The Reality of Intercession of the Prophet (s)

Mawlid an-Nabi (s) and Urs of Ghawth al-`Azham

Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani with Holy Relics

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

13 February 2015 Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Suhbah at Noor-e-Medina Mosque

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakaatuh. Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een. Ayyuha ‘l-mu’minoon al-haadiroon ittaqu ’Llaha inna ’Llahu ma` alladheena ‘ttaqaw wa ’Lladheena hum muhsinoon.

I would like to thank the chairman, directors and staff of Masjid Noor-e-Medina, al-Madinat al-Munawwarah, Noor an-Nabi (s), everyone is carrying from Noor an-Nabi (s). Alhamdulillah, I heard in Urdu a very nice presentation about Sayyidina `Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani (q) and most of it I did not understand, but I understood enough that we remember him and that he is with us. Awliyaullah are not away, absent, they are with their Lovers. He is with his Lover, with the Prophet (s), and with Allah (swt), and we are with him so the connection is running.

We are very honored to have the blessed hair of Sayyidina `Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani (q) tonight with the blessed hair of the Prophet (s) and with the Na`l Shareef that we see many here [people wearing the symbol of the Prophet’s Holy Sandal on their clothes and caps]. But before we go into that, we are living in rough days and Ahl as-Sunnah wa 'l-Jama`ah are keeping their love to the Prophet (s) and that is what is saving them, because we are moderate people, as Prophet (s) said:

نحن أمة وسطة

We are an Ummah on the middle way (moderate).

Nahnu ummatun wasata, “We are an Ummah that takes middle way,” we are not liberal and we are not extreme. We are as the Prophet (s) taught us, we are trying to follow. He never said in his life “laa”, he never said to anyone “no”, always he listened to the elders, he listened to the child, he listened to the girl, he listened to the boy, he listened to the ladies and he listened to the men, and he never said “no”. Now we live in time that everyone says “no”. They teach you even in universities to criticize the professor in order to benefit more. Prophet (s) said, and I will mention that Hadith, I have more but the time is running short, he mentioned and predicted the Signs of the Last Days.

One of them is on the extinction of `ulama and the withdrawing of knowledge:

The Prophet (s) said, "Knowledge will be taken away (by the death of religious scholars), ignorance (in religion) and afflictions will appear, and Harj will increase." It was asked, "What is Harj, O Allah's Messenger (s)?" He replied by beckoning with his hand, indicating "killing."

(Narrated Abu Hurayrah, Bukhari)

“The disappearance of `ulama and the knowledge will be lifted up and taken,” there will be no knowledge. (Host connects Mawlana’s microphone.) You see, we need to use microphones, but in the time of Sahaabah (r) there were no microphones and everyone could hear the Prophet (s), and now our voices cannot reach except half of this room. Can my voice or the voice of the imam be heard (without a microphone)? In the previous time they could hear the teacher without any microphones. I visited the Naqshbandi shuyukh in Uzbekistan and we passed by the masjid of Sayyidina Imam al-Bukhari (q), who compiled the most authentic Hadith of the Prophet (s). He used to have a madrassah, which is still there with the masjid, and they told me it accommodates 5,000 people and outside the masjid in the courtyard they can fit 25,000 people, and when he gave a lecture on Hadith of the Prophet (s), all the people could hear without microphones. There were no microphones except heavenly microphones, and they reached the last of the 25,000 just as they reached the first one. How did that happen? Allah knows best.

These are Awliyaullah. There is a qawl, some scholars say that either or both Sayyidina `Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani (q) or Sayyidina Muhyiddin ibn `Arabi (q), said:

“My hand that I put under the boat in which Sayyidina Nuh (a) was sailing saved the boat.”

If that hand did not save the boat, the boat would have sunk and there would be no human beings except kuffaar! Later they asked, “What does that mean?” He (or both) said, “It means that our hands carry the blood of the Prophet (s) as we are from his Family (r). We are carrying that Reality, that Noor, that Allah (swt) dressed Sayyidina Muhammad (s) with. That Noor that is in our hands, as we inherited from the Light of the Prophet (s) through his hands and that is what saved Nuh (a) from sinking with his boat.” So don’t underestimate the powers of the Family of the Prophet (s)!

