May We Increase Our Love of Prophet (s), Allah’s Beloved!

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

15 July 2012 New Jersey

Mawlid Program at The Edison Hotel (2)

May Allah open our hearts for lovers of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and for Ahlu ‘l-Islam. Before we begin, I like to show you this. There is a bakery where they bake thousands of these biscuits daily, and the Name of Allah (swt) came on this one! Show that to everyone.

Alhamdulillahi rabbi'l-`alameen was-salaat was-salaam `ala ashrafi-`alameen wa `ala aalihi wa sahbihi... All praise is to Allah, Who has honored us with Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and made us from his ummah and on his threshold, and alhamdulillah, Who has guided us to Holy Qur'an and to the ahadith of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). And praise and blessings on you, O our Master, Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! He is the one who said, “My intercession is for the great sinners of the ummah.” May Allah accept us from His ummah and save us with his intercession on the Day when nothing benefits, neither wealth nor children. Look at us, Yaa Sayyidee, to purify us and present us with intercession in the presence of Allah (swt)!

Allah (swt) said:

Wa ’n-najmi idhaa hawaa maa dalla saahibukum wa maa ghawaa. Wa maa yantiqu `ani 'l-hawaa in huwa illa wahyun yoohaa.

By the star when it goes down, your Companion is neither astray nor being misled, nor does he say (aught) of (his own) desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him.

(Surat an-Najm, 53:1-4)

O Muslims! It is an honor for me to be here with you this evening and to speak to you about a subject that no one can give its full rights, the subject of Muhammadun Rasoolullah. Allah (swt) honored Sayyidina Muhammad (s), where the Prophet (s) said:

كنت نبيا وآدم بين الروح والجسد

Kuntu nabiyyan wa Adam bayn ar-roohi wa 'l-jasad.

I was a Prophet when Adam was between soul and body. (Tirmidhi)

Prophet (s) didn’t say “kuntu mursalan,” rather, he said “kuntu nabiyyan.” There is a difference. “An-Nubuwwah” is someone who can give prophecies, telling about the past and the future, while a Messenger is someone who delivers a Divine Message to the ummah, such as Sayyidina Nuh (a), Sayyidina Adam (a), Sayyidina `Isa (a), Sayyidina Musa (a), and many more, but none of them were present when Adam (a) was between soul and body.

“I was a Prophet before Adam was being molded into a human being.” That means he (a) was already a Prophet before Sayyidina Adam (a). A Prophet to whom? He was a Prophet before the soul of Adam (a) entered Adam’s form, and no one can deny this hadith. There is another hadith where the Prophet (s) said, “I was Prophet when Sayyidina Adam (a) was between clay and mud.” This hadith states “between clay and mud,” while the first one states “between soul and body.” And so to carry prophecy means Allah (swt) has already taught him from Heavenly Knowledge before the creation of Sayyidina Adam (a), and that knowledge is known to no one else. So from that time, Sayyidina Muhammad (s) was under the teaching of Allah (swt) through Divine Revelation descending on him, and he became a Prophet.

However, a Prophet must have an ummah, which means the ummah of the Prophet (s) was in the form of souls with the Prophet (s) teaching them on the Day of Promises, when Allah (swt) said “Alastu bi-rabbikum?” and everyone said, “Na`m yaa Rabbee! Yes, You are our Creator and we are Your Servants!” Who told them to say that? If we are a group here, we cannot demonstrate or speak if our leader is not here because adab is to have one speak and others listen. Who do you think answered when Allah (swt) said, “Am I not your Lord?” It was the one whom Allah dressed with leadership!

“Sayyidina Adam (a) and all other than him are under my Flag on Judgment Day.”

Who can approach the Divine Presence and speak on the Day of Judgment? Sayyidina Adam (a), Sayyidina Nuh (a), Sayyidina Ibrahim (a), Sayyidina Musa (a), or Sayyidina `Isa (a)? Or will all of them come to Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and say, “Yaa Rasoolullah, ishfa` lanaa!” (as written in a very famous Urdu poem)?

