Prophet’s Light Preceded All Creation

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

5 January 2013 New Jersey

Zhuhr Suhbah at Private Residence (1)

(...) Earlier in his life, Sayyidina Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (q) doubted (his faith) and to doubt means to think. In Islam it is best not to think too much. So that ayah is important:

فَاعْتَزِلُواْ النِّسَاء فِي الْمَحِيضِ

Fa`ataziloo ‘n-nisaa’a fee ‘l-maheed.

So keep away from women in their courses and do not approach them. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:222)

Abu Hamid had a brother, Ahmad, and he was older and higher in knowledge, so whenever they prayed Abu Hamid followed and alhamdulillah Ahmad led it, and everyone understands that is the way. One day Abu Hamid did not pray behind his brother and that went on for several days. Ahmad was wondering why Abu Hamid didn't pray behind him and he left it for some days, until people began to ask why he is not praying behind him.

Ahmad went to see his younger brother and asked him, “Why you are not praying behind me?” and he did not answer. Ahmad was older and more studied, so he had right to lead him. Finally, Ahmad went to his mother and complained about this situation, then his mother called Abu Hamid and asked him, “Why are you not praying behind your brother?”

Look at the principle observed here, sami`naa wa ataa`naa, “we listen and we obey.”. In Shari`ah you must obey the mother! Today they say sami`na wa akhflifnaa, “we listen and did the opposite,” even with their father!

Abu Hamid answered, “I cannot pray with him because every time he prays, I see him dipped in a ditch of blood.”

So she informed his brother of that and his brother came to Abu Hamid and said, “Why you are not praying behind me? I am not in any way associated with blood!”

Look at the difference between awliyaullah and `ulama: as soon as they perceived something they transmit it.

Abu Hamid said, “O my brother! Did you not hear that verse, Fa`ataziloo ‘n-nisaa’a fee ‘l-maheed? Every time you say ‘Allahu Akbar’ (takbeer in prayer) you are in blood, and do you want me to explain why?”

Ahmad said, “No, you don't need to say. I have been asked to give a fatwa about blood and menstruation and I am not able to compile it, so whenever I start to pray I begin to think about that.”

Abu Hamid said, “How I can pray behind someone who needs to make wudu?”

That fatwa came to his ears and for many months it was coming to his mind. So subhaan-Allah, the knowledge of `ulama is one thing and the knowledge of awliya is something else. Both are needed! Both are needed, like two wings of an airplane of which you need both to fly. Inshaa-Allah, Allah will open the hearts of His sincere servants, the lovers of Prophet (s), to give them more meanings about Holy Qur'an. It is not easy to understand Holy Qur'an and actually it is impossible. Whatever they have of tafseer is in limits. When Allah (swt) wants the real tafseer will come, so may Allah throw in your hearts the realities of these tafseer!

(Mawlana joins discussion with a guest, Shaykh Muhammad Ma`sood Ahmad from Bolton, UK who mentions several of his books to be translated into several languages.)

We pray for you for this work and this is very nice work! (...) There was one shaykh from Turkey, I visited him in Japan, and he makes business cards and puts his picture but not his name on the cards, and he puts “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah” on the top and then his phone number and email. He goes to the train station, thousands of people passing everyday, and he hands out his cards and says, “Read, read,” so they recite Shahaadah, which is written there and he says, “Khalaas, you are Muslim!” He doesn’t do anything else with them, and sometimes he gets phone calls from people who are interested.

I am going to UK and to the House of Commons to observe Mawlid an-Nabi (s) (for the third time). There will be congressmen and lords there. How many books can we get from you in England? (...)