Prophet (s) mentioned Ahl al-Bayt and Ahl al-`Abaa, the Five: Prophet (s), Sayyidatina Fatimat az-Zahra (a), Sayyidina `Ali (a), Sayyidina al-Hasan (a) and Sayyidina al-Husayn (a). There are 19 malak, angels, assigned to Hellfire and there are 19 angels assigned to everyone, the Angels of Punishment. If we look into that we say, “O how can we be saved from Hellfire?” because all of us made sins; no one is perfect except Sayyidina Muhammad (s). And Imam, I would like to ask a question. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Alladhee anqada zhahrak.

Have We not expanded for you your breast? And We removed from you your burden that weighed so heavily on your back. (Surat ash-Sharh, 94:1-3)

How? Wa wad`ana `anka wizrak alladhee anqada zhahrak, “We have taken away your sins, wizrak,” meaning, `amal that is not good. “We have taken that away from you because it overloaded your back with all that bad `amal.” The Prophet (s) is ma`soom, he is infallible, so how Allah said in Holy Qur'an wa wad`ana `anka wizrak, “We have put down your wizr”? Prophet (s) has no wizr: he did not eat from the Forbidden Tree, he did not listen to Iblees, he is pure. How is he having so much load on his shoulders that Allah relieved him by taking away that wizr, burden? It means that the Prophet (s) is not concerned about himself, he is concerned about the Ummah, and therefore, the Prophet (s) is carrying their wizr on his shoulders. And Allah is saying to them: alam nashrah laka sadrak, “Yaa Muhammad! We have opened your chest and We make you happy by taking away the wizr of the Ummah that you are carrying on their behalf , and We are throwing that bad `amal in the Hellfire and leaving them pure, going to Paradise on the Day of Judgment!”

What do you expect from Prophet (s)? We are weak servants so we have to expect something, we have to ask, “Yaa Sayyidee, yaa Rasoolullah, don’t leave us because if we are left we will lose!” There is no `alim that can stand in front of Allah (swt) except through the Prophet (s)!

Above every knower is a (higher) knower. (Surah Yusuf, 12:76)

Above every knower there is a knower, above every `alim there is `alim, so Prophet (s) wants us to be aware of what is coming on the Ummah. He said 1500 years ago according to Ibn Mas`ood (r):

Study the Qur’an and teach it to people, study the obligations and teach them to people, for I am a person who will be taken, and truly knowledge will be taken, and fitna will appear such that two people will disagree on an obligation and will not be able to find anyone to mediate between them. (Tirmidhi)

“Learn the knowledge,” the knowledge of Holy Qur’an and Hadith, wa `allimooha’ n-naas, and teach it to people”, it is a duty. Today someone teaches nonsense and they made him a professor! No, our duty is to teach Islamic knowledge, not to sit on it. No, you have to go and teach it and don’t take money for it. Now they make money from teaching Holy Qur'an and Hadith and that is not acceptable. Wa ta`allamoo l-qur’an wa `allimoohu ‘n-naas, “learn the Holy Qur'an and teach it to people.” If you learn it for yourself that is okay, alhamdulillah, but it is necessary to teach it to someone else. Wa ta`allamu ’l-faraa’ida wa `allimoohaa, “learn the obligations and teach them to others”. Don’t do it by yourself and not teach others, teach them. Fa innee imra’un maqbood, “I am a human being like you, going to die.” “Die” means veiling himself: for us Prophet (s) is fresh and alive in his holy maqaam, because he mentioned in many Hadith:

انا حي طري في قبري

I am alive and fresh in my grave. (Tafsir Imam Suyuti)

Maa min ahadin yusallim `alayya illaa radd-allaha `alayya roohee hatta usallim `alayh.

No one prays on me, except that Allah will send back my soul to me to return his greeting. (Abu Dawud)

“Whoever makes one salawaat on me, Allah sends my soul back to make salawaat on him,” means since people are doing salawaat 24 hours a day, the Prophet’s (s) rooh is inside him.