So the Prophet (s) is the one who answered on behalf of the ummah when Allah asked the souls, “Am I not your Lord?” Prophet (s) answered, “Yes, yaa Rabbee,” on behalf of everyone. That was accepted, as it came from the Beloved One. Allah (swt) says in many ahadith that the Prophet (s) was created from a Heavenly Divine Light:

رواه عبد الرزاق بسنده عن جابر بن عبد الله بلفظ قال قلت: يا رسول الله، بأبي أنت وأمي، أخبرني عن أول شيء خلقه الله قبل الأشياء. قال: يا جابر، إن الله تعالى خلق قبل الأشياء نور نبيك من نوره،...

`An Jaabir ibn `AbdAllah bi-lafzh qaala: qultu ya Rasoolullah, bi-abee anta wa ummee, akhbirnee `ana awwala shayin khalaqahu ’Llaaha qabla’l-ashyaa? Qaala: ya Jaabir, inn Allaha ta`ala khalaqa qabla al-ashyaa noora nabiyyika min noorih...

When Jaabir (r) asked, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Prophet of Allah! What is the first thing that Allah (swt) created?” The Prophet (s) said, “The first thing that Allah (swt) created is the Light of your Prophet from His Light, O Jaabir.” (Musannaf `Abdu ’r-Razzaq)

He is answering when the Prophet (s) asked what Allah created first, that Allah created the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). Does that Light that Allah created know everything or not? He knows what Allah wants him to know. Do you think Allah (swt) hid anything from his Prophet? He created His Light first and made him a Prophet first: would He hide anything? That is why when Jibreel (a) came to the Prophet (s) and this is a famous hadith, he said, “Kaaf, Haa, Yaa, `Ayn, Saad,” and Prophet (s) said, “`Alimtu.” And Jibreel (a) said, “Haa, Meem, `Ayn, Seen, Qaaf,” and Prophet (s) said, “`Alimtu.” He was reciting these Holy Letters of Holy Qur'an and the Prophet (s) said, “I knew them.” And scholars of Ahlu ’s-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama`ah say these are Allah's Hidden Names. The Prophet (s) knew them.

What are these names? When Jibreel 9a) said “Kaaf,” Prophet (s) said “`Alimtu;” when he said, “Haa,” he said “`Alimtu;” “Saad,” “`Alimtu.” That means Prophet (s) knew any word that begins with Kaaf, heavenly or earthly. Kaaf, “yaa Kaaf.” Some scholars say it is, “Yaa Kaafi,” meaning “the one who continuously gives until you say it is enough.” He can reach everyone with His Generosity. Yaa Kaafi! Yaa Rabbee, give us from Your Generosity. That means He can support anyone until that one says, “Alhamdulillah, thatis enough.” Do you think the Prophet (s) will say, “That is enough.” No, not for any reason, because he wants more for His ummah. As much as Allah gives, he asks for more! Yaa Kaafi! Haa, yaa Haadi! `Ayn, yaa `Afuww! Saad, yaa Saadiq! Yaa Saboor!

So Prophet (s) knew everything. When Allah taught Sayyidina Adam (a) the names after He created him in Paradise, Prophet (s) was already a Prophet, so to whom did Allah teach all of the names?

Wa `alama adam al-asma kullahaa.

And He taught Adam the names of all things. (al-Baqara, 2:31)

What did He teach Sayyidina Adam (a)? Did He teach him from what Prophet (s) was not previously taught? Allah taught from what He ordered Prophet (s) to give Sayyidina Adam (a), from what Allah previously taught Sayyidina Muhammad (s). And so He taught him a portion of the Names. And some say that there are an infinite number of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes, not only ninety-nine. Others say they are as much as the names of human beings, and still others say they are as much the names of whatever is in all creation! We say whatever they say, but we can think a little bit and ask, is that enough or did Allah give the Prophet (s) more?

When the Prophet (s) said, “Allah gave me `Uloom al-Awwaleen wa ‘l-Akhireen, Knowledge of Before and After,” meaning He encompassed all kinds of knowledges that no one knows, Allah (swt) then raised the name of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) for everyone to know his reality:

أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ الَّذِي أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ

Alam nashrah laka sadrak wa wada`na `anka wizrak. Alladhee anqada zhahrak wa rafa`na laka dhikrak.

