The Path of Sufism is the Path of Great Struggle

Ramadan Series 2014, Volume 7

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

5 July 2014 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaadah, nawaytu 's-sulook, lillahi ta`alaa fee haadha 'l-masjid.

Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh, to those who are present and those who are watching us from far away. It is not easy to put one whole book into some sessions to explain it; when you need to explain a book, it might take years. What do you think about explaining your nafs, how long is it going to take? How many bad behaviors you have to research and study them and eliminate the bad ones and keep the good ones? It is not easy, it is a very big struggle, but if you choose this road it is the road of difficulties, it is not an easy road, but Allah (swt) will reward more and more.

The Prophet (s) said:

لا راحة في الدين

Laa raahata fi ’d-deen.

There is no rest in religion.

“There is no relaxation in religion,” now we are praying Fajr and most of the people, not only here, but everywhere in masaajid, are sleeping because they get tired. What do you think when you go deep into an ocean of knowledge, how difficult it is to bring out the pearls and gems, the jewels in that ocean? The ocean of the Prophet (s) never ends!

Muhammad al-Busayri (q) says:

Wa kullun min rasoolillaahi multamisun, gharfan min al-bahri aw rashfan min ad-diyami.

All of them partake from the Prophet of God a handful of his oceans or a sip from his continuous rains.

(Shaykh Muhammad al-Busayri, Burdat ash-Shareef)

The Pharmacy with No Doctor

Everyone is taking from the ocean of the Prophet (s), gharfan min al-bahri aw rashfan min ad-diyami, either in a big quantity from the ocean or in handfuls, it depends on the capacity of the person. As we said before and we cannot summarize every time, but we can follow on the series of Tasawwuf, that there are too many who are like a doctor and a pharmacy: the pharmacy has all kinds of medicine, but what is the benefit if there is no doctor? They cannot prescribe for you the right medicine. The doctor comes and prescribes for you the right medicine that is good for you.

Also, the Prophet (s) said:

العلماء ورثة الانبياء

Al-`ulama warathatu 'l-anbiyaa.

The (genuine) scholars are inheritors of (the knowledge of) the Prophets.

You cannot take knowledge from someone who does not know what to prescribe for you; you cannot take knowledge from someone who does not know anything. The medicines are there, the knowledges are there, but you need a scholar who can give the prescription.

The Best Jihad is to Speak Truth to the Tyrant Sultan

That is why it is said:

فمن جالسهم سرى إليه من حالهم الذي اقتبسوه من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومن نصرهم فقد نصر الدين

Faman jalasahum saraa ilayhi min haalihim alladhee’qtabasoohu min rasoolillahi (s) wa man nasarahum faqad nasar ad-deen.

Anyone who sits with these scholars, immediately what is reflected on them as Inheritors of the Prophet (s) reflects on them.

Their states reflect on them and it reflects on those who sit with them. “Haalahum sara ilayh,” “sara” means like “israa,” to move quickly in space with no time; they are the reflections of the Muhammadan Knowledge that the Prophet (s) inherited to [bequeathed] them.

The Prophet (s) said:

لاَ تَزَالُ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي عَلَى الْحَقِّ ظَاهِرِينَ لاَ يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ يَخْذُلُهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ

There will never cease to be a group from my ummah manifest upon the truth, they will not be harmed by those who forsake them until Allah's Decree comes. (Narrated Thawban, Tirmidhi)

Laa zaalu taaifatan min ummatee `ala al-haqq zhaahireen, “There is always a group of my ummah always standing for haqq, not for baatil.” And as he said in another hadith, if you combine them together, when they asked the Prophet (s) what is the best of jihad:

أفضل الجهاد كلمة عدل عند سلطان جائر

Afdal al-jihad kalimatu `adlin `inda sultaanin jaa'ir (in another version, aw kalimat al-haqq).

The Prophet (s) said, “The best jihad is a word of justice (or a word of truth) before a tyrannical king.”

( Related by Abi Sa`eed al-Khudree)

The best of jihad is kalimati ’l-haqq, a word of justice, of haqq. You differentiate between haqq and baatil `inda sultaanin jaa'ir, in front of a sultan, don't worry that he is sultan or president, you say the truth, this is the best of jihad, not to keep quiet, because if you keep quiet Shaytan will trap your feet. You must stand up and say, “No, that is wrong!” not to go shooting and killing. The best jihad in this time is to stand up and say the truth in front of a tyrant. Don't let your mind go far in thinking who is that sultaanin jaa'ir, who is that tyrant? It is your ego, your self! Everyone has a sultanin jaa'ir inside him, as the Prophet (s) mentioned that there is a place in the heart that Shaytan can enter. Look for your Shaytan in order to correct yourself, look for your Shaytan in order to throw him out.