Inna min asharaat is-sa`at an yurfa`u ’l-`ilm.

And then Prophet (s) said: Knowledge will be lifted up.

wa inna l-`ilma sa yuqbad, “Be careful, knowledge is going to be lifted up.”

In another Hadith the Sahaabah (r) asked, yaa Rasoolallah, hal yurfa` al-qur’an? “Is the Qur'an going to be lifted up?” He said, “No, `ulama will die.”

Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people but rather He takes away knowledge when the scholars die, such that He leaves no scholar behind and the people turn to the ignorant as their leaders. They are asked to give religious judgments without knowledge, thus they are led astray and lead others astray.” (Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr, Muslim and Bukhari)

And when they die there are no substitutes, no more `ulama. Now today you don’t have too many `ulama, whereas before knowledge was Islam, all teaching in schools were for Islam, nothing else, no science, no technology, no headache: you learned Qur’an, you learned Hadith, you are then `alim and you go home and teach.

Wa tazh-har al-fitan, “And fitan will appear, confusions.” Do we see confusions today? Everywhere there is confusion. And look what the Prophet (s) said:

hattaa yakhtalifu ’l-ithnaan fi ‘l-fareeda, “Until it reaches its maximum that two people cannot agree on what kind of fareeda they have to do.” Someone says this and someone says that on what they have to do in prayers, they will argue about whose prayer is correct. Today do they argue or not? They say, “Why do you love Prophet (s)?” Okay, you go love Iblees, no problem, but leave us alone as we love our Prophet (s) and Allah loves him (s)! Allah (swt) gave him a high rank. Allah said:

Alhamdulillahi rabbi ‘l-`aalameen, “Praise be to Me!” He (the imam) said, “Say, ‘SubhaanAllah!’ [Subhaan-Allah!] Say, ‘Alhamdulillah!’” [Alhmadulillah!] When you do something good, say “alhamdulillah” and when something suddenly appears say “subhaanAllah”! Allah is saying “Alhamdulillah” by Himself, praising Himself, because of what? Because of something that has been done. When you say “alhamdulillah” it is for something that is a good event, like this is a good event, alhamdulillah. And you say “alhamdulillah” after the event. And Allah (swt) is saying in the beginning of Holy Qur'an, “Alhamdulillah,” so for everything that was created before the Noor of Prophet (s) appeared, before the Creation was created, He created the Light of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), Allah is praising Himself to Himself that He created, He is saying to Himself, “Alhamdulillah,” that “I created the one that I will dress with My Beautiful Names and Attributes,” and Allah can dress anyone He likes with His Beautiful Names and Attributes!

Allah said (swt) about the Prophet (s):

بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

He is full of compassion and mercy to the Believers. (Surat al-Tawbah, 9:128)

The Beautiful Names of Allah dress Prophet (s). ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem’ is 19 letters. When you say “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem” it’s your key to Paradise, the zabaaniyya of jahannam, the angels of Hellfire, cannot touch you when you say, ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem’. It has 19 letters, as do the names of Ahl al-`Abaa: Muhammad (s), Sayyida Fatimah (a), Sayyidina `Ali (a) Sayyidina al-Hasan (a), Sayyidina al-Husayn (a). Add them together you have 19 letters, that means that Allah dressed them with the secret of ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem’. When anyone mentions ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem’ or mentions one of the Family of Prophet (s) one of these angels will drop down; the 19 angels will disappear from you, they are not allowed to send you to punishment!

Allah praised the Prophet (s) and I would like you to hear this, a little bit from Surat al-Baqara. Allah begins Surat al-Baqara...it took Sayyidina ibn al-`Abbas (r) more than seven years to understand it! All conditions and obligations of Islam and Hudood, Huqooq, and everything is in Surat al-Baqara. And what is the first verse of Surat al-Baqara? “Alif. Lam. Meem.” Look at the tafseer of Awliyaullah! It is not like `ulama tafseer. “Alif. Lam. Meem,” is isharah, a sign, of the whole Creation because Alif is the first letter of “Allah”. And he said, “These three letters point to the entire Existence, everything that exists is in these three letters: Alif is Allah, Lam is Jibreel (a) and Meem is Muhammad (s)! It begins with Allah (swt) revealing to Jibreel (a) and Jibreel (a) revealing to Muhammad (s), so from Alif to Meem is the whole existence. It begins with with Allah and ends with Sayyidina Muhammad (s).

