Revealing One Secret

Ramadan Series 2017, Vol 15

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

13 June 2017 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

Zhuhr Suhbah

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta'ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.

Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma`een.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Usus al-mahabba wa at-tawad`a, the foundation of Mahabbatullah, Mahabbat al-Habeeb, Mahabbat al-Mashaykh, is love, without which your faith can slowly fade. That is why Sayyidina Shah Naqshband (q) said twelve-thousand times in his lifetime:

طريقتنا الصحبة والخير في الجمعية

Our way is companionship (to be together in association) and the best is in the gathering.

Our Tariqah, our way, is association (gathering), and the best is in a group, to be together in the company of those who are with Allah (swt), Prophet (s) and the mashayikh, as that establishes the relationship between you and the shaykh. Our Tariqah is to be together because while it is easy for Shaytan to approach someone who is alone, it is very difficult to for him to penetrate a group. So we must be very careful in order to attract Allah’s, Prophet's, and Awliyaullah’s love.

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said it is impossible for something to grow in a drought as the soil is too dry and wounded, like when you are in a desert or you cut wood, your hands become blistered. Similarly, too much exposure to dunya causes many wounds that bleed and hurt. To avoid that, you must grow a plant and water it, as that will prevent wounds from forming. Just as the doctor would prescribe you medication to heal the wounds on your hands and they would be rejuvenated, we need that medication. Allah (swt) said:

Say, "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, for Allah forgives all sins for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat az-Zumar, 39:53)

Don't despair of Allah’s mercy as He will forgive all sins! He did not overlook any sin, He will throw them all in the ocean and no sins will remain as if you are newly born. Sayyidina Shah Naqshband (q) wants every association to be a place where you throw out your dirty laundry (sins) and in return get the heavenly smell through dhikrullah. That is why Awliyaullah recommend dhikrullah and awraad every day, as they clean our mistakes. The medication that will heal our wounds is Mahabbatullah, love of Allah (swt), which you must establish in order to pass through the tunnel, where you enter a very majestic place, because love of Allah is is not easy to approach. Allah made us reach Mahabbatullah through the door of Prophet (s). Don't say, “He is human like us,” no! Allah said in Surat al-Kahf:

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَى إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ فَمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاء رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا

وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا

Say, "I am but a man like yourselves, (but) the inspiration has come to me that your Allah is one Allah. Whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness and in the worship of his Lord admit no one as partner. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:110)

That is to show familiarity with Prophet (s), because we all are human and servants of Allah (swt). Out of mahabbah, Allah raised Prophet’s name to be with His Name. So love is very important in our journey to Allah, and that is only accepted through love of Prophet (s), as Allah said in Holy Qur’an:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Say (O Muhammad), "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat Aali-'Imraan, 3:31)

That means if you love Allah you must love Prophet (s), as Allah placed him as our Intercessor. If we have a problem we go to our parents, not to lawyers. Our parent is Prophet (s); through him we will be forgiven and without him we will be judged. If we are judged, we will be sent somewhere very difficult, to Hellfire. So in Tariqah, to establish our way through that tunnel is to have Mahabbatullah, Mahabbat al-Habeeb, Mahabbat al-Mashaykh. That is why people run to mashayikh and become familiar by speaking with them, asking questions, and traveling with them, which takes them to the love of Prophet (s). So the first step is Mahabbat al-Mashaykh, to love the shaykh. When you establish that love, it will take you to Mahabbat an-Nabi (s). Sahaabah (r) were diving in that love and whenever Prophet (s) said something they replied, sami`na wa ata`ana, “We hear and obey.” They listened and moved forward without complaining about anything Prophet (s) asked of them.

Gatherings of dhikrullah such as this one help us establish love of mashayikh, which takes you to the love of Prophet (s). These associations are all over the world; you may go to any of them and follow whoever makes your heart happy. Allah will guide you, don’t think He will not guide you: even if we are on top of a mountain, Allah will send someone to guide us. Grandshaykh `AbdAllah (q) said Awliyaullah must check on their followers, and Allah gave them power to guide their followers. Even if they are in seclusion on top of the mountain, a Wali will surely pass by him once every 24 hours to guide him and make association with him, and make him a role model, because of that sacred claim, “Our way is companionship (to be together in association) and the best is in the gathering.”