This (picture on a calendar) is Aya Sofia (famous mosque in Istanbul) which, when the Ottomans opened it, was full of jinn that used to fly around in it and that was documented. Due to the magic the priests had done, those jinn were there and no one could change that until one of our grandshaykhs from Daghestan came and said, “I will do it,” and that is Grandshaykh Sharafuddin ad-Daghestani (q). He entered the mosque and put his shoes upside down to oppose the baatil, then he began to recite Surah Yaseen in reverse order. You know if you recite “rabb” in reverse it is “barr.” That is very difficult to do! And he recited the whole Surah Yaseen and then those jinns began to die one-by-one and fall down, and it was cleared out.

(Mawlana recites Shahaadah for a married couple.)

Now you must marry again because after Shahaadah it is new. Allah is addressing everyone that they must marry because marriage is the way that He wants for His servants and don’t look at whether they are rich or not, look at their good manners, both sides (husband and wife). Neither of you need a wakeel, and she is mature and was already married.

Prophet (s) said:

النكاح سنتي فمن رغب عن سنتي فقد رغب عني

an-nikaahu sunnatee faman raghiba `an sunnatee faqad ragha `annee.

Marriage is my way and the one who desires other than my way desires other than me.

(Mawlana performs the nikah and baya`; the ceremony is in English and then completed in Arabic because he says that for it to be legal it must be done in Arabic.)

Now you have taken Shahaadah and you are better than us as you are newly born. We have been born Muslim, so everything which we did is written. The good is from Allah, so no problem! The bad is from us. Whatever (sins) you have done in your life have been waived, you are newly-born, so keep this purity!

(Mawlana speaks to guest.)

Why you came here? Not for these books, these are a supplement, but to witness this Shahaadah and for us to make Shahaadah ourselves, and you said Shahaadah and everyone said Shahaadah. May Allah accept that Shahaadah! And anyone who says Shahaadah with a good niyyah or intention and he makes sins, Allah will forgive. Fatihah.

(Mawlana hands a book to the newly-weds.) Here, this is the dowry and cash is accepted. Bismillah. These are very nice books and you can in the future buy some from Shaykh Nisaa to distribute to people. There is a lot of light on your face, and you are sweating from your past life when you were drinking and doing whatever you were doing. Allah will forgive. Inshaa-Allah (you will have a)happy life.

(Mawlana distributes sweets.)

Alhamdulillah that we are receiving heavenly food! Pass them on one one and it is not accepted to have two, you must pass them on to everyone. For the children, never mind, they can take.

One person came to me in California; sometimes I live in California and stay between there and Michigan. One time a man came to me, and we used to do dhikr and a talk on Thursdays and Saturdays. Most of the people attending were converts. One time a man came and we were doing dhikrullah, remembering the 99 Names and Attributes, and he was sitting and listening. So he began to attend and he was 95 years old. We were doing dhikrullah, remembering Allah, and we prayed our prayers and he sat on his chair enjoying it, and I gave a talk. Then he left, came the next week again, we did dhikr and I gave a talk and we prayed and he didn't pray, and he left. Then the third week he came again and this time he stayed. He said, “I want to become a Muslim.” Ninety-five years of age!

He said, “Is there any way to become Muslim?”

I said, “Of course! Say what we just said, “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah.”

And he came the next week and we did dhikr and I gave a talk and we prayed `Isha and he prayed with us. And he said, “I want to learn the prayers.” The week after he came and did everything and he had a book and he began to learn the prayers, and this took like a month-and-a-half. Then the week after he didn’t show up and the week after that he didn’t show up. The week after he didn’t show up and I sent someone to check on him, and they said he had died. What do you think, did he die on Islam? Yes, and 95 years of whatever he did wrong was completely erased! And he was newly born for three weeks: he had taken Shahaadah and then he died, so it was as if he did sins of three weeks, if he did any at the age of 95, and then died, as Islam erases what came before. If someone decides to become Muslim, all sins he has committed are taken away. Alhamdulillah, most converts are lucky because half of their life is wiped from the books and there are no sins on them!