Knowledge of the Apparent and the Hidden

So the Prophet (s) described them as Laa zaalu taaifatan min ummatee `ala al-haqq zhaahireen, “There is always a group of my ummah always standing for haqq, laa… “There is a group of my ummah who will come in the Last Days who keep standing on haqq, they don't care what will happen, they don't care who humiliates them, they are like pine tree always standing up, always green, standing up, hattaa yaatee amrillah, until Allah's Order comes.” When Allah's Will comes it will appear. “Never will they be...always you can find some of them, never will they be cut, always they are there, but look for them.” We are not speaking about scholars, qaala wa qeel, we are speaking of awliyaullah, those who are carrying `Ilm azh-Zhaahir wa`Ilm ul-Haqaaiq zhaahiru wa’l-baatin, Knowledge of Reality, of Truth, and Knowledge of Shari`ah; what is the secret?

How do they work together, Tasawwuf and Shari`ah? That is what we need to learn that is what we are doing in this series. Of course they have to work together because Jibreel (a) mentioned Islam, Imaan and Ihsaan. If it was enough he would have stopped at the Five Pillars or at Six Pillars of Imaan and he might have even stopped at Ihsaan, moral excellence. But he did not stop there, but he asked about as-Sa`ah, the Hour, he asked Prophet (s) Akhbirnee an as-sa`ah, “Tell me about the Day of Judgment.” He didn't stop at Islam, the Five Pillars, nor at Imaan, the Six Pillars, nor at Moral Excellence, one pillar, but he went to the Day of Judgment, which means the Day of Judgment is the fourth element that we have to look at! Today what are they the `ulama teaching? With all respect and love to them, they teach only what they have to teach, such as how to pray and fast, but they drop from their teaching the State of Moral Excellence, which Allah taught to the Prophet (s), where He said:

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظِي

Wa innaka la-`alaa khuluqin `azheem.

You are of the most exalted character. (Surat al-Qalam, 68:4)

“Verily, you are of a tremendous character, you have the greatest, noble character.” And Sayyidina Jibreel (a) did not stop at Moral Excellence, he continued to ask, “When is the Last Day, yaa Rasoolullah?” He said, “The one asking must know more than the one who is asked.” That means, “You know better, of course no one knows.”

Sayyidina `Umar (r) narrated:

"While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (s), one day a man came up to us whose clothes were extremely white, whose hair was extremely black, upon whom traces of travelling could not be seen, and whom none of us knew, until he sat down close to the Prophet (s), so that he rested his knees upon his knees and placed his two hands upon his thighs and said, 'Muhammad, tell me about Islam.' The Messenger of Allah (s) said, 'Islam is that you witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and you establish the prayer, and you give the Zakat, and you fast Ramadan, and you perform the hajj of the House if you are able to take a way to it.' He said, 'You have told the truth,' and we were amazed at him asking him and (then) telling him that he told the truth. He said, 'Tell me about iman.' He said, 'That you affirm Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and that you affirm the Decree, the good of it and the bad of it.' He said, 'You have told the truth.' He said, 'Tell me about ihsan.' He said, 'That you worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you don't see Him then truly He sees you.' He said, 'Tell me about the Hour.' He said, 'The one asked about it knows no more than the one asking.' He said, 'Then tell me about its tokens.' He said, 'That the female slave should give birth to her mistress, and you see poor, naked, barefoot shepherds of sheep and goats competing in making tall buildings.' He went away, and I remained some time. Then he asked, `Umar, do you know who the questioner was?' I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'He was Jibril who came to you to teach you your deen'." (Muslim, Bukhari)

And then Jibreel (a) asked about its Signs. He didn't stop asking, meaning, “There is a Day coming when we will be judged and I am giving you the Signs for it, for you to pay attention!” Today dunya is only work, work, work, work, money, money, money, money. Today we do lot of work and very little worship and we say that’s it. Why was Prophet (s) standing until his feet were swollen? As Sayyida `Ayesha (r) asked the Prophet (s), “Allah took all your sins,” although he doesn’t have any sins, he is infallible, but it is for us to understand, “why are you still standing and your feet are swollen?” and the Prophet (s) said, “I have to be a thankful servant”:

Allah's Messenger (s) performed salaat until his feet were swollen, so it was said to him, “You burden yourself like this, while your past and future sins have been forgiven?” He said, “Shouldn't I be a thankful servant?'" (Tirmidhi)

We pray, but we are very lazy and we delay and delay and delay to pray Zhuhr nearly to `Asr, then we pray Zhuhr and we delay `Asr until nearly Maghrib time, then we pray `Asr. Maghrib the same `Isha the same, Fajr the same. We are lazy, because there is too much negativity in the world. So Jibreel (a) wants to give us a sign and he asked, “What are its Signs?”