Prophet (s) was the best role model in all matters:

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظِي

You are of the most exalted character. (Surat al-Qalam, 68:4)

Allah created his (s) character to be magnificent. No one can reach what Allah gave to Prophet (s). Allah is confirming, “You have the best manners, you are the Perfect One whom I created.” So if we love Prophet (s), we must make sure we are staying on the train tracks to reach him, not falling right or left. The responsibility of the shaykh is to increase your Mahabbat al-Mashaykh, Mahabbat an-Nabi (s) and Mahabbatullah. Anyone who is following this way will easily reach Allah (swt), but you cannot find your tunnel if you want to go directly, you need the shaykh to show you how to climb the stairs one step after another until you can see Prophet (s) in dreams or visions and he guides you to the right way.

Too much involvement in dunya makes our body exceedingly dehydrated, as then it is not being watered from Akhirah. When we don’t make dhikrullah we become dehydrated and are away from the eyes of the shaykh, then we begin to face problems, so how can we go through that tunnel to reach Allah (swt) and Prophet (s)? Shah Naqshband (q) wants to open that way to everyone around the globe.

Prophet (s) said:

There is no difference between Arab and non-Arab except through righteousness.

In Allah’s view, there is no difference between an Arab and non-Arab, or a Believer and non-believer, except through righteousness. They are all His servants and He will give them all the same, but you have to make sure the train takes you to the Presence of Prophet (s). That train is Qul in kuntum tuhibboona 'Llaaha fattabi`oonee yuhbibkumullaah: “Say (O Muhammad), ‘If you (really) love Allah, then follow me! Allah will love you and forgive your sins, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’” (3:31) Follow the footsteps of Prophet (s), then you will find Allah (swt) waiting to dress you from His Rahmah.

So the first step is to establish the love of the shaykh, then the love of Prophet (s), which in turn takes you to the love of Allah. Sayyidina Shah Naqshband (q) wants his followers to remind themselves of this every moment, so he began twelve-thousand suhbahs by saying “Our way is companionship and the best is in the gathering (to be together in association).” That is what we can achieve from Mahabbatullah, Mahabbat al-Habeeb, Mahabbat al-Mashaykh: if you love Allah, your Prophet (s), your shaykh, your people, and your community, Allah will open to you what an eye did not see and an ear did not hear.

No eye has seen and no ear heard and never imagined (by mind), nor has it occurred to the human heart. (Bukhari)

Allah will give all that to you, but as we have mentioned before, be like a candle that ignites in the dark night: although its light is small, it is extremely valuable because you are in darkness and it gives you happiness to see what is all around it. So be a candle with a flame: as it burns, it gives light to others. Be a candle, burning in order to help someone else live. The shaykh is like a candle whose flame enlightens your way to reach that tunnel to Prophet (s)!

Tariqah is tahamal al-`adaad, to carry what the ego doesn't like, to burn like a candle. It will burn you as soon as you touch it and you will cry, but in reality, its flame lights the way and shows you where to put your feet. It will bring you great joy in knowing you have saved yourself and others with the love of Allah (swt) and Prophet (s). You can find your way through darkness with a burning candle. It means the shaykh is like a candle: you can see your way through his flame and he will enlighten you and enable you to reach that tunnel to Prophet (s)!

Sayyidina Shah Naqshband (q) told his followers the best thing is to be in companionship, which is our way. That is why Allah instructed us in Holy Qur’an to follow Sayyidina Muhammad (s) in everything as much as we can, and Jannah will be ours. Laa taqnatoo min rahmatillaah, “Don’t lose hope from Allah’s Mercy,” He will guide you for sure.

Say, "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the mercy of Allah, for Allah forgives all sins as He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surat az-Zumar, 39:53)

Here “jamee`ah” means there is nothing left. A TV remote features the option “Select All” and to select all we need the code, which is muhabbat of Sayyidina Muhammad (s)! Sayyidina Yaqoob (a) suffered when Sayyidina Yusuf (a) was taken away by his brothers and he didn’t see him as Yusuf was in prison for many years, you know the story. Allah reminded Sayyidina Yaqoob, “The only acceptable love is for Me! You cannot have love for two in your heart, it must be for Me alone, I you want to go My way you are not on right track.”

