Speak the Truth: Suicide is Haraam

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani

16 May 2011 Lefke, Cyprus

Suhbah after Dhuhr Prayer

(Translated from Arabic)

(Mawlana Shaykh stands) Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahi ‘l-hamd. Allahu Akbar, on whoever is proud and arrogant! Alfu salaat, alfu salaam `alayk yaa habeebina, ashfa` lana, `inda al-mawla al-`Azheem.

O People! O Muslims! O Believers! Listen and obey the order. Listen to the order of Allah and obey it. Listen to the Words of Allah of the strong divine law that was delivered by the Beloved of Allah. Stand up in honor and glorification of the Beloved! (Mawlana Shaykh sits)

If Allah Almighty wants to make a donkey speak, He will make it speak with a clear tongue in classical language! I am a weak servant; I know nothing and I don't claim to be a scholar. No, I am a weak servant, but my hope is that the Lord of Power (swt) glorified be He, makes His Beloved (s) make a speech to the people of the ummah, from east to west, the ummah of da`wah and the ummah who accepted!

The Prophet (s) said, “O Allah! Don’t leave me to my nafs (ego) for the blink of an eye.” He is the prophet of men and jinn, who said, “O my Lord! Don’t leave me to my ego for the blink of an eye.” so what about the rest of Mankind? He also said, “My Lord taught me good conduct and perfected my adab.”

(...)

He makes known his message with the words, “I am the teacher of Mankind.” He didn’t say, “My Lord taught me,” but rather, “My Lord disciplined me.” (We cannot make progress) without good conduct. (First comes) discipline and then knowledge, as knowledge does not benefit (without discipline), if it were to benefit then Iblees would have benefited: he had a lot of knowledge but no adab. And he was proud of his knowledge, (previously) he was teacher to the angels, but he did not have adab. If he had adab, how would he break the law and disobey the Lord of Honor? Even if for a thousand years, we are obliged to worship our Lord in sajdah! (Mawlana Shaykh stands)

Shaykh Hisham Effendi, the highest, highest, highest, there is no limit to knowledge of the station of good conduct. With knowledge, Mankind reaches nothing, but with adab he reaches. If there are scholars among people and if there is a humble man who never sees himself as something, who makes his nafs under his feet, and his du`a is to ask, “O my Lord! Accept me to be a humble, weak servant with good manners in Your Presence,” the scholars were destroyed by their claims, their arrogance, and belief in their highness!

The Prophet (s) said, “My Lord disciplined me and He perfected my conduct.” The current ummah is in need of these words, and to spread them among the seekers of knowledge. Is seeking knowledge first or seeking adab is first? Ask the scholars which is more necessary: knowledge or adab? “My Lord disciplined/trained me,” and he (s) said from that direction, “O my Lord! Don’t leave me to my ego even for one instant!” This means that if a servant is left to his ego for the blink of an eye, then his end will be the same as Iblees’ end.

O Servants of Allah! Ask Allah to forgive you, “Ask for His forgiveness, for verily He was (and is) the Most Forgiving.”

In every time there is an understanding and for every understanding there are those to teach them the basics of worship. Whoever studies, must ensure that the results of his study are to make his ego accept that he is a servant. Don’t give any chance for any level of knowledge to lead to refusal of this order! All of us who studied anything, the first order is to keep our adab with our Lord, most High.

People have forgotten this. They don’t have adab; they have knowledge but no adab. And even if they fight other people, they are (also) fighting men of the ummah who are trying to teach them adab and how to make their efforts to discipline the ummah of the Beloved (s). But most people are the opposite of that.

That Prophet (s) of the last ummah said, “Don’t leave me to my ego for the blink of an eye.” O you who are arrogant! You who are stuck up, but you must be on good adab! Our Lord has disciplined and trained our Prophet (s). We are weak servants but it is obligatory when we remember His Name to stand and stand and stand and not to feel tired! Tiredness is from our body but it expands our chests and makes our souls joyful. Forgiveness is from our Lord.

O our Lord! Don’t leave us to our ego. If a human being is left to his nafs, he is either from (?) or from (?). (We know this) because of the story of Sayyidina Ibrahim (a). You need to ponder the people of knowledge. The thing that harmed Nimrod was when he said, “I am going to fight my Lord!” That is the same type of filthy way. And the same with Sayyidina Musa (a) and Pharaoh. When Musa said to him, “Make sajdah to our Lord,” Pharoah said, “I don’t know who that is.” And so crap on the heads of Nimrod and Pharoah, and on all tyrants in every time and place!

We are living in the time of fitna, which is now everywhere in the world without limit. The sad part is that the ones harmed are those going against the Muhammadan Constitution, Shari`ah, against the Divine Law and against Qur’an al-Majeed! And they have ordered me to recite the verse where the Lord of Might says:

وَلاَ تَقْتُلُواْ أَنفُسَكُمْ

Wa laa taqtuloo anfusakum.

Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves. (An-Nisa, 4:29)

Do not kill yourselves! That is a word which enters there. What is the meaning of it? This is an absolute order; it does not accept any interpretation. “Do not kill yourselves.” And do they think now that one of them indicates on the immense prohibition of someone without having killed anyone? The affair of qisaas (retaliatory killing, ‘an eye for an eye’) is something else.