The Prophet (s) said: You will see the barefoot, naked, destitute Bedouin shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings. (Bukhari)

That sign is enough for us to know that we are in the Last Days! “When you will see the barefoot, naked Bedouins competing in building high-rises,” not building high-rises, but “competing”; how did the Prophet (s) know they were going to compete? They are competing now, “I will build 120 storeys,” and the other one wants to build 124; they are like that, increasing by four or five meters as it changes everything.

Find the Perfect Guide

So these awliya:

Alaa inna awliyaaullaahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon.

Behold! Verily on the Friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surah Yunus, 10:62)

You have to find them if you want your religion to be okay, because they reflect what Allah reflected on the Prophet (s) and what the Prophet (s) reflected on the Sahaabah (r) and what was reflected from Sahaabah (r) to the imams of the Four Schools of Thought, from them that sincerity will be reflect on those scholars and they become awliyaullah. They describe `Ilm ul-`Ulama, the Knowledge of Scholars, as like they give you all kinds of medicines and they say, “Pick one that suit you.” How do you pick? They don't know and we don't know, but they give you all the different kinds of medicines, thousands and thousands they say they are there. What to do with them? Give me the one that fits me! So you have to find a complete and perfect shaykh.

Hum al-qawm laa yashqaa bihim jaleesahum, “They are the people whom you like to be with.” When you see them you feel happiness and when you sit with them you feel happiness; they are perfect shaykhs, murshidoon kaamiloon. They have reached a level that Allah made them to see what people cannot see and to hear what people cannot hear. He says, muraafaqathum hiya al-`ilaaju al-`amalee al-fa`aal li-islaah an-nufoos, “To accompany them is the real medicine.” If you accompany them and see what kind of tablets they take, you take like them. You see what kind of knowledge they follow and you follow that and then they polish your behavior. It is not going to happen by reading books. You are psychiatrist, do you tell your patient, I am checking you and go read some books? You don't let them read books or they get more crazy! You give them advice and say, “This is what benefits you,” then that person becomes stable. Allahuma salli `alaa Sayyidina Muhammad (s).

People of the Right and People of the Left

For that reason, the Prophet (s) said:

المؤمن مرآة أخيه

Al-mu’min mi'rraat akheehi.

The believer is the mirror of his brother (or sister).

A believer is the mirror of his brother. You can see yourself in that person, because he became a mirror. So when you look in mirror what do you see? You see yourself. But what do you see, a reflection of what? When you look in the mirror you see something, yourself, but what kind of self? You look in the mirror, but what kind? How many times we said it? You see yourself right as left and left as right, you see the opposite of what you are. Your heart in dunya is where? It is on the left, but iin reality it must be on the right. To bring it back to the right you need some shuyookh who have the experience to guide you through that road, because the People of the Right are the People of Paradise, and the People of the Left are the people of...:

The Companions of the Right Hand, what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?(They will be) among Lote trees without thorns, among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another in shade long-extended by water flowing constantly and fruit in abundance. Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden and on thrones (of dignity), raised high, We have created (their Companions) of special creation and made them virgin, pure (and undefiled), beloved (by nature), equal in age, for the Companions of the Right Hand. A (good) number from those of old and a (good) number from those of later times. The Companions of the Left Hand, what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? (They will be) in the midst of a fierce blast of Fire and in boiling water, and in the shades of black smoke (with) nothing to refresh, nor to please, as before that they wanted to be indulged in wealth (and luxury) and persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! And they used to say, "What! When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again, (we) and our fathers of old?"