Laa yoojid ithnayniyya fi ‘l-islam, there is no duality in Islam, there is only one. You have your shaykh, whose way you follow. Someone else follows his shaykh on a different way; all shaykhs have their way, just as every river takes you to the ocean. Sometimes the rivers and springs take more time to reach, and sometimes they reach quickly. When you try to reach the ocean it will open for you, and then everything is opened by ittiba`, fatabi`oonee, obedience and following the footsteps of the Prophet (s). Love of Prophet (s) is only established through imaan, which you must feel within you. Faith includes husn adh-dhann, to think well of others: laa yakun `indak soow adh-dhann, don't have bad thoughts about someone, always have good thoughts. Meditate on that (seek it) and Allah will save you. In order to establish His servant's love of Prophet (s), Allah (swt) recommended everyone follow him. It is enough for us to know Allah opened His door for us through Prophet (s), who is a human being, to whom you can relate. That is why the Sahaabah (r) were able to relate to and consulted Prophet (s):

وَأَمْرُهُمْ شُورَى بَيْنَهُمْ

Take advice on matters. (Surat ash-Shura, 42:38)

It is necessary to keep this in mind: you must follow the right way, which is often difficult to find. If someone tells you to reach the ceiling but doesn't give you ladder, it is too difficult and you cannot. Alhamdulillah, Allah gave us Muslims a ladder but said, “Come to Me, but not alone.Come to My Divine Presence with Sayyidina Muhammad (s), as he will intercede for you.”

That love for Prophet (s) must be very strong, and the shaykh’s duty is to increase it in your heart; otherwise, he is not really a shaykh. Allah raised His Beloved One, Sayyidina Muhammad (s), and increased love for him by raising Prophet’s name with His Name, “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah,” and through our salawaat. No one else’s name was raised like Prophet’s name, which indicates he (s) is our door through Muhabbat al-Mashaykh. You reach that maqaam when shaykh says something and you have no objection because you understand he might be seeing something different. Allah gave His servant, man or woman, the intelligence to know that.

The shaykh can be a khalifah, an `alim, lawyer, doctor and, therefore, he uses examples from his area of expertise to increase love for Prophet (s) among his followers. I often see secular scientists and today’s `ulama shed light on miracles of Holy Qur’an and meanings of some verses are now discovering through new technology what they did not see before. Now they see what you are made of in your DNA, whereas before they did not. When a mureed takes bay`a and puts his hand on the shaykh’s hand, from that DNA Awliyaullah have the power to extract knowledge from his unique ID. Alhamdulillah, there are so many Awliya around the world; go with them, be with them and you will reach. Follow whom you like and Allah will take you step by step to what is best for you.

And it is He who sends down rain after [men] have lost all hope and unfolds His grace [therein], for He alone is [their] Protector, The One to whom all praise is due. (Surat ash-Shura, 42:28)

When you are fed up you become dry, like hot weather and drought cam, the plants will die without water. The ayah says, “He is The One that will shower you with rain after you lost hope of surviving.” Allah will send rain. During your sulook, journey to Allah, a lot of obstacles will be in front of you, and Allah is saying He will shower you with His Rahmah that will rejuvenate you, like in his old age, Sayyidina Zakariyya (a) was given Sayyidina Yahya (a), from haya, which means “to make it alive.” ‘Yahaya’ one who is living love of Allah and love of Prophet. Allah rejuvenated Zakariyya (a) and his wife Yasara (Sarah), as mentioned in Ruh al-Bayan. He took the first Yaa in “haya”, to live, with Yaa in “Yasara” and he became “Yahya.” This example demonstrates that Allah can completely rejuvenate you within your heart, as Sarah was rejuvenated to give birth to Yahya. so Allah will rejuvenate you, bring you back to life. Now all of us are (spiritually) dead from our bad `amal, and Mahabbat an-Nabi (s) will restore us.

Yes, many speak about loving Prophet (s), but in a way that is not giving his full right. We are worried Allah ordered us to love Prophet and we have no love for him and we are completely unhappy with ourselves and remember how we were brought up before, what we saw, and we faced of obstacles, and we see how the Ummah is in difficulty today, and there are all kinds of miseries around the world.

Prophet (s) said:

The Hour will not arise until the Earth is filled with oppression and injustice and enmity, then from among my progeny one will come out who fills the Earth with fairness and justice, just as it was filled with injustice and enmity. (Al-Hakim in his Mustadrak.)

Now we are under injustice and oppression. May Allah (swt) take that away from us and clear us to make us feel good, to forgive each other, and to learn from these associations that nothing is going to last, that you will die and the Earth will die and nothing will be left.

Allah (swt) asks:

Whose will be the Dominion on that Day? That of Allah, The One, The Irresistible!