Have We not expanded for you your breast? And We removed from you your burden that weighed so heavily on your back. And We raised up your remembrance. (Surat ash-Sharh, 94:1-3)

Can you raise someone without raising his name with your name? No, you cannot! If you raise someone, it means he is going to be seen. Or if I say, “praise so-and-so,” you might ask, “Who is he?” So when Allah ordered angels to make salawaat on the Prophet (s), were angels seeing the Prophet (s) or not? Of course, or to whom would they make salawaat, to someone unknown? The Prophet (s) said, “I was a Prophet when Adam was between soul and body.”

Many traditional scholars, from the time of Sahaabah up to now, say Prophet (s) was present in that Presence when Allah (swt) through His Divinely Power presented Sayyidina Muhammad (s) to the angels in order to make salawaat, and said, “This is My Beloved One!”

If not for you, yaa Muhammad, I would not have created the universes.

Allah (swt) ordered angels to make salawaat:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا

Inna-Llaaha wa malaa'ikatahu yusalloona `ala 'n-nabiyy, yaa ayyuha ’Lladheena aamanoo salloo `alayhi was sallimoo tasleema.

Verily, Allah and His angels send praise on the Prophet. O Believers! Pray upon him and greet him. (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:56)

Did you see any verse of Holy Qur'an wherein Allah said, “stop making salawaat?” or, “Now stop?” No! And Allah said, “Allah and His Angels are sending salawaat on the Prophet (s).” That means that the Prophet (s) is continuously in Ascension, today and yesterday, and when Sayyidina Adam (a) was between soul and body! His Ascension never stopped, and when Allah (swt) is raising him, he was shown everything! I don't want to say too much, then some people will not like that concept and say, “Oh, He is going too far!” So we have to balance that and keep a low profile.

But it is very well established, and Allah said in Holy Qur'an, alam nashrah laka sadrak, “Have we not expanded your chest in order to feel happiness? Didn’t We stretch your chest to make you feel happy and gave you whatever you asked?” Of course Allah (swt) expanded the chest of the Prophet (s) because he was not happy; he wanted more for the ummah, not for himself. Allah gave him and said, “We gave to you, but not only that, We gave you something more.” Wa wada`na `anka wizrak, “We took your sins away.” Alladhee anqada zhahrak. “That heaviness, the sins you are asking about, We took it away for you, because it was burdening you.”

Does the Prophet (s) have sins? (No.) So how is Allah saying in Holy Qur'an, “We took your sins away.” Of course, they are the sins of the ummah! The Prophet (s) cares for the ummah, not for himself. He says, “O my Lord! Wherever you want to put me, put me, as I am surrendering to Your Will, but save my ummah! Give them to me (saved) and I will be happy!” Wa wada`na `anka wizrak, “We took that burden from you, We forgave your ummah; for your sake We took all their sins, yaa Muhammad!” Wa rafa`na laka dhikrak. “And after all is done, after We forgave your ummah, to show you that, in fact, We forgave them before We created them!”

The Holy Qur'an is not created, it is Allah's Ancient Words; in Arabic it is al-qur’an kalamullah al-Qadeem, meaning (paraphrased), “Allah's Words are with Him.” Holy Qur'an is with Him and it is uncreated, but we are created. That is why in some schools of thought, not in the four schools of thought we know, but in other schools of thought, they say the Holy Qur'an is created. That is kufr and unacceptable for Ahl al-Islam, and who ever says that is Mu`tazil.

So when Allah (swt) says, “I expanded your chest,” it means it was before the beginning of time. “When I created you, there was nothing existing,” and the first thing that Allah created is the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), when there was nothing; no `Arsh, no Kursi, no Qalam, no skies, no earth, and hence, nothing! Allah created the Light of Prophet (s). Allah wants to show angels the Greatness of Prophet (s) and He ordered them to make salawaat on Prophet (s).

If you have a son or a student who excelled in class and want to show him to the other students, you say, “Look, this one took A+,” and everyone looks. Allah wants to show the greatness of the Prophet (s), so He said, “Make salawaat on him and don’t stop!” They are doing that since Allah's Order came, since Allah created angels, and don’t think Allah is not still creating angels! This moment and every moment there is creation coming and going. If you say His Name is “Al-Khaaliq,” then there must not be a moment in which He is not creating, or else His Greatness will be reduced, taqseer. And He is creating in every moment and every angel He created, past, present, and future, is under that salawaat order; he did not say the angels only in past, or only in the future, but all of His angels are making salawaat on the Prophet (s).

