What Does Islam Say about the Boston Bombing?

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

23 April 2013 Lefke, Cyprus

Zhuhr Suhbah

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Dastoor, yaa Sayyidee.

Days are passing, nights are passing, people are passing, animals are passing, trees are passing. Everything is moving, we are moving and the universe is moving. They speak about energy, positive energy and negative energy, and they mix things together in order to come with some statements that endorse teachings of non-Muslims, in order to...without feeling that they harm Islam, especially tasawwuf, because real tasawwuf is to comply with Shari`ah, period. If people are going to get tasawwuf here, don't come here for tasawwuf, I’m sorry to say this. It might be someone else will say, “Come for tasawwuf,” but I say, “Don’t come for tasawwuf, come here for Shari`ah.” Build the infrastructure; Shari`ah is the infrastructure and the foundation of Maqaam al-Ihsaan is the state of tasawwuf, of perfection. You want to be-- everywhere around the world-- if you want to be perfect, then base your teachings on Shari`ah. Prophet (s) taught the Sahaabah (r) Shari`ah for 23 years. When he was in Ghaar al-Hira by himself. He was always in Ascension, I won’t say he was in tasawwuf, but he was in Ascension and from these ascensions you can get jewels of tasawwuf from his character and his behavior.

انما بعثت لاتمم مكارم الاخلاق

Innamaa bu`ithtu li utammimu makaarim al-akhlaaq.

I have been sent to perfect the best of conduct (your behavior and character). (Bazzaar)

How to perfect your character when you are already not moving on the right track of Shari`ah? If you want to travel you go inside a plane and if you want to speak on tasawwuf it is no problem, but outside the plane is moving by the law of physics by Allah’s order, so it means the plane is the Shari`ah. You cannot take a plane and it goes left and right, left and right, so tasawwuf can be when you are in the right destination, in the right movement of the plane. Inside the plane shows your good manners, and first you need Shari`ah, Shari`atullah. That is why Imam Malik (r) said, “Tasawwuf without Shari`ah is corruption, heretical, but tasawwuf with Shari`ah is Haqiqa, reality.” If you want reality, follow Shari`ah. Shari`ah tells you not to be angry, do your prayers, do not yell at anyone and keep the rights of people. Tasawwuf doesn't include the rights of human beings, tasawwuf includes how you can be perfect, for you to have good manners, but Shari`ah makes you to have good relationships with everyone.

Laa tatalal al-hudood, Shari`ah says you cannot transgress the borders of the limits of people. If I get upset with him and we fought with each other and I oppressed him, then I am the oppressor and he is oppressed. On the Day of Judgment, Allah is going to say, “Forgive him,” and he is going to say, “No (I won’t forgive the one who oppressed me).” It is a hadith of Prophet (s):

`an Abi Hurayrah (r) anna rasoolullahi (s) qaala atradoona maa al-muflis? Qaaloo al-muflis feenaa man laa dirham lahu wa laa mataa`. Faqaala inna’l-muflis min ummatee man yaatee yawm al-qiyamati bi-salaatin wa siyaamin wa zakaatin wa yaatee wa qad shatama hadhaa wa qadhafa hadhaa wa akala maala hadhaa wa safaka dam hadhaa wa daraba hadhaa fa-yu`tee hadhaa min hasanaatihi fa in fanayta hasanaatahu qabl an yuqdaa maa `alayhi aakhadha min khataayaahum faturihat `alayhi thumma turiha fi ’n-naar.

The Prophet (s) said:

Do you know who the muflis (bankrupt one) is? The muflis from my Ummah is one who comes on the Day of Judgment having performed prayer, fasting, and giving zakaat. However, along with all of this, he abused this person and slandered that person, ate the wealth of this person and unlawfully spilled the blood of that person. These people will take from his good deeds. If, however, his good deeds become exhausted, then their sins will be put upon him and he will be thrown into the Fire. (Muslim and Tirmidhi)

Prophet (s) said, “Who is bankrupted, the one poor?”

They said, “The one who has no money.”

Prophet (s) said, “No, the one that has no `amal.”

They said, “Even if he prays and fasts?”

He said, “Even if he prays and fasts, he has no `amal,” because on the Day of Judgment, the oppressed one will not forgive the oppressor. Allah will take the good `amal from the oppressor and give to the oppressed so he will be left with no `amal, he will have nothing, although they might have been crumbs of hasanaat but not too many and still he took them.

Allah will say, “Forgive him.”

The oppressed one will say, “Yaa Rabbee, it’s not enough,” then Allah will take from sins of the oppressed and give them to the oppressor and so he doubles his punishment!