(Surat al-Ghaafir, 40:16)

“To whom is the Kingdom today?” Allah answers Himself! He will order Israfeel (a) to blow on the trumpet, and the third time he blows the Earth will be destroyed, and he will blow again and Allah will renew a new Earth, and the Day of Judgement will come. Why did we say that? We turned to Mahdi (a), who will come as our Savior from the hands of Shaytan, so we will be in hand of ar-Rahmaan! May Allah (swt) save us.

We are in a situation in which Shaytan already filled this Earth with injustice and unhappiness, there is no more happiness as before. Every other day we drove three or four hours to visit Grandshaykh `AbdAllah (q) and sat with him from Tahajjud to Ishraaq. When you love, you feel that attraction like a magnet pulling you. How? Because of his actions, his speeches, from spiritual realities he opens for you, some that you can speak about and some you cannot as it is not for everyone to know. Everyone knows about himself and the shaykh will guide him, what kind of tests he will get and be happy with them, even if they are difficult.

One time I was sitting with Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, and he spoke about monks and priests. In Damascus and Aleppo there are a lot of Maronite and Orthodox Christian monasteries, and one huge monastery in Syria has forty high-caliber monks and many priests. He spoke about the forty highest ones, and when he speaks, your whole body and mind doesn’t see anything but him. In his majlis, you don't see who is sitting right or left; wherever you move your head you see Grandshaykh `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani! Now we can see him through our mind and heart. Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidina Muhammad! As-salaatu wa ‘s-salaamu `alayk, yaa Rasoolullah, yaa Rahmatan lil-`Aalameen!

Grandshaykh spoke about how in time of Mahdi (a) the monks will quickly enter Islam without force, with no weapons, but only by love people will gather. He said there is a big monastery in Damascus where forty monks already took Shahaadah but they asked it to be kept secret, and he described them. I think they are Assyrian. Their reputation in Syria is very high, they are good ones. He said, “I want to tell you something: when every prayer comes, they go to their room and I pray with them in jama`ah.” He is in his house, and through the power of Tayy al-Makaan wa ‘z-Zaman, the folding of space and time he prays with them. This is the first time I am mentioning this story. Awliya have that power, distance is nothing to them, it doesn't mean anything, fee tarfati `ayn, lamha, in the blink of an eye they will be there. So he said, “We pray the five prayers in jama`ah.”

In my heart I said, “May Allah make me see them one day.” In dunya these are treasures, forty monks who are Muslim but who did not declare their Islam because the situation is not acceptable. In my heart I was yearning to see one of them. Grandshaykh gave that three-hour suhbah then left. Whenever we arrived after midnight, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) had instructed us, “Knock on my door first,” then we went together to Grandshaykh. We drove three to four hours to pray Tahajjud, pray Ishraaq and drove back to Beirut.

The next day after Ishraaq, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim said, “ I want to go shopping. Come and help me.”

I said, “Okay,” and we went.

Sihhat al-Marja is a huge courtyard, the main center of the city, and from it many different roads branch off. One of them is the road that takes you to Souq al-Hamidiyya, a huge market at the end of al-Amawi Mosque where Sayyidina `Isa (a) will descend on the white minaret.

“How will you be when the son of Mary descends upon you and your imam is one of yourselves?”

How is your situation, when Sayyidina `Isa (a) descends and your imam, Sayyidina Mahdi, is with you? Shaykh Nazim took me, we reached Marja, the courtyard of the inner city where many old homes of Ahlul Bayt, Azwaaj an-Nabi are located, the maqaam of Sayyidina Bilal (r) and many Sahaabah (r) are there. He said, “Let's go to the market place.” We went walking through Souq al-Hamidiyya and I saw from the opposite side from far away someone wearing black clothes was approaching. Some of the monks wore something similar to a turban, but we were going in the opposite way reaching him. Then after twenty minutes of walking in the market where no cars are allowed, suddenly I saw that man took a side road, and I didn't see him anymore, he was inside. When we reached that alley where he had disappeared, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) said, “Come.” There was a big fabric store at the end, and as soon as he turned in we didn't see that man dressed in black, he had disappeared. It was a dead-end street, so I thought he must be he is in that store.

Mawlana said, “Come with me and don't think so much.” We entered that store and the monk was there. He stood for Mawlana Shaykh (q), who said to me, “This is one of the forty.”

He sat with us and spoke with Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, may Allah bless him, and he sent salaams to Grandshaykh and said, “Yes, I am one of the forty monks in that monastery who accepted Islam and our shaykh is `AbdAllah ad-Daghestani.” That was muhayyar al-`uqool, mind boggling! Forty monks in Syria became Muslim and Grandshaykh (q) mentioned them, and I wanted to see one of them, then the next day we went and although I did not tell him about my yearning, one came and showed himself! He renewed his bay`a with Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) and said, “I am going now. Give my salaams to Grandshaykh,” and he left.