(Surat al-Waqi`ah, 56:27-48)

So I will summarize: As-haab...should be “As-haab” because the word in Arabic is one word spelled, “Alif, Saad, Haa, Alif, Baa,” al-Yameen, the People of the Right, are the People of Paradise and Allah is describing what high rewards He will give them and As-haab ash-Shimaal, the People of the Left, are the People of Punishment in Hellfire, and the description of what Allah will give them of pain and poison and pus and all kinds of disgusting issues. So when we look in the mirror we see our heart on the right side, which is what it must be in order to see what cannot be seen and to hear what cannot be heard. So that’s why they say if you look in a mirror...first of all you cannot see yourself. Can you see your face? No, you need a mirror to see your face. You can see your body, but the body runs according to the mind and the heart. The mind you cannot see, your face you cannot see, you cannot see your eyes or your mouth or ears. You might see a bit of your--some people close one eye and then they can see a bit of their nose because it is coming out, but in reality you have to have to have a mirror. But if the mirror is broken you might not see where are the problems in your face. You need a pure, clean, clear, subtle mirror. Where to find it? That is why some people put a magnifier. They check the eyes, the face, the skin, they put a magnifier looking at the skin, especially those who want to be beautiful, they check themselves piece by piece. But you need a real mirror.

Who is the real mirror? It is the Prophet (s)! And the Sahaabah (r) looked at him and they saw themselves. He is the real mirror and there is no game in it. They looked at the Prophet (s) and they began to see they have this defect and this defect, because every day they looked at the Prophet (s) and every day the Prophet (s) reflected through his mirror, his personality, he reflects different defects in you. Never the Prophet (s) says to you, “You are defected,” never! This is adab: never the Prophet (s) said something to make people upset, never he said “laa,” he always makes people happy.

But he shows you in the mirror every day and you see a defect, you fix it, and the next day you see another defect. From one to one, everyone can see themselves in the mirror of Prophet (s) and know his or her defects at the same time. How is that possible? He can be with everyone! Allah gave him that power that when he looks at his Sahaabah (r), all of them are under his sight, under his gaze. Can you look at more than one person in your mirror? The Sahaabah (r), all 124,000 of them are looking at Prophet (s) day and night and Prophet (s) is reflecting on them their bad manners in order that they correct themselves. See the power of Prophet (s)! That is why the Prophet (s) said, “Al-mu’min miraata akheeh, the believer is the mirror of his brother.” You look at him and see yourself, you see your badness in there and try to fix it.

Imam Ghazali’s Conclusion Concerning Tasawwuf

We come back to what Imam al-Ghazali (q) said. They call him Hujjat al-Islam, the Proof of Islam, and Shaykh al-Islam. They used to ban his books in some countries, but now they opened it and they have his books and today they teach his books in masaajid, even in masaajid that their inclination is Wahabi. He said:

Ad-dukhoola ma` as-soofiyya fardu `ayn, To be with Sufi people is an obligation because Tasawwuf will clean you from bad morals and characters.

Why is it an obligation?

Laa akhlu ahadun min aayib, Because no one is free from defects.

All of us have defects. Everyone has defects except the prophets, who have no defects, they are infallible. And he said:

Kuntu fee mabda amree munkirun li ‘s-saaliheen, In my early stages I was denying all these pious people and `ulama, I was not giving them any attention until I found a shaykh, Yoosuf an-Nasaaj (q). He began to polish me through cutting my bad manners and he put me in struggle, bi ‘l-mujaahadah, in struggle against the self, struggling against my ego and desires. Whatever my ego tells me, I do the opposite. If my ego tells me, “Eat this food,” I don't it, I eat another food. And if my ego wants me to buy an expensive watch, I buy the cheaper one. Anything my ego tells me I do the opposite, I am polished like that, he is polishing me until I began to manifest real inspirations and understand them, because I began to be..he took me through polishing me, to the state in the hadith of the Prophet (s), and I began to see what people cannot see.

My servant does not cease to approach Me through voluntary worship until I will love him. When I love him, I will become the ears with which he hears, the eyes with which he sees, the hand with which he acts, and the legs with which he walks (and other versions include, “and the tongue with which he speaks.”). (Hadith Qudsi, Bukhari)

That hadith of the Prophet (s) is a Holy Hadith, a Revelation from Allah directly to the Prophet (s); those are hadith that come directly to the Prophet (s), they are called Hadith Qudsi. No one can deny that hadith! That means there are people who can hear what others cannot hear and see what others cannot see.

At that time, as I was progressing, I saw Allah in my dream telling me speaking... “Allahu Akbar” in a way that we don't understand in the dream...calling me by name and saying, “Leave behind all these things you are after. Leave behind all those people who make you busy for nothing, talking too much.”