Secondly, regarding the verse, “Do not kill yourselves,” either one kills another or he kills himself; (it applies to) either meaning. If one kills himself it is suicide, and that is haraam; Allah forbade it. And today in our time suicide became a fashion, and hundreds of people are committing suicide. Who gave them permission for that? Where are (the edicts of) `ulama and kings? Who gave you permission to believe that suicide is permissible? Suicide, to kill oneself, is from the worst of behavior, from the way of the scorpion; when it loses hope of escaping its enemy it kills itself, that is its characteristic, which is despicable and forbidden.

Ask for the fatwa on the topic. Why they are allowing suicide when it is haraam? Why, for what reason? Who gave them fatwas for people to carry explosive belts, to enter and kill themselves and kill others in general?! Is that Islam? With that evil, despicable forbidden action you wish to paint the honored religion of Islam. Where are kings and scholars (to stand up against this injustice)? There are none left, and Allah is angry with them!

I want to see a fatwa from al-Azhar, from Sham, from Baghdad, from Turks, especially from Pakistan, by which justice are they killing in general, and calling it Shari`atullah, not announcing it is haraam? If that doesn’t come, then one day they will be killed, not unjustly, but in the same way they are teaching or allowing, because the one who refrains from speaking the truth is a dumb Shaytan!

They became Shaytans, all the people of fatwa and Islam who are keeping quiet on the truth that suicide is forbidden. “Do not kill yourselves!” That is an important affair from the Master of all Affairs from Heaven to Earth! It came to me this morning to make it clear to His servants, to ask for their proof for what they are doing (suicide bombs). The punishment and curse of Allah (is on the silent ones) or else, if they want to escape from the punishment, they must not be silent! The one who is silent from speaking truth is a dumb Shaytan; they will be dressed on Judgment Day with an evil dress and they will be among the heaviest punishment as the hadith states, “The worst punishment on the Day of resurrection is for a learned scholar whose knowledge did not benefit him.” And that one will be going around like an animal walking around the well to pull water.

My Arabic is little, but I am asking from who are givers of fatawa, to make clear and not to fear from people, but to fear from Allah (swt). Tawbah yaa Rabbee, astaghfirullah. If they did not hear these words that are heavenly inspirations, for them forty days (remain), and after forty days there is no more life for them. Qaddafi (Libya), Zardari (Pakistan). And so either they take what I am saying or they will not survive. Astaghfirullah. Haqq's turn has come and they have made me address all the people of knowledge, from east to west. All of them are in danger up to Ramadan or to the end of Ramadan, if (they are) not giving that message and teaching. That (knowledge) came to me, that not one of them will live!

Let them teach (Truth), whoever among them fears Allah; we have repented! O our Lord, don’t leave us to our egos for the blink of an eye! SubhaanAllah, we are your weak servants. Let the ummah be saved from these evil ones.

Fatihah.

Suicide is haraam and whoever does haraam must be punished! The meaning is, they will get what they deserve. Whoever kills himself by any means--may Allah protect us from that--up to Judgment Day that person will kill himself in every moment: kill himself, kill himself, kill himself again and again. In Barzakh his punishment begins in the grave, by whatever means he killed himself or herself; they will do that to themselves up to Judgment Day. So be on good conduct, O Muslims!

Let the ummah keep the orders of Allah, The Absolute Power! So that is to wrap up that subhat. And they must be strong on that: no one may explode themselves; that will be his punishment in the grave up to Judgment Day! It is a warning to the ummah of the Beloved. That is one of the worst sins, to kill oneself and whatever method he uses to kill himself and others will be happening to him up to Judgment Day.

O Allah! With Your support, send us a king who will raise up and rule by the strong Shari`ah of Allah! We are fed up with those kings and presidents and leaders. Send us a king who rules by Your Rules, our Lord! O our Lord! Don’t leave us to our ego for the blink of an eye. Tawba, yaa Rabbee.

Fatihah.

Whoever kills himself by poison, gun, knife, etc., will be killed in the same way up to Judgment Day. Don’t think like unbelievers, don’t follow or accept their words, beliefs, or ways. Follow the strong Shari`ah of Allah (swt)!

Fatihah.

(Mawlana Shaykh Hisham: Masha-Allah Sayyidee. These are wonders and amazing.)

O Allah! Be Witness that I have given the message. Who heard it heard it, who didn't didn't.

(Mawlana Shaykh Hisham: And those who go out on demonstrations and are killed, is that in the category of suicide?)

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani: No, it is not. That is a different matter, where they are opposing falsehood and oppression they would die as shaheeds, martyrs, as they are in the middle of fitna.

(Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani: The prior Shaykh al-Azhar, Sayyid Tantawi, who was before the current one, made a fatwa that you may commit suicide, and then he changed it on the political order from above, and then rejected it again, and so on, playing with it due to politics. With that subject of adab and knowledge, you opened a new door! First is adab then `ilm. You cannot seek knowledge except with adab, in the gatherings of `arifeen, gnostics. They seek to be the most humble, that is the highest adab. That is why they say, “al-adab, yaa Huwa.” They don’t say, al-`ilm, yaa Hu.” You spoke for 45 or 50 minutes, Sayyidee. Grandshaykh was giving suhbat three hours with you. Your suhbat was long, Sayyidee.)

In order to translate it took longer.

(Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani: Grandshaykh did not give time to translate, he used to cut you in the middle of translation!)