I am not going into detail, but a little bit from this [Mawlana reads notes]: Ishara ilaa dhaat alladhee huwa awwalu ’l-wujood `alaa maa marra, it indicates Who is the beginner of Existence. Allah (swt) created the Lam and created the Meem. Lam is Jibreel (a) to deliver the Message and Sayyidina Muhammad (s) is the final...the Message reached him at the end. That’s why the beginning of the Holy Qur'an is Alif and the beginning of the alphabet is Alif and it ends with Yaa and Yaa is what? Yaseen. It begins with Allah and ends with Yaseen (s). So when it reached the Meem, how many Meems in that Meem? When you say Meem how many times do you mention Meem? Two times, and between them Yaa. So you mention first Meem where it receives from Jibreel (a), Yaseen finalizes it and then sends it to Muhammad (s). So nothing can happen without the Beginner, al-Mabdaa, to the End, al-Muntahaa. It has a beginning and has an end: it begins with Allah's Creation and ends with the Prophet’s (s) Intercession.

O Muslims! Allah (swt) gave us knowledge to disseminate it to people. That is why Ahl as-Sunnah wa 'l-Jama`ah are the ones showing the reality behind the secrets that Allah (swt) has given to Sayyidina Muhammad (s). No one can describe what Allah gave to Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! He said:

Innamaa bu`ithtu li utammimu makaarim al-akhlaaq.

I have been sent to perfect the best of conduct (your behavior and character). (Bazzaar)

“I have been sent to perfect the character of human beings”, because we are wild and the Prophet (s) has been sent to perfect the good manners of human beings. That is the issue of al-bi`that, Innamaa bu`ithtu he (s) is confirming, “I have been sent to complete and perfect you.” That means, if we can say it, that he (s) is liable and responsible, if we can say that, in the Presence of Allah (swt) on the Day of Judgement if any one of us is not completed and perfected, because that is what he said: Innamaa bu`ithtu he is ‘confirming’, bu`ithtu, he has been sent to perfect your manners. So we are weak servants and have bad manners, but the Prophet (s) is working on our hearts! We don’t know on Judgment Day how we will appear! That is why we have to learn from his Sahaabah (r), about whom Prophet (s) said:

أصحابي كالنجوم بأيهم اقتديتم اهتديتم

As-haabee ka 'n-nujoom bi ayyihim aqtadaytum ahtadaytum.

My Companions are like stars (on a dark night); whichever of them you follow, you will be guided.

(`Abd ibn Humayd, ad-Daraqutnee, ibn `Adiyy, ibn `Abd al-Barr,

with unsound chains but the meaning is sound.)

“My As-haab are like stars,” might be galaxies, “you follow anyone you will be guided.” Not like today, you are following and they are not accepting what you are following; making people to fight with each other. We are peaceful people that look how Prophet (s) raised his ummah and it is our duty to fulfill that, to continue that, first to our families and then to our communities. O Muslims! Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur'an, as Mawlana just mentioned:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ الصَّادِقِين

O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are trustworthy (in word and deed).

(Surat at-Tawbah, 9:119)

Allah (swt) said, yaa ayyuha ‘Lladheena aamanoo, “those who believe”, not alladheena aslamoo, “those who are Muslim”, because in another ayah, He says:

قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَكِن قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ

The Arabs declare, “We believe (aamannaa).” Say (to them, O Muhammad), “You do not; rather say, ‘We submit (aslamnaa),’ because belief has not yet found its way into your hearts.” (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:14)

“Don’t say you are mu’min, say you are Muslim until iman enters your heart,” because we are still in the preliminary steps of Islam, but we need to come up, and to come up is to be with the saadiqeen, try to find them, don’t think they are hidden, they are veiling themselves.