We Muslims, however, have to struggle to be relieved from these sins, but all of us have been promised by Allah (swt) and as the Prophet (s) said, mawa`adu waf`aa, “Whoever makes a promise must fulfill it.” So what about the One Who created promise? He is going give intercession to the Prophet (s) to intercede for the whole ummah! Our hope is the intercession of Prophet (s) for the ummah to enter Paradise with no question, for the whole of humanity to enter Paradise without question (the account on Day of Resurrection)!

So what is written in that book? You have to do this and do that, Islamic issues. If someone is lost, do you judge him or the one who made him lost? The one who initiated, the one who pushed him to do that act is responsible. There is responsibility on us (to do good deeds and actions), but the bigger responsibility is on the one who pushed (us into doing bad deeds and actions). Allah called Himself “al-Ghaffaar,” The Forgiver and “ar-Rahmaan,” The Merciful, and He promised that He is like that. So will He judge the ones who are lost us or the one who made us lost? He will judge Shaytan, the one running after people to mislead them, and He will forgive the one who is lost, but after He has judged him.

اَ يُكَلِّفُ اللّهُ نَفْسًا إِلاَّ وُسْعَهَا لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ

Laa yukallifullahu nafsan illa wus`ahaa lahaa maa kasabat wa `alayhaa maa ’ktasabat.

On no soul does Allah place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:286)

“Anyone who has done good will see good and anyone who has done bad will see bad,” but laa yunafiz amrahu, Allah (swt) will not execute His order, He gives the order that anyone who has done good will see good and that anyone who has done bad will see bad. The judgment is made and now it is up to the one to whom Allah (swt) gave the salahiyyah, the authority of intercession. So Prophet (s), the One with the Intercession, will not leave his ummah behind!

Today, people go to psychiatrists and they think they are going to recover by therapists or psychologists or psychiatrists. The psychiatrist builds his diagnosis on logic: “You do this and you do that and this results,” and then he checks what goes up and what comes down and they base their diagnosis on this. Psychiatry is one of the most difficult practices because like to real shuyookh, not the fake shaykhs, people come with negative energy and that energy will reflect itself on everything. Like they say to you during war, “Don’t throw chemical weapons,” because it will spread. And in medicine when you sneeze, how much of not only germs, but vapor, that mist of the breath, comes out of one sneeze? Millions of germs come out with one sneeze, and all that will go over everyone and will affect you medically and spiritually, according to that one who sneezed. If that one who sneezed is a bad person you will get a virus, and you will get a virus for your spirituality, for your soul. And if that person who sneezed is a good person, a wali, you don’t get a virus, but something that will dress your soul in positive energy.

How fast is the speed of sneezing? When all these small mists and viruses or good energy or positive energy comes, with what velocity do they come out? At least with a speed of 100 MPH it is coming out! That is why it is recommended not to cover it as it will hit you back and if you don’t cover it, it will hit the others. So that is the effect of sneezing. So also the effect of being with people who carry a lot of negative energy, you are going to get some of it; like someone who sits with a blacksmith one hour, at least he will get some sparks that will burn his hands, feet and clothes, or if you go to a perfumer you get a nice smell. When sitting with awliyaullah you get a nice smell, and when sitting with bad people you burn yourself.

Those with mental problems go to psychiatrists and they dump on him all their negative energy and that psychiatrist will find that he is very tired at the end of the day and has to go home because he listens to them, and half of what they say is from their imagination. The shuyookh are psychiatrists and they listen to people’s sicknesses, and those who don’t have authority, as shaykhs possess authority from one shaykh to another up to the Prophet (s), cannot carry this burden and it will affect them. That is why some fake shaykhs go crazy at the end because they are using the Allah’s Beautiful Names and Attributes in the wrong place or an ayah in the wrong place. And the poor psychiatrist is like that, and the doctor is the same, their power will be gone.