Like Sayyidina Bayazid al-Bistami (q), before him. He was asking Allah, “Yaa Rabbee open for me Your Door. Kayf al-wusoolu ilayk? How can we reach You, O our Lord?” Are we asking this question? Now we are saying, “How can we reach a psychiatrist!” and we never say to ourselves how can we reach Allah (swt). Allah said to Bayazid, Itruk nafsaka wa ta`al! “Leave your ego and come! Don't come with your ego, like when Sayyidina Musa (a) asked to see Me, he came with himself.” He didn't come alone, he brought himself with him. Can there be any self standing in the Presence of Allah (swt)? That is why He said to him, “Look at the mountain. You cannot look at Me, don't bother.”

Washab aqwaamun ja`altahum fee ardee mahal nazharee, wa humu ’Lladheena baa`oo ’d-daarayn bi hubbee.

So Allah (swt) said to Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (q):

Da` shawaaghilak, “Leave what makes you busy and be with people who are already under My Gaze. Be friendly with these people. Those are the people who sold Heavens and Earth for My Love. They asked for My Love and to love Me [only].

Allah is saying to him, “To love Me is to sell, to leave behind dunya and Akhirah. “Come for Me alone!” Like Rabi`a al-`Adawiyya (q) said, “Yaa Rabbee! I am not worshipping You to put me in Your Paradise, I don’t mind! And I am not worshipping You to save me from Your Hellfire, I don't mind! But I am worshipping You to attain Your Love. If You put me away from Your Love, then I am in big problem.”

Who is thinking like that today? No one. We will continue about that dream of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (q) next time.

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.

In connection with what we have said, I will mention a very famous hadith of the Prophet (s):

There are seven persons whom Allah will shade on a Day when there is no shade but His: a just ruler; a young person who grew up in the worship of Allah; a person whose heart is attached to the mosques; two persons who love each other, meet and depart from each other for the sake of Allah; a man whom a beautiful woman of high status seduces but he rejects by saying, “I fear Allah”; a person who spends in charity and conceals it such that his right hand does not know what his left hand has given; and, a person who remembered Allah in private and he wept. (Sahih Muslim, Book 5, Number 2248)

Seven types of people, Allah will give them shade from the Sun on the Day when there is no shade to anyone, “To seven types of people I will give shade” from the Sun, because it descends above the heads seventy arms, it will be so near us on the Day of Judgment burning our brains and Allah doesn’t let the brain to die from that burning, making it to feel the heat of the Sun! You know how much is the heat of the core of the Sun? It is 50 million degrees Centigrade; 50 million degrees Centigrade is on your head, so what will happen? You will be burned but you are alive and when your body becomes black and burned into ashes, Allah brings you back! It’s punishment. May Allah put us under that Shade and even forgive us and send us to Paradise with no account, because:

من قال لا اله الا الله دخل الجنة

Man qaala laa ilaaha illa-Llah dakhal al-Jannah.

Whoever says ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Llah’ enters Paradise.

He said, Imaamun `adil, the first that gets the shade is imaamun `adil, a just imaam, one who knows justice, not one who takes the chair with no justice. How many today sit on a chair and they have no justice in their hearts? They manipulate people under table, they say “Give me some money, I will do whatever you want. No problem. I will change the fatwa.” How many times these `ulama have changed their fatwa? Too many times. Imaamun `adil.

Wa shaabun nasha'at fee ta`atillahi ta`ala. We will explain that first one next time. Second, a young boy or girl who was raised on Allah’s worship, worshipping since childhood. We continue tomorrow that hadith and the story. These are drops of what Islam really gives. These are some crumbs to at least give you a taste and for all of us to learn how much Tasawwuf has been mentioned through history, especially in North Africa and Central Asia. North Africa is mainly Tijani and Shadhili and Central Asia is mainly Naqshbandi and Pakistan/India is Nizami, Chisti. Everywhere you can find different taraa'iq.

In America and the West you can find all of them! Subhanallah, Allah’s Greatness! We didn't think about it like that before. In this country you find all of them, because Allah has sent them as ambassadors, carrying the flag of Tasawwuf high, to teach good manners among those who have no manners, to show the greatness and beauty of Islam through these shuyookh who represent their real ones back home. May Allah keep us under their reflection, under their gaze.

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.

Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidina Muhammad (s) hattaa yardaa Sayyidina Muhammad (s). Now what we have to do is go and rest, first pray Ishraaq before you sleep and then go and rest.