Then all your prayers and fasting are gone. So we have to build a good foundation and today there are too many slaps on faces of Muslims from actions that they didn't do or from harming others. A few irresponsible people have been brainwashed, like many non-Muslims have been brainwashed and they go and kill children in schools, not only Muslims, but Christians. How many (incidents) have happened? Non-Muslims are killing children in schools, so why do we have to harass Muslims and blame Muslims for something they didn't do? We have to be balancing everything, responsible people must balance, they must have a jewelry balance, a digital scale, not seeing someone with a beard or wearing sunnah clothes and calling them terrorists around the world, not just in one place. We openly condemn the actions of five or six people compared to 1.5 billion Muslims, in comparison it is nothing, it is epsilon, as if they (1.5 billion lawful Muslims) are not existing, and then Islam is blamed for it! You cannot. We have to be fair, which is mentioned in the hadith of Prophet (s) in Sahih Muslim. Fairness is based on Shari`ah and that will give you an explanation before you blame anyone. You are blaming people that had nothing to do with it, harassing them in schools and in public areas, and you have to be very careful.

فَاسْأَلُواْ أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Fas’aloo ahli ‘dh-dhikri in kuntum laa ta`lamoon.

So ask the People of the Message if you do not know.(Surat an-Nahl, 16:43)

Ask the people who know, not the ones that don't know! Don’t ask the wrong people, it is a duty on the politicians and people in government to ask the right people. Allah said in Holy Qur’an, “Ask the right people,” because not everyone knows. You are going and asking some organizations who don’t know anything or they might benefit from something so they don’t give you the right answer. The right answer is in the hadith of Prophet (s):

The first of people against whom Judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favors and he will recognize them. (The Almighty) will say, “And what did you do about them?” He will say, “I fought for you until I died a martyr.” He will say, “You have lied! You did but fight that it might be said (of you), ‘He is courageous,’ and so it was said.” Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hellfire!

(Another) will be a man who has studied (religious) knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Qur’an. He will be brought and Allah will make known his His favors and he will recognize them. (The Almighty) will say, “And what did you do about them?” He will say. “I studied (religious) knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Qur’an for Your sake.” He will say, “You have lied! You did but study (religious) knowledge that it might be said (of you), ‘He is learned,’ and you recited the Qur’an that it might be said (of you), ‘He is a reciter,’ and so it was said.” Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hellfire!

(Another) will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make known his His favors and he will recognize them. (The Almighty) will say, “And what did you do about them?” He will say, “I left no path (untrodden) in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake!” He will say, “You have lied! You did so that it might be said (of you), ‘He is open-handed,’ and so it was said.” Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hellfire!"

(Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasaa'ee)

Prophet (s) said, “On the Day of Judgment, Allah will judge three groups of people and the first group is martyrs.” What do you know about a martyr here? They go to Paradise, (which is a) general belief. This hadith that I am mentioning now was in the book Ad-Dawaa ash-Shaafee written by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, a student of Ibn Taymiyya, from their own sources. They cannot say that hadith is incorrect as it is authenticated by them, and mentioned in Sahih Muslim. The first to be judged is a martyr and everyone says they are going where? Say it! (To Paradise.) Allah calls one of them and He shows him all the favors He is providing for him and He asks, “What did you do for Me to give you all these favors that I wrote for you?”

Allah is asking. Can you lie? You can't lie!

This young one, a teenager or a mature adult or elderly old man or woman will say, “Yaa Rabbee! I did good for Your cause.”

Allah will ask, “What did you do?”

“I went for jihad!”

You can do your homework and go to the book Ad-Dawaa ash-Shaafee of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, student of Ibn Taymiyya, which has been printed in many countries and you can find that hadith.

That one will say, “I did everything for You.”

Allah (swt) will say, “What did you do?”

“ I killed myself for You, I blew myself up for You and I killed so many in jihad!”

Allah (swt) will ask, “Who did you kill? Did you kill innocent people or your enemy?”

“I don’t know who I killed, I killed many.”

Is that jihad, not to know your enemy? In the time of Prophet (s), you had to know your enemy, you must fight them face to face. Prophet (s) never allowed anyone to fight in their back, only face to face! Those who fought against Prophet (s) and those who fought with Prophet (s) were facing each other. They knew each other and they wore different clothes in order to know their enemy.

What are you ‘martyrs’ dressing in? Are you dressing in Italian or western or tight clothes and you are saying, “I am fighting for Allah (swt),” or are you wearing loose (modest) clothes and saying, “We are jihadists and we are fighting for Allah (swt).” No, you are going from the back, hidden, and you do things and run away. Why are you running away? Are you cowardly, like a rabbit? So why did you kill and run away? (You must) face whom you killed, is it not? Why did you run away, I don’t understand. Since you are fighting for Allah, don’t run away! It means your fight is not correct and what you are doing is not correct. It is mentioned by Prophet (s).

