people know immediately what you are, so let us be silent as it is better. Is it not?

Allah (swt) said:

By the star when it goes down, your companion is neither astray nor being misled, nor does he say (aught) of (his own) desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him. (Surat an-Najm, 53:1-4)

All others may make mistakes. The Sahaabah (r) were under daa’irat al-hifzh, “the circle of protection;” so are the awliya and the believers. If we keep quiet, Allah will defend us.

Inna Allaha yudaafi`u `ani ’Lladheena aamanoo.

Allah will defend those who believe. (Surat al-Hajj, 22:38)

The Prophet (s) was abused by his own family, his uncles and his tribe came against him and he stood alone.

They said, “We will give you the sun the moon.”

He said, “No! Even if you put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand, I will not stop.”

We are simple human beings, but Allahu Akbar, Allah is Great! Allahu Akbar `alaa kullu man takabbar wa tajabbar! Anyone who is oppressive or a tyrant, Allah (swt) is overcoming him. If you keep silent, then Allah will defend you. There must be someone to defend you in a court. Allah is saying, “I will give you defense, don't talk. I will give you support.” Inna Allaha yudaafi`u `ani ’Lladheena aamanoo. Allah will defend us if we are mu'min and inshaa-Allah we are. Then if you are silent, you will get that benefit. So if we keep that silence, Allah (swt) will defend us, every mu'min and Muslim. We have to establish the four principles that Sayyidina `Ali (r) was talking about.

2. Listen

The second principle is to listen, as-sima`. First you are quiet, you don’t talk, you don’t say anything, but you listen; you may listen from anywhere you like, but don’t talk, zip your mouth, listen and understand. Listening like when someone opens the TV and hears that there was an explosion, can he see the explosion? No. If there is no picture, you can only listen but you cannot reach the reality as you are not seeing the picture. So if the fuse in the TV is burned, you cannot see the picture, you cannot see what kind of disaster and what kind of destruction occurred. Just like when the tsunami came, they said that it came and the ocean rose up and the wave came and took all these cars and created all this destruction. It will be quite different if you see it for yourself. You didn’t see all those killed by those who make an explosion. That is because, as Sayyidina `Ali (r) said, you did not reach the level of seeing, mushaahadah.

3. Observe

Once you reach that level, then you can see the real picture. You are quiet, focusing well, listening and observing with your eyes and seeing what kind of destruction has occurred, because of some people who said this or others who said that. So it is better to save yourself and to keep quiet, and Allah will defend you.

Sayyidina `Ali (r) said, “Observe, look and listen,” nothing else, [while keeping silent]. When you observe, look and listen, then you go to the fourth level.

4. Move

These famous Russian chess players hold competitions to play chess and sometimes moving a piece from one place to another takes 48 hours! They look at the chessboard, they look at you and then at the opponent. Zipping their mouth, trying to focus and trying to hear what the opponent is speaking in his heart. They try to understand the movement of the opponent, thinking, “Which one do I have to hit to shake him?” They may think this way for 24 hours or even 48 hours, then they move the piece. That is harakah, movement. Then you will move in the right direction. Shaytan wants us to fall by moving right or left. We try not to fall by keeping quiet, listening and observing, and then when we move, our movement will go in the right direction.

When someone calls for an emergency meeting everyone comes running, but no one says one word. They come to the meeting, they listen and do not talk, only the big general speaks. What do the others do? They listen. Then after they listen the order comes, then observe and put a plan! They put a plan of how they are going to defeat the enemy, then they move.

Our problem is we keep talking. If we keep quiet...but our problem is we keep talking. Listen, observe, put a plan! What is our plan? It is so simple. When you keep quiet, we go. When we say, “Keep quiet, listen, observe,” then we move. But where to move? Move to defend yourself? For what? Leave it to Allah, as Allah (swt) said, Inna Allaha yudaafi`u `ani ’Lladheena aamanoo, “Allah will defend those who believe.”

I am saying to the youth in their lives, and to me and to Shaykh Gibril that when it comes, it comes. Allah will defend those who believe! So where do we go? We run to the Prophet (s). “Go to the homes from their doors.”