So our masters teach that as soon as you read on someone because of his problem, then immediately you have to channel out, as the plug has three connections, one is 110V or 240V, whatever it is, and the other is negative and the third is grounded to Earth. So when people come to see awliyaullah, they have a socket with three prongs: two are connected with the shaykh and the third is neutral and that is where the big shaykh who is behind him channels it to Earth. You have to channel it to carry it away or else you will get sick after a while. You have to immediately channel that energy away to water or to soil, to ground. If you don’t channel it away you will keep carrying it and that negative energy will add up one after one and begin to affect your life if you don’t channel it, even if you are a shaykh.

So we have to be very careful from whom we are taking, whether he has a channel out or not. If he has no channel out then we fall into the negativity of the people who come and listen, like in this association 100% people are good people. But there is a question mark: they are good people in the sense that they are coming to seek advice, and the speaker has to know he is not higher than them and he has to know that he is the first one in need of the advice coming from the big shaykhs, as Allah (swt) said:

فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ

Fa laa tuzakoo anfusakum.

Don’t praise yourself. (Surat an-Najm, 53:32)

And the Prophet (s) used to say:

اللهم لاتكلني الى نفسي طرفة عين ولا أقل من ذلك

Allahumma laa takilnee ila nafsee tarfat `aynin wa laa aqala min dhalika.

O Allah! Don't leave me to my ego for the blink of an eye or less.

Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) heard this hadith and he began to cry and he couldn’t sleep anymore. If Prophet (s) said this, “Don’t leave me to myself for the blink of an eye,” he who is--you mentioned one word, “intelligence,” and intelligence came from him to the whole humanity because we are created from his Light. It means the light is Light as all the lights come from one source and as Allah knows, what He created first is the Light of the Prophet (s) and from the Light of the Prophet (s) He created all Creation and we are part of that Light of Prophet (s). So how is that Light going to be dumped in Hellfire? Impossible! It will go back to its origin:

إنَّا لله و إنَّا إليه راجعون

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji`oon.

To Allah we belong and to Him do we return. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:156)

We are owned by Allah (swt) and we are going back, so where are we going back to? To Prophet (s)! We are going back to the main source of the Light where we came from, because Allah created us from the Light of the Prophet (s). He created the Light of Prophet and from that Light, check the hadith of Ibn `Asakir, that what Allah created is from the Light of Prophet (s). And still he (s) is saying, “Don’t leave me to myself for the blink of an eye!”

We have an eye doctor here, how many blinks per minute? Seven to eight per minute, and the Prophet (s) saying, “Don’t leave me to myself for one seventh of a minute!” One seventh of minute to myself! Today we are with ourselves all of our time. The Prophet (s) said, “Don’t leave me to my self for the blink of an eye as Shaytan might come and put his influence.” And the Prophet (s) is the only one with no place for Shaytan in his heart as Allah sent Jibreel (a) to take that spec away. So we are under negative energy, we are tremendously under the effect of Shaytan, (whether we are) `alims or common people. So where the Prophet (s) was saying, “Don’t leave me to my ego,” it means the `alim is also in need of saying that hundreds of times a day. And the Prophet (s), who is going to intercede for everyone, is saying that for the people to come back to the normal track, the Way of Allah and His Prophet (s), because sometimes we deviate.

I said yesterday that the Prophet (s) never said, anaa, “Me.” You cannot find a hadith that begins with “anaa” except one, because that hadith carries a lot of power that has been given to the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) was given all kinds of knowledge and, for sure, you know the hadith of the Prophet (s), “Allah has given me `Uloom al-Awwaleen w ‘al-Aakhireen, Knowledge of what is Before and what is After.” `Uloom al-Awwaleen w ‘al-Aakhireen, the Knowledge of Before and After: there is no ‘before’ to Allah (swt), for Allah there is no ‘after”’ ‘always’ is from no before to no after and there is no distance which these two words cannot accommodate, `Uloom al-Awwaleen w ‘al-Aakhireen. Since Allah has no ‘before,’ no one knows when Allah has given the `ilm to the Prophet (s). Did He give it to the Prophet (s) when He created the Prophet (s) on Earth, or did He give him the knowledge when He created the Prophet (s) when he was in Heavens, where the Prophet (s) said:

كنت نبيًا وآدم بين الماء والطين

Kuntu nabiyyan wa adama bayna ’l-maa’i wa ’t-teen.