Allah will ask you, “What you did for Me?” Do you say to Him, “I blew up innocent people and ran away.” So the answer in the hadith says, “Yaa Rabbee, I fought for Your cause, I fought for You.” What will Allah say, ahsaan, “good `amal,” or “good jihad,” mashaa-Allah? What will Allah say to him? “Kadhdhaab, you are a liar! Kadhdhaab, you are lying to Me!”

“Yaa Rabbee! I am not lying, I am saying the truth.”

You are lying! That is not the action of a jihadi, which means “one that struggles for Allah's cause.” That is `amal (an act) for your ego.” Allah says to him, “You did this for yourself, not for Me, for people to say you are courageous, to tell people that you did it in order for people to clap (applaud) for you and speak about you around the whole world, ‘O! This one did a very good job.’ That is not for Allah, it is for you, for people to mention your name!”

That is exactly what Prophet (s) said, exactly, no doubt, as he said in a hadith, “They will announce themselves that they did it for Allah (swt), but they did it for their egos.” Where did these two people go, into crowds of innocent people in Boston and blew them up? What kind of action they did before that? They put on Facebook praising themselves, for people to know about them! If you are doing it for Allah, why did you put it on Facebook, for people to say you are good? So it means you are doing this for fame. Don’t do anything for yourself, do it for Allah (swt)! So Allah is saying, “You are a liar! O My angels, take him and throw him in Hellfire.” Angels will take him and throw him where? To Hellfire! This is for whom? For a martyr, whom everyone thinks is going to Jannah, but Allah (swt) sends him to Hellfire (for that false act), although not all of them. We are speaking about those who kill innocents, who blow themselves up, not enemies fighting enemies, like in the time and after the time of Prophet (s), not throwing rockets on those on whose head they don’t know it is coming, on innocent people!

Today all the war in the world is not Islamic. Anywhere around the world it is not really Islamic, it is only for “the chair,” they fight with each other to sit on the chair. If they fight and kill each other, we know they are killing each other and we say, “Okay, they are killing each other,” but when innocent people are being killed by rockets that you don’t know where they will fall, then they are not just killing each other but they are killing the people who are innocent! So what will Allah say? “Take him to Hellfire.” Today martyrs are not real martyrs. Those who are calling themselves martyrs are not, they are working for Shaytan. I am saying this, and I know this is going to go everywhere, but I am saying it, that they are working for Shaytan because they killed innocent people who had nothing to do with any of this. Children!

They found another group in Canada now that was trying to blow up the train station between Toronto and Montreal last night. One is named “Jasser” and the other one is named “Shuhaib Sagheer.” They are Arabs, (trying to) blow up a train. How many people would have died? For what? These are innocent people who have nothing and they are going to their work, and it might be there are Muslims on that train or Christians or Jews! Why do you want to kill them? Everyone is free with his religion: if you are a Muslim you are a Muslim and if he is a Christian he is a Christian. Why are you interfering? When Prophet (s) entered Madinah, he lived peacefully with Christians and Jews. The Charter of Madinah is very well known. So Islam is against pseudo-jihadists killing the innocent. Prophet (s) never did that! Prophet (s) lived with everyone. There were misunderstandings, but they lived with everyone. Everyone is free with their religion according to the Declaration of Madinah. Go back to the Declaration of Madinah, go back to where Prophet (s) mentioned fighting. They were fighting against Prophet (s) and he had to answer them, but Prophet (s) never allowed to kill anyone.

Once when they had prisoners, the Sahaabah (r) came to Prophet (s) and asked, “Yaa Rasoolullah! We have prisoners. What should we do with them?”

He said, “Free them, they can teach our people how to read and write,” because the people of Yemen knew how to write. And he said, “Let them teach our children how to read and write and they will be set free.”

Look (at the importance on) education. Prophet (s) wants people to be educated and wants them to integrate, not segregate. Now today what do they do? They are making Muslims segregate because of these people killing and making people be against Muslims.

So the second group Allah will judge is another one who did good. He calls a generous one and asks, “What did you do to get My favors, what I have for you?”

He will answer, “Yaa Rabbee! I gave to hospitals and schools and to this and that.”

Allah says, “Are you sure you did this for Me or was it for your name to be written in schools and hospitals? Is it for Me or for your own benefit, for your name to be raised and so people will say, ‘O look, that person gave,’ for your desire to be happy? O My angels! He is lying, take him to Hellfire!”

So it means don’t be a generous person if, wa laa tumanin, “Don’t think you are doing a favor for Allah as this is Allah’s money and by His generosity He gave it to you, so don’t think you are doing Him a favor! Do not give with the intention for your name to be written everywhere. (For your donation) they write, “muhsin kabeer, the big generous one.” No, hide yourself.

