[Partial commentary from Al-Fat-hu ‘r-Rabbaniyy wa ‘l-Fayd ar-Rahmaaniyy, The Lordly Openings and the Manifestations of Mercy, by Ghawth al-Azam Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (q).]

A'oodhu billahi mina 'sh-Shaytani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.

Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

As-salaam `alaykum wa rahmatullahi ta`ala wa barakaatuh. Alhamdulillah that Allah made us to complete the Holy Month of Ramadan, today is the last day and in a few hours it will be over. I believe people will miss Ramadan, Tarawih and Salaat al-Fajr and staying up until Ishraaq, which are the most important moments and times in our religion. Three times that are important in this religion are between Fajr and Ishraaq, between `Asr and Maghrib and between `Isha and later at night, some say between Maghrib and `Isha.

Ramadan kept all the three times. You come in congregation before Iftaar, which is `Asr time, sitting, reciting and praising, remembering Allah (swt) and praising Prophet (s). So Ramadan kept these three times, from Fajr to Ishraaq for people to wake up for Sahoor, pray Fajr, wait for Ishraaq and then they can sleep or work. The second time is from `Asr to Maghrib, to pray more and do more worship to get the benefit, and that happens mostly in Ramadan, people preparing themselves by taking a shower, reading Qur’an and Dalaa’il al-Khayrat. The third time from Maghrib to `Isha, Allah makes you happy the day is over, you break fast at Maghrib and we keep Maghrib to `Isha to eat, and that is the way of Awliyaullah.

Prophet (s) encouraged mu’mins and people in general to break fast quickly, don't be late. Allah (swt) gave us ways to reach His Rahmah and to be away from His Punishment. Everyone wants Rahmatullah to reach him and Rahmatullah is hanging over your head and in your heart, but we are not aware of it. That’s why Sayyidina Musa (a) went to someone who has hikmah and rahmah. Allah wanted to teach him and He didn't send him to study Shari`ah or Fiqh because he is a prophet and he has his own Shari`ah Allah gave him, the Ten Commandments, but Allah wanted to tell him, "Yaa Musa, there is `ilm you are not aware of and I'm leaving it with one of My servants whom I taught that knowledge.” He taught him `Ilm al-Ladunniyy, knowledge that can move mountains from their places, as He said:

فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا

So they found one of Our Servants on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our Own Presence. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:65)

“We gave him Rahmah,” without which he cannot reach that `Ilm, without Allah’s (swt) Mercy with which He dressed Prophet (s) to be the Messenger of All Nations and Prophets! That rahmah is what Sayyidina Musa (a) was looking for and he found it with Sayyidina Khidr (a), but he was not able to continue with it because it was not written for him, it was written for other later prophets. Allah notified us in Holy Qur’an about what happened to Sayyidina Musa (a) and Khidr (a), or else no one would know. Like today people send each other messages to notify each other, here we are being notified, “If you want My Rahmah, that `Ilm al-Ladunnee, that is the person who carries that.”

To carry and open that is in nineteen letters, a verse in Holy Qur’an, that begins every surah, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem opens all doors that are locked in front of Allah’s servants. Whoever wants Allah to save him from the nineteen Angels of Hellfire and any other problem, and to open for him from that rahmah must recite “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”. Bismillah saves us from punishment and from the two angels, Sayyidina Ridwaan (a) and Sayyidina Maalik (a), and it gives us the way to reach the Divine Presence.

Fa’l yaqraa bismillah rahmaan ir-raheem li yaj`al Allahu ta`alaa bi bi kulli harfin minhu jannat.

“If you recite “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”, Allah will open from every letter [of it] a paradise.” (al-Qurtubi’s al-Jaami` li-ahkaam al-Quran)

And that paradise does not look like the other paradises, from every letter will come a new paradise! If you recite it another time, another nineteen paradises open, and so forth, it never ends! Allah will open for you and take your problems away.

Also, whoever recites Surat al-Qadr, especially for ladies who are not able to give birth or have a difficult delivery, if they recite it 100 times Allah will make it easy for them to give birth as it is mentioned in Nuzhat al-Majaalis. So Allah (swt) will give us a paradise in every letter of Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem and every time you read it, even once, He will open a new paradise for you every day, different each time.

