The Four Enemies of Human Beings

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

26 December 2014 Jakarta, Indonesia

Suhbah at Private Residence

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmaani ‘r-Raheem. As-salaatu wa ‘s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi ‘l-mursaleen sayyidina wa nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een.

Every action depends on two issues: either it’s rahmaani or it’s shaytaani. It’s not easy to listen to the rahmaani `amal, but it is easy to listen to the shaytaani `amal, because our ego always tries to take us to the shaytaani `amal. Allah wants from us that every `amal we do must be rahmaani, but because of our ego many of the good `amal that we try to do we leave them and we do the shaytaani `amal, because the four enemies to Insaan, human beings, there are four enemies always shuyukh try to teach their followers to avoid these four enemies. These four enemies are in everyone and the main goal or importance of Tariqah is to eliminate these four enemies, which are like blocks, hlike when you build a wall of cement blocks you cannot break it. These four enemies are like four cement blocks, one behind the other and it’s very difficult to break them.

Awliyaullah Help Their Followers, `Ulama Must Be Role Models

The entire concern of Awliyaullah is for their followers is to eliminate these four enemies and they try their best to help their followers achieve this. The whole Tariqah is built on eliminating the four enemies, because Allah (swt) doesn’t like them; therefore, He sent His Prophet (s) to eliminate these four enemies that grow within us, because they’re like a bush or tree for which you first plant a seed, then you water it and it becomes a tree. When you water these four enemies they live within us and when you don’t water them they die. The water that feeds those bushes to become bigger and bigger is our bad desires that makes them grow within us. These four enemies are nafs, the ego; hawaa, the bad desires; dunya, the worldly life; Shaytan, the evil power that is within us, the devil. As much as we listen to them, that much they make branches within our bodies. So Allah has sent messengers to tell us, “Don’t water your enemies.” As long as we listen to them it’s like watering them and they spread branches of bad `amal within our bodies.

That’s why Allah (swt) sent `ulama, to teach us discipline, and in order for `ulama to teach us they must be role models for us, because if they have no discipline how are we going to learn discipline from them? On the contrary, Awliyaullah have discipline and are the role models who can apply on themselves what they ask people to apply on themselves; in fact, they apply it on themselves first. So a wali tries his best to eliminate the influence of these four enemies within him. That’s why the branches of the four enemies are dry and they die, and when they die that person becomes a Waliullah and they will see what people cannot see and hear what people cannot hear, as Prophet (s) said Allah (swt) told him in a Qudsiyy Hadith:

My servant does not cease to approach Me through voluntary worship until I will love him. When I love him, I will become the ears with which he hears, the eyes with which he sees, the hand with which he acts, and the legs with which he walks (and other versions include, “and the tongue with which he speaks.”). (Hadith Qudsiyy, Bukhari)

All the bad manners that people have come from these four enemies, so the shaykh comes in order to guide you to the right direction, so you will discipline yourself. As much as the shaykh did his best to kill his enemies within himself, that much Allah raises him higher and higher. So Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, always began his naseeha with:

أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ

Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

“Obey Allah, obey the Messenger and obey the authority.” He never said, “Obey Shaytan”, he always said, “Obey Allah, obey Prophet (s), obey those who are on authority.” ‘Obey Allah’ is to be obedient, to fulfill His orders and do your obligations; ‘obey Prophet’ is to listen to Prophet (s) and follow in footsteps, his Sunnah; and ‘obey those in authority’ means those with authority on your spiritual life, your spiritual behavior.

Different Levels of Awliyaullah

So Awliyaullah look at you and try to teach you how to clean yourself. Awliyaullah in the first level are like when you smell the food but don’t eat it, you only smell it and you feel happy. That means they have the power to make the student to smell the good manners, the good behavior. This type Awliyaullah are still trying to raise themselves, but at the beginning they are trying to teach their followers what they have, which is only the level of smelling, no more. These are Awliyaullah who tell you, “Smell and try one spoon to see if it is nice.”

A higher level of Awliya are those who offer you the food on the plate, to eat, to enjoy the good smell, to taste it, and they offer you to digest it. They have reached a power to fix the bad manners in their followers and make them live a happy life with good manners. So may Allah always keep us with these kinds of Awliya so that not only we smell their good manners, but we smell it and we eat from it!

Awliyaullah are happy with what Abu Tufayl is doing with his people and Awliyaullah are happy that anyone who follows them and becomes a wali one day, in order to guide the people towards the love of Sayyidina Muhammad (s). Every follower of Sayyidi Shaykh Muhammad Nazim, may Allah bless his soul, already he has given them throughout his life, all of them around the world, those that met him and those who only met him spiritually, all of them have eaten from that heavenly food that the shaykh offered to them in order to improve their manners and characters.

Awliyaullah Continue to Guide Us Even after They Leave Dunya

Awliyaullah are the beacons for their followers and even if they passed away their power still exists, as Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur’an:

بَلْ أَحْيَاء عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ

Bal ahyaa’un `inda rabbihim yurzaqoon.

No, they live, finding their sustenance provided in the Presence of their Lord. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:169)

“They are alive in the Presence of their Lord provided with all kinds of provisions,” which means heavenly provisions that they give to their followers in dunya. Awliyaullah, as Allah said in Holy Qur’an, are alive in the Divine Presence and Allah is giving them, nurturing them, providing them with the heavenly food of knowledge to improve their characters, to be better.

I’m very happy with Abu Tufayl, since he first came I am very happy with him and Awliyaullah are very happy with him as he is bringing people from nowhere and making them good in discipline and to carry good manners. It is very difficult to bring a group of people to have that kind of respect and discipline. We ask Allah (swt) to grant us the love of our shuyookh, the love of Prophet (s), the love of Allah (swt) in order to obey and listen to Allah’s orders! For that I am very happy and Mawlana is very happy with him, Awliyaullah are happy with him and inshaaAllah we will all be together on the Day of Judgement with Prophet (s), with Awliyullah, with Mawlana Shaykh, with Grandshaykh, and all the Masters of the Golden Chain, and to be together in dunya and Akhirah. For this reason Mawlana is asking me to renew their baya`, all of them. Men move this way, inside, ladies you can raise your hands.