I hear many stories from people...in Madinat ul-Munawwarah one was recently in the Muwaajaha, and he said, “Yaa Sayyidee ya Rasoolullah! Show me one your awliya, show me one of you awliya, I am standing in Medina, in your house show me one!” He finished his du`a and left and then went behind to Ahl as-Suffah, People of the Bench, and then one old man coming with cane and looked at him and said, “As-salaam `alaykum,” and he replied, “Wa `alaykum salaam wa rahmatullah wa barakaatuh.” And that man said to him, “Look at me,” and then he said, “As-salaam `alaykum,” and then he left. So he asked me, as that is something strange, he was as if not from this dunya. I said these are the hidden awliya that are scattered everywhere in Madina and in Quds and in Mecca, in many areas. Ask Allah to show you a wali, because if we see a wali then that wali will reflect his Noor on us:

المؤمن مرآة أخيه

Al-mu’min mi'rraat akheehi.

The believer is the mirror of his brother (or sister).

Mu’min is the mirror of his brother, so when you look at a mu’min, that reflection, that light of Noor al-Wilaya will dress you and perfect your character, as if you think you are being observed 24 hours a day, to do the best and to talk the best that you can. Why did we visit Lahyat as-Sa`adat li-n-Nabi (s)? (The Holy Hair of the Prophet [s]) Because anything that belongs to the Prophet (s) is alive, hayy, so his Holy Hair is alive! When you say Shahaadah in front of the Holy Hair it reaches Prophet (s), because Prophet (s) is fresh, alive. One of his hairs is enough to intercede for everyone on the Day of Judgment! Like the two awliya, which one...said, “My hand saved Sayyidina Nuh,” because it has the barakah and the light because they are family of Prophet (s). What about the fresh, Holy Hair of the Prophet (s)? When you say in front of it, “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah,” Allah creates angels that will say “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah,” in front of it until the Day of Resurrection and it will be written for you!

May Allah (swt) bless us this evening with the barakah of these three different ziyara of these three Holy Relics and these two Mawlana's, and those who are here, may Allah bless all of us.

I think the best way is to put the table here Shaykh Anwar can make some salawaat, qasaa’id and we will open them and people can look and go past.

Wa as-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. This is important, to show sincerity and piety to everyone.

Yanqati` `amal ibn ’Adam illa min thalath: sadaqatun jaariya wa `ilmun yantafi`u bih wa waladun saalihun yada`u lah.

Prophet (s) said: The deeds of the Children of Sayyidina Adam are cut except three: a flowing donation in Allah’s Way, and some knowledge that you leave behind (that benefits people) and a child who prays for you.

The `amal of a human being is cut when he dies except from three actions, they will continue going and going and going, and one of them sadaqatun jaariya, sadaqa that will be flowing until the Day of Judgement. Whatever you put, according to how much you donate for sadaqa for the masjid, Allah will keep these angels praising you and it will be written for you until the Day of Judgement. So fundraising is important, because it is qardan hasana, they have to pay for the masjid, and Prophet (s) said, “And that person who leaves behind them a knowledge from which people will benefit.”

We just mentioned that hadith of `ilm, “Learn knowledge and teach it,” so the people who are looking after the masjid, they are teaching and giving what they can, so we have to help and open our hearts like whatever you can give inshaaAllah, I feel shy to say, but put your hands in your pockets and give us your credit cards and the ladies can give all their jewelry (laughter). Don’t run away, we’ll catch you! They have $60,000 to pay...we take pledges, we take credit cards, we take your shoes...you can go home walking on the snow...if we don’t collect $60,000 we can stay here all night, forever! They have place langar food and they have place to sleep. I remember I came here 10 years ago.

DISPLAY OF HOLY RELICS

This is Holy Hair of Prophet (saw). This is his turban, part of it. This is Sayyidina Shaykh `Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani's Holy Hair. This is the sandal of Prophet (s). I feel a real connection from the holy na`l ash-shareef of Prophet (s); it will take us to Jannat al-Firdaus as Prophet (s) used them.

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