What kind of salawaat or darood? We know Darood Tanjina, we know Hizb al-Barr, Al-Fatih, Hizb al-`Arsh, etc. Which darood is Allah speaking about and what kind of darood are angels reciting? Is it similar to what we are doing? No, it must be higher. For the greatness of Prophet (s) and as Allah wants to show his greatness to all of humanity and to all creation, Allah made the darood of every angel different from the other; they are not the same! That is Allah's Greatness, `Azhamatullah, that cannot be a photocopy machine repeating itself. From one angel to another it is different. Also, when one angel recites salawaat the first time, do you think the first salawaat will be the same as the next salawaat? No, each one is different! Every angel is reciting a salawaat different than the one before. And this will go on until Judgment Day, or even up to eternity. There is no way to know these secrets, only Sayyidina Muhammad (s) knows them. Even when Sayyidina Musa (a) asked to know, Allah sent him to Khidr (a), saying, “Go to that person to learn,`ilmun ladunni.”

fawajada `abdan min `ibadeena ataynahoo rahmatan min `indina wa `allamnahoo min ladunna `ilma.

So they found one of Our servants on whom We had bestowed mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our own Presence. (al-Kahf, 18:65)

“There are too many of them in the ummah, go to that one, from whom you need to understand Heavenly Divine Knowledge. But before you can get knowledge, you must be dressed with Rahmah. We brought him (Khidr) Rahmah from Our Heavenly Side, to be able to carry `ilmun ladunni, as no one can carry it except by means of Allah's Rahmah.” It is “aataynaahu” “We have to him,” or “ataynaahu,” “We came to him with Rahmah and dressed him with it.”

w ’aatoo ’l-buyoot min abwaabihaa,

Enter homes from their doors. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:189)

Who is that Rahmah? At that moment, the presence of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) appeared to Sayyidina Musa (a) in order to learn and study the `ilmu laduniyya from Khidr (a). At that time he was able to learn. “O Sayyidina Musa (a) you want that, you must go to Sayyidina Muhammad (s)!” He said:

Qaala innaka lan tastatee`a ma`eeya sabra.

(The other) said, "Verily you will not be able to have patience with me!" (Surat al-Kahf, 18:67)

“You cannot do that, yaa Sayyidina Musa (a). After getting that Rahmah from the Prophet (s), I will do things that you cannot carry!”

Fa’intalaqaa hatta idhaa rakibaa fi ’s-safeenati kharaqahaa qaala akharaqtahaa litughriqa ahlahaa laqad ji’ita shayan imra.

So they both proceeded until, when they were in the boat, he scuttled it. Said Musa, "Have you scuttled it in order to drown those in it? Truly a strange thing have you done!"

(Surat al-Kahf, 18:71)

As soon as he went in the ship, he made a hole for the ship to sink. He asked, “What are you doing, trying to make hole for that ship so that everyone will sink?” It means, “O Musa! You have to sink first, you must kill your ego! You cannot say ‘I am Kaleemullah,’ because in Allah's Presence everyone is shaking! You must come to Sayyidina Muhammad (s)!”

Prophet (s) used to say:

اللهم لاتكلني الى نفسي طرفة عين ولا أقل من ذلك

Allahumma laa takilnee ila nafsee tarfat `aynin wa laa aqala min dhalika.

O Allah! Don't leave me to my ego for the blink of an eye or less.

Although Prophet (s) is the one who said, “I rode my Shaytan and my nafs. No one else rode his Shaytan except for me!” In the heart, there is a place where Shaytan can enter to make you shift away from Siraatu 'l-Mustaqeem. That ship is yourself; you have to make a hole in it in order to kill that self, then at the end there is a tyrant waiting and if you don’t sink that ship, it will take all and the ship with you. Here, the tyrant is Iblees! So in order for Iblees not to reach, make a hole and sink your ego! That is our duty. Today our ego is so big. Allah is teaching his Prophets, Sayyidina Musa (a) is Kaleemullah and Oolu ‘l-`Azham, the Five Great Prophets, yet Allah sent him to go to His Servant to tell him, “Humble yourself.”

