Increase Taqwa to Safeguard Your Heart from Hypocrisy

Jumu`ah Khutbah at Maqaam Habib Nuh (1)

O Believers! Fear Allah (swt) and obey Him. Taqwa, to be righteous, is the title of Islam. Without taqwa religion is absent from the heart. Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ

Yaa ayyuhalladheena aamanoo 'ttaqoollaah wa koonoo ma` as-saadiqeen.

O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are pious (in word and deed).

(Surat at-Tawbah, 9:119)

Fear Allah (swt) and be aware of His Punishment and Love! All prophets on the Day of Judgment will come in the Divine Presence shivering, afraid of what Allah (swt) will do to them, and they will come to Sayyidina Muhammad (s) with all their nations asking for shifa`ah! We are lucky because Allah (swt) gave us Islam as our religion.

Inna ad-deena `inda Allaahi al-islaam.

The religion in Allah’s view is Islam (submission to His Will). (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:19)

That is an honor enough for Muslims, and to know that the religion before Allah (swt) is Islam. And what is Islam? There are millions and millions of books written on Islam. With all our respect to what else is written, Islam is simply obedience to Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s), where Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ

Ati`oollaaha wa ati`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

Obey Allah (swt). Obedience! So you cannot make a conspiracy or commit a sin and say, “I am obeying Allah.” Allah (swt) is saying, “Obey Allah, obey Me!” That means obey every order in the Holy Qur'an, which we have to do and whatever is forbidden we have to stop doing. Wa ati`ur-rasool, “And obey the Prophet (s).” People might ask, where in Holy Qur'an is it mentioned?

Wa maataakumu ’r-rasoolu fakhudhoohu wa maa nahaakum `anhu fantahoo.

Leave what Prophet forbade and take what he ordered. (Surat al-Hashr, 59:7)

Whatever the Prophet (s) brings you, you must take it and do it; that means outside the Holy Qur'an, whatever Prophet gave do it and whatever he prohibited is forbidden.

And so we are not saying we are perfect, but we must try and we need scholars to explain to us. Not everything we do is correct, and if we have doubt we must clear it up and have taqwa. And Allah (swt) is saying, “Fear Allah (swt) and be aware of His Love and Punishment, and be with His Friends.” Accompany the good ones, not the bad ones, be with the trustworthy ones, don't be with someone who doesn't know his religion and will give you many things that are not Islamically acceptable as it might be bida`, innovation. We have to keep our Shari`ah strict and pure.

Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunoobakum w 'Allaahu Ghafooru 'r-Raheem.

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Aali-'Imraan, 3:31)

Allah (swt) is saying to Muslims and to all humnanity, including non-Muslims, “If you love Me, follow what Muhammad says.” It means if you really love Allah, then follow Muhammad (s) and Allah will forgive you your sins. And what did the Prophet (s) say? It is very simple: “If you commit a sin, immediately make istighfaar.” Don't think we don't do sins; no way, everyone might make a sin in every way.

We cannot say that Sayyidina Adam (a) sinned and Allah (swt) knows best, but he is ma`soom, infallible. We say he ate from the tree about which Allah (swt) said, “Don't eat from that tree!” There is a wisdom in his eating from that tree, to show us that we are helpless by ourselves. If Allah (swt) leaves us to ourselves we might not follow Him or Islam, we might follow our ego and desire, which is not correct as it might let us fall into hypocrisy.

Ayata ‘l-munaafiq thalaath idhaa hadatha kadhdhab, wa idhaa wa`da akhlafa,wa idhaa atumina khaan.

(The Prophet (s) said,) “The signs of the munaafiq, hypocrite, are three: if he speaks he lies; if he promises he breaks it; and, if you entrust him with something he betrays you.”

The signs of a hypocrisy are three and you can see them around you. We don't want to be hypocrites and we ask Allah (swt) not to let us fall into hypocrisy! “If he talks he lies.” Now think, if we talk and it is lying, and the Prophet (s) prohibited lying, and many of us--perhaps not those here, may Allah (swt) make everyone here clean--but many people lie. Idhaa hadatha kadhdhab. And on the Day of Promises, we promised Allah (swt) to fulfill our oath when Allah (swt) asked us, “Am I not your Lord?” and we said, Bala, “Yes, truly!” and when we came to dunya, did we keep what we said? That is why Allah (swt) sent Sayyidina Muhammad (s), because you are an honorable ummah.

Kuntum khayra ummatin ukhrijat li’n-naas taamuroona bi’l-ma`roofi wa tanhawna `ani’l-munkari wa tu’minoona billaah.

You are the best of people evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)

Be united, and you are the best ummah sent to humanity, and you call to good and forbid what is bad. And the Prophet (s) said, “In the Signs of the Last Days,” la-taamuroona bi’l-ma`roofi wa la-tanhawna `ani’l-munkar, calling for the good and forbidding the wrong. People might ask, “It seems good.” Look at what Hudhayfa (r) related from the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) is giving an oath and we are saying, “Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah! We believe what you say without giving an oath. We are your lovers and your brothers, where you said, ‘I love to see my brothers, those who believe in me and never saw me.’”

He (s) said, “You are going to call for good and prohibit wrong-doing, and it is not far off that Allah (swt) will send on you punishment and you will say, ‘Yaa Rabb, take it away!’ and Allah (swt) will not respond.” Why? Because we are not supporting haqq and Muslims have to support haqq; Haqq is to live in peace and to put in your heart the love of Allah (swt) and love of the Prophet (s), but we are putting love of ourselves before love of Allah (swt) and love of our Prophet (s)! We try to do everything that benefits us and we don't care for the rest. And that is why the Prophet (s) said, “You are going to ask Allah (swt) to remove punishment and He doesn't respond.” So let those who have hearts and minds have taqwa.

Ittaqullah wa yu`allimakullah.

Fear Allah and Allah will teach you. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:282)

Fear Allah and have taqwa and Allah (swt) will teach you.

Wa `allamnaahu min ladunnaa `ilma.

And We had taught him a (certain) knowledge from Our Presence. (Surah al-Kahf, 18:65)

“We have taught him from our heavenly knowledge.” So the Muslims, we are inshaa-Allah good Muslims, but let’s continue the hadith of hypocrisy because we need to be away from it and to not fall in the trap of Shaytan. The one who has hypocrisy, “if he says something he lies,” and “if you trust him he betrays you.” That is a hypocrite, so we have to be very careful. We don't want to interfere with anyone else, but interfere in yourself and say to your ego, “Don’t put me down!” Try to purify yourself and reach Tazkiyyat an-Nafs. If you are trusted you betray the trust: Allah (swt) entrusted us with the Holy Qur'an, so read the Holy Qur'an! Inna ad-deena `indallahi al-Islam, and then idha wa`ada akhlaf , “If he promises something he does not fulfill it.” And too many Muslims do it and people around the world say something to you and you do something else.

We don't want to fall into the trap of Shaytan! That is why Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an:

وَالنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىمَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَى وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىإِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَى

Wa ‘n-najmi idhaa hawaa maa dalla saahibukum wa maa ghawaa wa maa yantiqu `ani ’l-hawaa in huwa illa wahyun yoohaa.

By the star when it is shining, your companion is neither astray nor being misled, nor does he say anything of (his own) desire; it is no less than inspiration sent down to him. (An-Najm, 53:1-4)

Allah (swt) is making an oath that whatever the Prophet (s) brings is wahiyy. We are coming every week to pray here and that is a sign that we have love to Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s) in our hearts. That is also a sign that we have love for our teachers.