(The Prophet (s) said:) I was a Prophet when Adam was between soil and water.

And in another hadith:

كنت نبيا وآدم بين الروح والجسد

Kuntu nabiyyan wa Adam bayn ar-roohi wa 'l-jasad.

I was a Prophet when Adam was between soul and body.

When he was first created, when his Light was created, at what instant was that knowledge given? When did Allah create the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)? Even angels don’t know as they were created afterwards. If Prophet (s) was created after the angels they would know, but he was created before them; the Light of the Prophet (s) was created before any Creation, so no one knows what Allah gave to Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and still he said, “Don’t leave me to my self (ego) for the blink of an eye! O Allah, don’t leave me to my self!”

Today we are teaching our children to say, “I am proud of you!” “Proud” is a big word in Islam; we can change that to say, “I am happy with you,” as you cannot have pride, takabbur, in Islam. Only Allah has takabbur: al-`uloow lillah, al-kibar lillah, al-takabbur lillah. That attribute is only for Allah and it is of His Beautiful Name and Attributes.

So however high the `alim reaches, whatever heights we reach we are still in limits as compared to the Prophet (s), and however high the Prophet (s) reaches he is still the servant to Allah (swt), and the greatness is Allah’s giving to His servant, which means to the Prophet (s), and to “a servant” is awliyaullah and prophets, like Khidr (a) and Sayyidina Musa (a):

فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا

Fawajada `abdan min `ibaadinaa aataynaahu rahmatan min `indinaa wa `allamnaahu min ladunnaa `ilma.

So they found one of Our Servants, on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our Own Presence. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:65)

Fa wajada `abdan min `ibaadina, “He found one of Our servants.” First is to find that person and Sayyidina Musa (a) was looking for that person. It means as servants of Allah and as human beings we have to look for these servants because He said, `abdan mina `ibaadina, servants; therefore, there are many. So our first duty is to look for one; if Sayyidina Musa (a) is looking for one, our duty is to look for one who is carrying that type of knowledge. “What did We give him?” aataynaahu rahmat, “First We gave him Our Mercy.” Without the mercy you cannot get the Heavenly Knowledge, and who is Allah’s Mercy? It is the Prophet (s). So means there is no possibility to reach any `Ilm al-Ladunni, Heavenly Knowledge, without going through the Prophet (s). So Sayyidina Khidr (a) introduced Sayyidina Musa (a) to the Light of Prophet (s) and that is why he was able to get that mercy and that knowledge from Prophet (s), because Allah gives to the Prophet (s) as he is the mirror of the whole Creation!

As Sayyidina Muhiyudeen Ibn Arabi (q) said, “The Prophet (s) is the mirror and when Allah (s) creates it will be reflected on the mirror and reflected back to Earth, so Prophet (s) is the reflection of the Creations that are in the Presence of Allah.” That is why they say that human beings who are on Earth are a reflection of their realities which are still in the Presence of Allah (swt) from the day of Alastu bi rabbikum. Qaaloo balaa, on the Day of “Allah asked us ‘Am I not your Lord?’ and we said, ‘Yes!’” We are in the Presence of Allah and our souls are pure and clean and reflected in the mirror of Prophet (s), to be reflected in dunya at the time Allah wants.

So `ilm might benefit the person or destroy the person. To benefit the person it means you have to apply it on your self (ego) before you apply it on others, then it benefits you. You are not speaking to people for them to hear you and say, “O that is a big scholar!”

Allah (swt) said:

وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَى مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاء مَّنثُورًا

Wa qadimnaa ilaa maa `amiloo min `amalin fa-ja`alnaahu habaa’an manthoora.