What you can say about that? When Grandshaykh (q) gave a suhbah, if we reveal what he said many people will have questions, not because they are not Muslim, but because they are not high on that line of Islam, Maqaam al-Ihsaan, they don't know that Islam is not dry. Now it is becoming dry and needs to be watered by dhikrullah. How are you going to understand these monks sitting in a monastery, they took Shahaadah and do the daily awraad Grandshaykh gave them, and they pray in jama`ah! I was 22 years old. When Grandshaykh and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) speak, they increase love of Prophet (s) in your heart! Today after much struggle, now in America and in Europe alhamdulillah, finally they have opened qasidah recitals (permitted now), but still with no real taste, like when Imam Muhammad al-Busayri (q) says:

Huwa al-Habeebu al-ladhee turjaa shafa`atuhu, li kulli hawlin min al-ahwaali muqtahimi.

He is the Beloved , Whose Intercession is dearly sought against every terror's onslaught.

(Shaykh Muhammad al-Busayri, Burdat ash-Shareef)

‘Huwa al-Habeeb’ means the Beloved of Allah (swt). Muhammad al-Busayri (q) saw that and tasted that! Prophet (s) opened Qasidat al-Burdah to his heart: every word has its own meaning and secret, and every letter is designed to compliment the other letters and form a unique word, like on a flute every hole gives a different sound. When a Wali reads Qaseedat al-Burdah, he receives secrets from it and sees it, tastes it, and memorizes it. Without any effort, it pours into his heart, like Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah (r) said:

حفظت من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعاءين فأما أحدهما فبثثته وأما الآخر فلو بثثته قطع هذا البلعوم

I memorized two knowledges from the Messenger of Allah: one of them I shared with everyone and the other I was not able to share as they would have cut my neck. (Bukhari)

“I learned two knowledges from the Prophet (s).” It comes to the heart directly, without studying, and it leads to the bottomless Ocean! Li kulli hawlin min al-ahwaali muqtahimi, when you recite that verse of the Burdah with the word “calamity,” you will see that calamity and are able to prevent it, or you see happiness and push it up. You see what people cannot see and hear what people cannot hear, not just once or twice, but continuously, non-stop. May Allah dip us in that Bahr al-Qudrah, that power, to always be with our shuyookh here and Hereafter!

This story of Grandshaykh, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) and the monks is mind boggling. How was this arranged? Grandshaykh (q) was in his house and Mawlana Shaykh (q) was in his house, and no one physically saw each other, and my heart was yearning, then the next day Mawlana Shaykh called me, “Come, I need to go to the market,” and we went and I saw one of them. Who arranged it? That is why Islam is great! None of us understand Islam even one percent! Grandshaykh said if all `ulama’s knowledge is gathered, it would be a drop in the Ocean of Knowledge. Yaa Allah, open Your ocean for us, open Prophet (s) for us, open the Ocean of Muhabatullah, Muhabbat an-Nabi (s), Mahabat al-Mashaykh and Fana Fillah, Fana fi ‘l-Habeeb, Fana fi ‘l-Mashaykh: Hudoorullah, Hudoor al-Habeeb, Hudoor al-Mashaykh.

To enter that journey, first is Mahabat al-Mashaykh, Muhabbat an-Nabi (s), then Muhabatullah. First, you need to establish mahabbat between you and your shaykh, and then between you and Prophet (s), and then Allah. It has to begin on a lower step: establish love of the shaykh, and even if you don't feel it, he is working on you in your heart. Awliya are like heart surgeons operating on their mureeds, giving them anesthesia while they clean sickness and disease from their hearts. First is to establish mahabbat, love, and then you have hudoor, presence, because love you think of the one you love all the time. Then you will have mahabbah of Prophet, then mahabbat Allah. After that you will have hudoor: presence of the shaykh, of Prophet (s), of Allah (swt). Then all the secrets come according to that person’s level. That establishes the maqaam of fana: annihilation in the shaykh, then in Prophet (s) , then in Allah's Divine Presence!

May Allah send us to all these oceans of realities, `Ilm al-Yaqeen, `Ayn al-Yaqeen, and Haqq al-Yaqeen, Ridwaanullah al-Akbar!

[Du`a.] [Mawlana recites the names of Sayyidina Imam Mahdi's khulafah.]