Why I'm mentioning these ahadeeth? To remind us how much Bismillah is important. Prophet (s) said, “Who does not say ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem’ before any `amal--eating, drinking, writing, anything that he wants to do--fa`amaluhu aqta, his success will be cut,” because everything has to begin with Bismillah and Allah mentioned that in Surat al-Alaq:

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

Read in the Name of your Lord, Who created. (Surat al-Alaq, 96:1)

`Ismu ‘l-Llaah Huwa ‘l-ladhee khalaq al-ash-yaa kullaha, His Name is “Allah”, He is The One Who created all things. From Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem Allah opened all doors for humanity and created universes, humans, jinn and angels.

If you have a child, Allah is saying get as much as you can from children, even if you have one child, try to send him to school to learn and find a teacher to teach him Qur’an. Now today, alhamdulillah, most Muslims send their children to learn Qu’ran; what I see here in America, I don’t see in the Middle East countries, here most people send their children to learn Qur’an.

Sayyidina Ibn `Abbas (r) said the Prophet (s) said:

خير الناس ، وخير من يمشي على وجه الأرض ، المعلمون لكتاب الله ، فإنهم كلما خلق الدين جددوه ، أعطوهم ولا تشاحوهم ،فإن المعلم إذا قال للصبي قل بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم فقالها كتب الله براءة للصبي ، وبراءة للمعلم ، وبراءة لأبويه من النار

The way of people, and the best of people the walk on the face of the earth are the teachers of God’s Book, for as much as the religion is formed they renew it. Give to them and do not hold back, for if the teacher says to the child, ‘Say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmaani ‘r-Raheem’ and he says it, then Allah grants the child freedom from the fire, the teacher freedom from the fire, and the parents freedom from the fire. (Ibn Mardawayh)

To say it one time in life, Allah will give that mother or father who sent that child at least to learn to say “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.” So say now, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem!” Allah gives that teacher, that child and their parents innocence from Hellfire: if they have sins, because that child is ma`soom, infallible, until he reaches maturity, when the child says, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”, that mercy will take the parents to Paradise! So it is an easy task to tell our children to say “Bismillah” when leaving or entering the house. To take away Shaytan and sihr from your home, say “Bismillah” when you put the key in the lock and turn it, then enter with your right foot; at that moment any sihr on you or any evil jinn will disappear completely!

People come and say, “We have sihr on us,” everyone with a problem thinks they have sihr. One time I was with Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) when some people came and said, “Yaa Sayyidee, there is sihr on us.” He raised his cane and said, “If you repeat this another time, I will hit you with this cane! What is my job here? Will a shaykh let his mureed down? Even if you are in the West and I'm in the East I can reach you and destroy the sihr on you!”

Awliyaullah have hidden power and they work on their followers, especially the Naqshbandis. Grandshaykh `AbdAllah, may Allah bless his soul, said, “It’s not allowed for the shuyukh in the Naqshbandi Golden Chain to show our hidden power, so we save our mureed through another way that he will never know, but we did it for him in an indirect way.”

He said more than that: when they were taking Al-Hallaj (q) to the judge to declare he must be killed (because he was believing in Wahdatu ‘l-Wujood, Unity with Allah, which is haraam in Islam, but he was in a trance and said something that is not acceptable, according to Shari`ah he should be hanged), they passed by a shoemaker who looked at him and said, “Yaa imam, where are you going?”

He said, “These people are taking me to the court to judge me because I’m speaking about Wahdatul Wujood.”

The shoemaker said, “I think you deserve to be hanged, because you said something against Shari`ah and you made fitna because these people don’t understand.”

Anyone who speaks about ghaybiyaat, the Unseen Knowledge, what happened to Sayyidina Musa (a) will happen to him: he met Khidr (a) and left. If you make fitna, you don’t need to do that.

He said, “Pray for me.”

The shoemaker said, “I'm not praying for you.”

So Al-Hallaj (q) went to the court and that shoemaker immediately made fresh wudu and prayed two raka`ats; he was one of the Naqshbandi shaykhs. He prayed, “Yaa Rabbee save him, they are killing him and he is innocent!” They made a lot of fitna against him (although we don’t accept Wahdatu ‘l-Wujood). With his du`a, Al-Hallaj (q) was pardoned for 37 years, until he said it again! He was saved from death because the shoemaker’s du`a. You pass by many shoemakers in the Middle East, maybe he is a wali! He worked and ate from his sweat [labor] and his heart was with Allah (swt), although people see him as just a common shoemaker.