And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did (in this life), and We shall make such deeds as scattered dust (and throw it in their faces)! (Surat al-Furqaan, 25:23)

Because they want the fame. Allah does not like people to be arrogant. `Ilm might destroy a person or benefit a person. The Prophet (s) knows every one of his ummah and whether they are doing for Allah (swt) or not, because:

حياتي خير لكم تحدثون ويحدث لكم ، فإذا أنا مت كانت وفاتي خيرا لكم ، تعرض علي أعمالكم فان رأيت خيرا حمدت الله تعالى وإن رأيت شرا استغفرت لكم

Hayaatee khayrun lakum tuhadithoona wa yuhdatha lakum fa idhaa anaa mitt kaana wafaatee khayran lakum. Tu`radu `alayya `amalakum fa in ra’aitu khayran hamadt 'allah ta`ala wa in ra’itu sharran astaghfarta lakum.

My life is good for you as you will relate from me and it will be related to you, and when I die my passing will be better for you. (Meaning, “My death is better for you than my life, because then I can pray for you.”) I observe your deeds. If I find good I thank Allah, and if I see bad, I ask forgiveness for you. (al-Bazzaar in his Musnad)

That is why he is hazir nadhir, he observes the `amal of his nation: if it is good it is good and he praises Allah and if it is bad, he asks forgiveness for them:

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذ ظَّلَمُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ جَآؤُوكَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُواْ اللّهَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُواْ اللّهَ تَوَّابًا رَّحِيمًا

Wa law annahum idh zhalamoo anfusahum ja’ooka f ’astaghfaroollaaha w ’astaghfara lahumu ‘r-rasoolu la-wajadoo ’Llaaha tawwaaba ‘r-raheema.

If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come to you and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:64)

So we are asking Allah’s Forgiveness, and we come back to the plug for shuyookh, awliyullah, mashaykh: when they carry from people if they don’t channel it stays with them and effects them. When the psychiatrist or doctor doesn’t channel the negative energy away they will be in problems. I saw many psychiatrists come to my master, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani (q), saying, “O my shaykh! We face too many problems.”

Mawlana says, “What kind of problem?”

“Too much heaviness.”

“And what do you do?”

“I am a psychiatrist.”

Then Mawlana will give each psychiatrist a different wird or dhikr to do, and the main one is to when you come home in evening make wudu or shower, and then whatever you have carried in the day, send it to Prophet (s) or to Ka`bah, and if you have a shaykh send it to him because it will be easier as he sends it to the Prophet (s). And many don’t know that so their life is miserable. I know many who ask me for du`a. They have to channel it by letting it go, by having a grounded line, like if you have a short, that is a neutral line and will take all the power. Your shaykh is that line and he can take it and throw it away. May Allah keep us on the threshold of our shuyookh and bless them!

I explained many times, as we know there are 124,000 awliya on Earth, not just one or ten walis: it is on the number of Sahaabah and the number of prophets. And that number is mentioned in the tafseer of Surat al-`Araaf of Ibn `Abbas (r). There are 124,000 walis and our duty is to respect all of them, we don’t differentiate. If you differentiate and say, “My shaykh is better than your shaykh,” that is making fitna.

الفتنه نائمه لعن الله من ايقضها

Al-fitnatu naa'imatan la`anallaha man ayqadahaa .

Fitna is dormant and Allah cursed the one who awoke it.

We respect all shuyookh. We believe our shaykh is Sultan al-Awliya, but never mind, keep that to yourself as you cannot impose that on others. Everyone believes their shaykh is Sultan al-Awliya because he looks after them so well and we don’t have to involve ourselves in what Allah knows best. So we say may Allah give our shuyookh long life and the best life, to keep their good works on track, to take us (with them to Prophet). You know the train how many wagons or cars it has, might be 100 or 200 or 50, and the best one is behind the engine, the luxury one that carries passengers. What the first one can see the last one cannot see. We hope we are in the first one, to be with the Prophet (s) and to be with awliyaullah!

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