The third one is someone, and it applies to many people, the `ulama, scholars and academicians. Allah (swt) will call them and they will they have knowledge, and He asks, “What did you do to deserve these favors?”

They will answer, “Yaa Rabbee, we spread Shari`ah.”

Alhamdulillah that is good, but you did it to show your name or for Allah? You are liars, as you are doing this for your name to be high so that it may be written everywhere, “He is a doctor.” Doctors are those who study medicine. They write their title as “Dr.” and now they want to put it in front of every scholar’s name. Why does he want to show he is a doctor, why? Be simple, say, “I am an `abd, a servant, I am nothing.” Did you see Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) put the title “Dr.” in front of his name, or “Sultan al-Awliya”? Never! I always heard him say, “I am zero.” We say he is Sultan al-Awliya. Grandshaykh `AbdAllah (q) never mentioned that for himself and he passed away, but 10-15 years before he said that Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) is Sultan al-Awliya. He exposed Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, which is correct, but Mawlana Shaykh doesn’t say this. He never claimed to be Sultan al-Awliya, but in reality he is. They don’t feel it appropriate to say in front of Prophet (s) because they are shy.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) never said, “I am a doctor,” or, “I have a Bachelor’s degree in tasawwuf or Shari`ah.” He always says, “I want falsehood to be under my feet!” Everyone can say, “I want kufr to be under my feet!” but we say it in imitation and he says it in reality! O Muslims! Be careful.

So Allah says to these scholars, “You did that for your own name, not for My Name.” They come on the TV, you see these talk shows, and they say, “Dr. so-and-so, head of the Muslim scholars around the world.” Who? Why (praise so much)? I was once in a country where we held a conference and I invited a scholar, a rector of an Islamic university, to come and give a lecture. I wanted to confirm his attendance, so two days before I asked someone to contact his secretary, and they said he is not coming. How is he not coming? The Vice-President was coming, the Speaker of the House was coming, all these political people were coming, so why was he not coming, what changed?

They said, “You did not give him the correct titles.”

“How did we not give him the right title? We put his name and wrote ‘Dr.’ in the beginning, followed by ‘PhD.’”

They said, “No, it’s not enough! You have to mention, ‘Dr.,’ ‘Professor,’ ‘PhD,’ then at the end all his degrees that he got in his life (like ten of them), saying, “You have to mention them or else he will not come.”

Then we had to send the invitation another time with all his titles, in order that he would come and give a lecture for 45 minutes or half-an-hour. Prophet (s) sat on the floor with his Sahaabah (r)! Even he saw non-Muslims coming to him and he was sitting on the floor, welcoming them.

The Emperor of al-Habash, Abbysinia, sent him gifts: of one doctor, one lady jaariyah to help, and one donkey. He kept the donkey and the maid-servant to help and sent back the doctor, saying, “We need the donkey to get the wood and carry it, and we need the lady to cook for the guests.” But he didn’t take the doctor, which means, “We are people who surrender to Allah (swt). When we are sick, sick. If we find medicine alhamdulillah and we take it. If we don’t find, we say, ‘Yaa Rabbee, Anta ’sh-Shaafee, ishfeenee yaa Allah!’” Will Allah not respond? If He wants to give you shifaa’ He will give.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) was going and came back because of du`a of ash-shifaa’, he was praying for shifaa’ and everyone around the world was praying for him for shifaa’, and Allah accepted. Those are awliyaullah! They deserve to put in front of their name, “Sultan al-Awliya,” but these scholars I am mentioning, Allah says, “You are liars! You didn’t want to attend the conference to speak about Islam, you are the head of the university of Islam where you want your titles to be first, which means you are doing this for your titles, you are not doing this for Allah (swt).”

Today is a different lecture, tajalli jalaal today, the manifestation of Divine Majesty, because too much has been going on these two days and we have to be very careful. Allah send these scholars who work for their names to be high, and I am saying they are not doing enough, hatta yu’ayyidu ’l-Muslimeen, they are not doing enough to work with officials in order to make sure to send a message to the whole world that we are working to show that Muslims and Islam have nothing to do with that (terrorism)! You have to do it officially, not only writing some condemnations on paper, no. You are getting money from around the world, your organizations in Europe and America, in the West, you are getting the money from the Gulf countries, you are getting millions and millions and millions of dollars and you are pocketing that money, putting it in your pockets and you are not doing enough! You are liars! Allah (swt) will take you to Hellfire if you keep doing this yourself. Don’t make the Muslims blamed! Officials want to hear a word from you all. If you don’t give that word for them, then everyone is in a problem.

May Allah forgive us! May Allah bless us!