Grandshaykh `AbdAllah (q) also mentioned one of the Aqtaab in his country, Daghestan, someone who blew on the trumpet in the morning to wake up all the soldiers and then he blew at Maghrib time for everyone to rest. Grandshaykh (q) said only Sayyidina Abu Ahmad as-Sughuri (q) knew in his time that he was a Qutb in the Naqshbandi Tariqah. So if you want the hidden knowledge say, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.” They said it because:

كل أمر ذي بال لا يبدأ فيه ببسم الله الرحمن الرحيم فهو أقطع أو(فهو ابتر)

The Prophet (s) said, “Any action which does not begin with ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem’ is cut off; it has no continuity.” (Ahmad, al-Musnad)

“Every `amal that does not begin with Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem is a cut `amal,” it is not going to flourish. I am not speaking to other than to you, we are speaking to those in the Naqshbandi Way, and even from other shuyookh in other branches of the Naqshbandi Way need that knowledge. Prophet (s) gave it to everyone: say Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem and Allah (swt) will make you like them:

من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم

Man tashabbaha bi-qawmin fa huwa minhum.

Who imitates a group of people are from them. (Abu Dawood)

So the teacher, the child and his parents will be saved. The child will be saved more than anyone else: he is rewarded and his rewards written for him and his parents, and on top of that his parents will become innocent from Hellfire, in addition to whatever benefit they derive from whatever that child has been dressed with as an infallible one with no sins, like age 5-10 years, and the child is saying “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”. The child will be highly rewarded, that can pull his parents and whoever taught him out of Hellfire. Solely because of his innocence, he makes them enter Paradise and whatever Allah dressed him with He will also dress his family!

Look how much Allah is Rahman and Raheem, He is Compassionate and Merciful and He wants to save the whole Ummah of Prophet (s)!

Whoever recites “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”, for every letter 40,000 rewards will be written for him and 40,000 sins will be removed from him and he will be raised 40,000 levels. (Daylami)

Ibn `Abbas (r) said that the Prophet (s) said, “Whoever reads ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”, the angels can hear every letter you recite even if they are in the West and you are in the East, even if they are in Paradise they can hear it, and they will say ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem’ on your behalf and the rewards will be written for you until the Day of Judgement.” This is from the Mercy of Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem!

If you say “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem” Allah will reward you 4,000 hasanaah, so from nineteen letters, let’s say twenty to make the calculation easier: 20 x 4,000 = 80,000. Allah will give you nearly 80,000 hasanaat for every letter of Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem that you recite! Wa muhiya `anhu arba`a alf sayyi`aat. And Allah from every letter He will erase 4,000 sayyi`aat. So are you making 4,000 sins a day?! Hopefully not. How many breaths do you breathe every minute? Every breath in and out is around 18,000 for the whole day. So on every breath in and out will be written for you and take from you sayyi`aat, for that one who recites Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem. Allah (Swt) will also dress you with all these hasanaat and not only that He will change your sayyi`aat to hasanaat, not just erasing them and every hasnat by ten...count now...how many you have if you recite Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem a hundred times...you are ending with millions. This calculation no one can do it. It is so much that you cannot count.

When you do something good, hasanaah, it will be written for you immediately, but if you do something wrong, then Allah will give you 24 hours to repent before it is written. Also, if you repent Allah (swt) will change it to ten hasanaat up to 700, even from the sayyi`aat, by asking Allah (swt) for His forgiveness. That’s why you keep asking Allah and reciting that verse:

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah. for Allah forgives all sins, for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat Az-Zumar, 39:53)

Who reads that verse before he sleeps and when he wakes up, for 24 hours everything will be turned into hasanaat for them in big quantities. From every letter, you will receive 4,000 hasanaat on what you have done during the day. If you missed your awraad that your shaykh ordered you to do, if you read “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem” 100 times it will cover that, but don’t make a habit of missing your awraad as it is still your responsibility. Even if you intentionally miss your awraad now that you know this practice can cover it, still Allah will forgive because you said His Name. Any way you think of it, left or right, you will have hasanaat and forgiveness that turns into hasanaat when you repent!