W ’aatoo ’l-buyoota min abwaabihaa.

Enter houses through their doors. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:189)

Who is our home?

Fa firroo il-Allah.

Flee to Allah!

Betake yourselves to the Cave. Your Lord will shower His mercies on you and dispose of your affair towards comfort and ease. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:16)

When you run to Allah He will dress you and shower you with His Mercy. and He will arrange for you a way out.

Who is Allah’s Mercy? Who is that Mercy mentioned in the ayah I just read? It is Sayyidina Muhammad (s). Allah will open to you the door to the Prophet (s), referred to as “His Mercy” in this verse of Surat al-Kahf here. So when something happens, go to the Prophet (s), where He said:

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذ ظَّلَمُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ جَآؤُوكَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُواْ اللّهَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُواْ اللّهَ تَوَّابًا رَّحِيمًا

Wa law annahum idh zhalamoo anfusahum jaaooka f 'astaghfaroollaha w 'astaghfara lahumu 'r-rasoolu la-wajadoollaha tawwaaban raheema.

If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come unto thee and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. (4:64)

That is the ayah we were speaking of. That is the way. When something happens, Inna Allaha yudaafi`u `ani ’Lladheena aamanoo, “Allah will defend those who believe.”

“Ay Rabb, defend me. Defend my friends. Defend the believers. Defend the Muslims. Defend Humanity.”

And run to the Prophet (s) and make istighfaar there. I will forgive you. By making istighfaar before the Prophet (s) it means, “I will defend you.”

“I will defend you!” Allah says, “You go to the Prophet (s) and the Prophet (s) will make istighfaar on your behalf.” Then, no sins remain. Is there any doubt of that? Can there be any sin when the Prophet (s) asks forgiveness for you? All the sins will go. I will defend you by leaving you with no sins on you leaving you a pure person at that moment. Leave it to Me. We are leaving everything to you Yaa Rabbee. Guide us yaa Allah by means of our shaykh, Sayyidee Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani, may Allah grant him long life.

People want baab khalaas, the Door of Salvation. They want to save themselves, not to put themselves into problems.

Grandshaykh `AbdAllah, may Allah bless his soul, from his teaching he used to say, “Every sin that you make can be erased. By istighfaar, by salawaat, Allah takes it away, but only one mistake cannot be erased.” And this is the hadith of the Prophet (s); we will come to it. The sin that is so big to Allah (swt) that inshaa-Allah He will forgive also for it:

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

Qul yaa `ibaadiyalladheena asrafoo `alaa anfusihim laa taqnatoo min rahmatillah, inn ’Allaha yaghfira adh-dhanooba jamee`a.

Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah for Allah forgives all sins, for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat az-Zumar, 39:53)

But that particular sin has a condition. You make mistakes and Allah will forgive by you asking forgiveness and making salawaat on the Prophet (s). But Grandshaykh said there is one sin that is too hard to close it: that is to break the heart of someone. You cannot close it. It is not like some medicine you put it with glue, but that sin doesn't glue until you go and apologize to the one whose heart you broke.

This is what happened between us, around the world: countries fighting with each other, communities fighting with each other, races fighting with each other; everything fighting with each other.

So when we ask first by the ayah:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَأٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

Yaa ayyuha ’Lladheena aamanoo in ja’akum faasiqun bi-naba’in fatabayyanoo an tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalatin fatusbihoo `alaa maa fa`altum naadimeen.

O you who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, unless you harm people unwittingly and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done.

(Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:6)

If someone came with information, which might be wrong information, what is the first thing to do? Tabayyinoo, check it, verify if it is correct or not! That is the first thing. Check around with people or the same person who is involved in the problem. Check with him and ask him. fa tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalatin, “unless you harm people unwittingly,” you might say something different from the truth, then I will regret and you will regret and everyone will regret because we didn't verify.

And then Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur’an:

O you who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible) and spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No, you would abhor it.

(Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:12)

“O believers! Avoid breaking the heart of someone and don’t doubt by (spreading gossip) and don’t let doubt enter by listening to someone, and don't spy on each other.” If you are really mu'min, Muslim, cannot spy on each other! We are the same in tariqah, we must not spy on each other! We are a family around the world, we must not spy. We give advice, naseeha, where religion is advice:

الدين نصيحة

Ad-deenu naseeha.

Religion is advice.

And don't backbite; if you backbite you are breaking the hearts of people! It might be that these people have been oppressed. Be careful! Out of love, respect and diplomacy, make good relations. Don't leave that good relation that Allah created in people's faces. Everyone is created perfect in his appearance, they are created with the Light of Allah, the Light of the Prophet (s) and the Light of Sayyidina Adam (a). Allah sent His Rooh, His Soul in the body and that Soul is in Bahr al-Qudrah.

So Allah mentioned in the Holy Qur'an one, as we said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَأٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَا

O you who believe! If a corrupt person comes to you with something wrong, ascertain the truth unless you harm people unwittingly and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:6)

You have to check if a corrupted person comes to you with information check it. You have to check it.

And the second ayah:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّن وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ

O you who believe! Shun much suspicion, for some suspicion is a crime, and spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would abhor that (so abhor the other)!

Do you like to eat the raw dead flesh of your dead brother? Of course not - that is not nice.

So the Prophet (s) asked the Sahaba, man al-muflis, “Who is the bankrupt one?” and they said, man laa maala lah, “The one with no money,”

and he said, “The one who has no `amal (is bankrupt).” They said, “Even if he prays and fasts?” He (s) said, “Even then he has no `amal, because he broke the heart of someone with a gheeba, which is not correct backbiting and spread rumors against other people.”

Now you have to go to that person that you spoke about in order that he forgive you, and that condition might be very difficult. To say istaghfirullah and salawaat on the Prophet (s) is very easy when you do a private sin. But because speaking badly about someone involves huqooq al-`ibaad, the rights of creatures, you have to go back and ask forgiveness from the one you harmed.

That is the problem. Out of love I am saying this to myself and to everyone. Meet with everyone. Let everyone love you. We must not break the hearts of people. If two people have their hearts broken reconcile. Try to build it back. If three people, if a community, they have a lot of problems between them subhanallah Allah is making them to reconcile so cannot one-to-one reconcile? Shaytan is playing with us.

So what we have to do is to forgive everyone and to say, “O Allah forgive everyone” because if Allah forgives everyone then He forgives me. May Allah forgive us all, and remove that cloud, that is covering, everyone of us not seeing, that fog is making us not to see. It is not rain, and it is not snow that you benefit from, but it is fog that you cannot see.

Take that fog away Ya Rabbee so that everyone can see the reality and the truth and to benefit everyone. That is the message of our shaykh, the message of Islam, the message of Iman. that is mahabbatullah, love of Allah, mahabbat al-Habeeb al-Mustafa, love of the Beloved, mahabbat al-mumineen, love of believers, mahabbat al-mashaykh, love of the shaykhs; mahabbat as-saaliheen, love of rightesous servants, mahabbat al-ikhwaan, love of the brethren. It is not to plant fitna everywhere! If we find fitna, then let Allah defend us:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُدَافِعُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُو

Inna Allah yudaafi`oo `ani ’Lladheena aamanoo.

Allah will defend those who believe. (Surat al-Hajj, 22:38)

That is the recommendation to myself and to you, if you want to take it between you here in Indonesia, may Allah bless you with it, and you are the best.

In every country Mawlana assigned representatives who can take and guide people. Mawlana assigned on them very strong representatives. I am not going to mention names but each one knows his name in every country. May Allah bless them. Mawlana assigned representatives in every country that can lead the people. May Allah support them east and west, north and south, and may Allah swt guide us and guide me through his representatives, through his followers, through his mureeds, because we can learn from them more than we can learn from our mistakes.

May Allah forgive all of you as mureeds of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim around the world, and may Allah defend all mu'mins and all Muslims around the world.

Wa min Allahi t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