What are our duties as husbands and wives, who at every moment are fighting with each other? That is because they are stubborn and neither side is willing to step on their ego, and neither wants to give up just a little bit of their right in order to keep their families together. So you must be careful. Sayyidina Musa’s ship had to sink, while on the other hand, Sayyidina Nuh (a) glued all the holes of his ship, which was a ship of safety, so any hole could affect his passengers. That means he built them up so they would have no ego: it was a ship of safety, while Sayyidina Khidr's ship was for killing the ego.

O Muslims! We cannot express, explain, or go into detail regarding the Greatness that Allah (swt) gave to Sayyidina Muhammad (s). There are hundreds and thousands of books in Islamic history that show the Greatness of Prophet (s). We are like ant in front of a universe. Who are we to speak on the Prophet (s)? We are midgets in front of `ulama and awliyaullah. May Allah keep us with them, keep us always between the Hands of the Prophet (s) and always in the Divine Presence, in order that we will be able to move!

Allah (swt) said:

Rabbanaa aatinaa fi 'd-dunya hasanah wa fi ’l-akhirati hasanatan wa qinaa `adhab an-naar.

O our Lord, give us in this life goodness and in the other life goodness, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:201)

Do for this life, but also do for your Akhirah. You must remember that your duty is not just to listen, but to strive for it as well. Raise your voice to your friends and teach them the love of the Prophet (s). Look at Christians, with respect to them all, they focused everything on Sayyidina `Isa (a); there is nothing for them except him. They made him the Son of God, they are clever. They say, “Son of God,” as they think that is the highest level, but Allah (swt) deterred what they said:

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

Lam yalid walam yoolad.

He begets not, nor is He begotten.(Surat al-Ikhlas, 112:3)

And Allah (swt) asked Sayyidina `Isa (a):

Wa idh qaal ’Llahu yaa `Isaa ‘bna Maryam a’anta qulta li ’n-naas ittakhidhoonee wa ummiya ilahayni min doonillahi qaala subhaanaka maa yakoonoo lee an aqoola ma laysa lee bi-haqqin in kuntu qultuhu faqad `alimtahu t`alamu maa fee nafsee wa laa `alamoo ma fee nafsika innaka anta `allama ’l-ghuyoob.

And behold, Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say unto men, ‘Worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah?’” He will say, ‘Glory to You! Never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would indeed have known it. You know what is in my heart, and I know not what is in Yours, for You know in full all that is hidden.’

(Surat al-Ma’idah, 5:116)

But Allah (swt) mentioned:

كَان َيَأْكُلاَنِ الطَّعَامَ

Kaana yaakulaani’t-ta`am.

They had both to eat their (daily) food. (Surat al-Ma’idah, 5:75)

It means, “How are they gods when they eat food and go to the restroom?” But they gave the highest station they could possibly imagine to Sayyidina `Isa (a), which is why their children say that their hero is `Isa (a). And now unfortunately when Muslims speak, they quite often say something that is unacceptable in Islam, which I have heard from many people, “O Jeez!” or “O Jesus!” They give it to you ready to pronounce it. If we instead say, “O Muhammad!” they will say it is kufr, but if their own people say, “O Jesus!” no one complains. I have never heard any scholar complain about it when someone says “O Jeez” in front of them. One person was debating with me on the Internet and during the debate he said, “O Jeez!”

I said, “Allahu Akbar! You are debating with me about the Prophet (s) and yet you are requesting directly from Jesus?”

We have to be very careful. We have to plant the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) in our children; don’t say it is haraam. He is the Messenger of Allah (swt) and the Seal of Prophets! He is the one who will intercede for you, your children and your parents. Allah (swt) gave all descriptions and titles to the Prophet (s), such as Rahamatan li’l-`Alameen, wa rafa`na laka, etc.

May Allah (swt) forgive us and bless us. Thank you very much for coming. I am not the one to speak in front of professors and those sitting in front of you. May Allah bless all Muslims and bring us back to the way of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) and his Sahaabah in order to follow and take away many problem and difficulties. Try to recite hasbunallah wa ni'am al-wakeel as much as you can and render your problem to Allah (swt). Inshaa-Allah Allah (swt) will make it easy for us.

Was-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