It is said by an-Nasafi, one of the great scholars, that when Prophet (s) was in Mir`aaj, he saw a dome created from a white pearl. Today they sell you a small pearl for how much? $100? If it’s real, not planted artificially, it’s really expensive, not even $10,000 if you can find it, and if you find black ones $20,000, if it is not planted and raised artificially in the ocean. So he saw a dome from a whole pearl, not pieces of pearl, that can contain Heavens and Earth, so big that everything in this universe can go inside it! When he saw that, he said, “SubhaanAllah!” It had one door of pure, very solid gold, not that we know here, 24 Carat, but perhaps 2,400 Carats that you can never imagine on Earth, with a gold key and lock. If all human beings from Adam until the Day of Judgement and all jinn, which are more than human beings because they are transparent, we cannot see them although they can see each other, the whole Creation could on top of that massive dome like a small bird! Prophet (s) described the dome: idhaa kaana ka-tayrin `alaa raasi jabal, “like a small bird on top of a mountain.”

As soon as he saw the dome was locked he took a step back, because he didn’t have the key. At that moment he heard: “Yaa Muhammad! Why didn’t you enter? I made it for you. What stopped you?”

He said, “Yaa Rabbee! It is locked.”

The Voice said, “But you have the key that I gave you, Yaa Muhammad! It is ‘Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem’.” Say, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem!” [Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem!]

Then Prophet (s) said, “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem,” and the dome opened! There he saw maa laa `aynun ra`at wa laa udhunun sami`at wa laa khatara `ala qalbi bashar, “What no eye can see or imagine and no ear can hear.” It was beyond anything Prophet (s) could describe, then what about us? We are miserable, we are nothing! Fa infatahat and it opened by saying “Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem”.

Allah gave everyone a dome, your head. Allah can make people with no heads by Kun fa-yakoon. When Prophet (s) mentioned the hadith of the Last Days that Allah will make people walk on their heads in the Day of Judgement, Sayyida `Ayesha (r) was surprised and asked, “How can people walk on their heads?” He said, “The One that made people walk on their feet has power to make them walk on their heads.”

It was asked of the Prophet (s),“O Messenger of Allah! Allah (swt) has said in Holy Qur'an that on the Day of Judgment, some people will be resurrected on their faces. How are they going to walk on their faces?” Prophet (s) said, “The One Who made them walk on their feet will be able to make them walk on their faces!”

Everyone has a dome and either you use it correctly or wrongly. Now men and women are not happy with the dome Allah gave them and make surgery to change it, which is haraam and not acceptable. Doctors inject them with every kind of poison and say it’s okay, when in reality everyone is the same without their head as it makes everyone different.

In that heavenly dome, Prophet (s) saw four rivers min maa’in gayri aasin, from water that is not stagnant, ay mutaghayyar, it has not changed, it that can sit and tastes better than honey and milk. From the three Meems of Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem there was a river coming out. The first river is from water with no changes and maybe that is the river of al-Kawthar:

إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ

Verily, We have given you the Fount of Abundance. (Surat al-Kawthar, 108:1)

“We have given you a lot,” and another interpretation is, “We have given you a river in Paradise called `nahr i-Kawthar’.” This is from the first Meem, yet, in reality, every Meem has two Meems: one Meem facing Akhirah and the other Meem facing dunya and between them is the letter “Yaa”; I explained this before. Wa nahrun min labanin wa yakhruju minha al-Jalaal, “And another river that comes from the Name ‘Allah’, Ismu ‘Llah al-Jalaala, from the Haa, the Hidden, the Unknown, no one can know or comprehend Him, it’s impossible, only in Paradise can Allah be seen. Imam Nawawi (r) said in his Tafseer of the Hadith of the Mi`raaj that Prophet (s) saw Allah (swt) with the eyes of his head.

Abu Dharr reported, “I asked the Prophet (s), ‘Did you see your Lord?’ and the Prophet (s) said, ‘Noor [light]! How did I see Him?’” (Muslim)

Ibn `Abbas was asked, “Did the Prophet (s) see his Lord on the Night of the ‘Israa and Mi`raaj?” and he said, “Yes.” (Muslim)

Regarding these two narrations, in Imam Nawawi’s commentary in Muslim, he says:

فالحاصل أن الراجح عند أكثر العلماء أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رأى ربه بعيني رأسه ليلة الإسراء؛ لحديث ابن عباس

To conclude, the preferred opinion among the scholars is that the Messenger of God (s) saw his Lord with his eyes on the Night of the ‘Israa and Mi`raaj, and this is because of the Hadith of Ibn Abbas.

Prophet (s) is the only one who saw Allah, Who dressed him from one Paradise to another Paradise, taking him through different manifestations of Heavens to prepare him to reach Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa, where Allah asked him, “Who am I and who are you?” and Prophet (s) replied, “You are Al-Qahhaar, yaa Rabbee.” So the second river is of milk from the letter Haa. Wa nahrun min khamratin ladhdhatin li ‘sh-shaaribeen, and the third river is from wine, from grapes that made a heavenly drink that will give a very pleasant taste for the one who can drink from it. The fourth river is yakhruj min meemi Rahman, a river of honey that comes from the Meem of Ismullah ar-Rahman. Fa qaal Allah ta`aal yaa Muhammad! Man dhakara bi hadhi'h il-Asmaa min ummatika saqaytahum min haadhihi ‘l-anhaari ‘l-arba`a, “Whoever mentioned Me with these Names of Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem, I will allow him to drink from these four rivers.”

When someone has an interview and asks you, “Pray for me,” and you pray for him and he succeeds in the interview, he will be so happy that he will share the news with everyone and he will thank Allah. Now we are sitting together here mentioning the Ahadeeth of Prophet (s) and it will make us very happy, so they will not deprive us and that happiness will be continuous day by day until the Day of Judgement! Allah is sending Tajalli on us here right now, because this is Rawdatun min Riyaadh al-Jannah:

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا مررتم برياض الجنة فارتع. قالو وما رياض الجنة؟ قال "حلق الذكر"

Ibn `Umar reported that the Prophet (s) said: "When you pass by the Gardens of Paradise, avail yourselves of them." The Companions asked: "What are the Gardens of Paradise, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "The circles of dhikr.” (Tirmidhi)

“As you pass by the Gardens of Heavens, sit!” as Allah (swt) will turn it into a Garden of Paradise, and the Sahaabah (r) said, “What is that, yaa Rasoolullah?” He said, “Hilaq adh-dhikr,” so sitting like this in a circle is better when there is enough space. Allah (swt) will make this dhikrullah so big and He will reward you as angels are making tasbeeh that is written for you continuously until the Day of Judgement. Even if you only sit one time, still you get that reward; if you sit another time it will be another different reward from Gardens of Paradise.

So now we mentioned those rivers and that dome and we are asking, “Yaa Rabbee, for the sake of Your Prophet (s) make it easy for us to always drink from these rivers!” When Allah gives He gives, He doesn’t take it back, and He gave it to Prophet (s), so, “Yaa Rabbee, we are asking from Your Generosity to open for us these four rivers and make us taste them! For sure, there is no such taste in dunya. It is the taste of Paradise!”

May Allah keep us together in dunya and Akhirah with Prophet (s), Grandshaykh `AbdAllah (q) and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q).

It is said in a Holy Hadith that Allah (swt) said to Prophet (s):

إِذَا كَانَ الْغَالِبُ عَلَى عَبْدِي الاشْتِغَالُ بِي جَعَلْتُ نَعِيمَهُ وَلَذَّتَهُ فِي ذِكْرَى

If My servant is preoccupied with concern for Me, I will make his pleasure and entertainment in My remembrance. (Hadith Qudsi in Hilyat al-Awliya by Abu Na`eem al-Isfahani)

Qaal haakiyan `an Rabbih, he is receiving from Allah (swt) and explaining, idhaa kaan al-ghaalibu `ala `abdee al-ishtighaal bee, Allah said, “If My servant is busy remembering Me, ja`altu hammahu wa ladhdhatahu, I will make his pleasure and entertainment fee dhikree, to remember Me. I will make him so in love with remembering Me and to love Me and I will love him and will take all veils between Me and him!” May Allah take all veils between us and Prophet (s) and the Divine Presence! For Allah, everything is kun fa-yakoon, so, “Yaa Rabbee, we are asking for You to teach us from Heavenly Knowledge by kun fa-yakoon, for us not to lose our minds, our memories and our repentance!”

May Allah keep us always in the Right Way and direction.

Wa min Allahi ‘t-tawfeeq bi hurmati ‘l-Fatihah.
